This is one dumb cat! Sound asleep in the middle of the yard (an area about 2 acres in size). Her name is Merry. Companion to Pippin.
Another of Merry:
And here's Pippin. He loves to "go vertical."
Here's the lady of the house, Gus (short for Agamenticus).
Can't forget the canine part of the household, Shelby (with Pippin):
Finally, here's a couple of my house this winter.

Wow, Bawdy! So, what is the snowy season like? How many months do you have to put up with that?!

This winter was pretty bad. More than 4 feet of snow fell, but that's unusual. For the past number of years, we've only had to be plowed out 3 or 4 times a year. This year I think we got plowed out about a dozen times, if not more.
We still have about 3 feet of snow on the ground, but it's melting. We just have to worry about it melting too fast. There could be MAJOR flooding if that were to occur. _________________ "Truth does not depend on a consensus of opinion." ... Anonymous

| Sure I would! Mind you, I lived in Leadville for ten years. Ten months winter, two months bad skiing. I'm just not a summer person, I guess. |

I spent 42 years of my life 40 mi West of Boston, MA. I remember those years of snow well. I worked night shift back then and I remember the Blizzard of '77, the National Guard came and got the nurses to take us back and forth to work. Sometimes we were stuck at work for 3 days straight. The kids had no school the whole month of February that year. One time that year I went outside to shovel out my car in the apartment complex parking lot where I lived...come to find out...my car was parked NEXT to the one I was shoveling out!!! Great memories, NOT!! I am a confirmed desert rat for the last 20 years and I don't envy your snow at all!! _________________ Bobi

Wow! That's really interesting to hear. We moved to Maine in 1985, and to our house in 1987. That winter was pretty bad, but nothing like now. We've never seen it near this bad before. In fact, for the past several years, the snow has scooted by south of us. Boston has been hit pretty bad, and we've been spared. I guess the chickens came home to roost this year!
Still, I love it here. The spring ("mud" season notwithstanding), summer, and fall make up for the lousy winter!
Here's a picture of my back yard in the summer. We have 45 acres, so this is only a small portion of our land, and not even half of what I mow each week in the summer. It usually takes me 3 1/2 to 4 hours to mow the grass on a riding mower. It's my time of Zen. I love it!

Bawdy, have you ever considered raising some chickens? You have the space to free range them. Of course, you have to train the dog(s), but it can be done. Some friends of mine have a whole bunch of chickens, and they are grazing all over the yard. They have a lot of dogs, but they've trained them to not mess with the chickens, and they also guard the perimeter to keep the coyotes out. The best eggs I've ever seen and eaten have come from their place. I just wish they didn't live as far out as they do. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

Have I ever considered raising chickens? Not a chance! I may live in the country, but I'm a city girl at heart!
If I want farm-fresh eggs, there are plenty of places around where I can BUY them, thank you very much!
