While insulin, and all the other hormones, are going to regulate bodily functions, including the storage and burning of excess body fat, there are underlying reasons for the hormonal hell that will cause one to gain weight and, much more importantly, make one feel like crap. Eating close to the way our ancestors did is a good start to remedy these problems, but, it is only a part of the healing that needs to take place for permanent health changes to occur. Our hormones are never going to get back into balance and create the necessary physiological environment to calm the cravings, quell the anxiety, and foster the truly healthy bodies and minds we desire, unless we address the real causes of our screwed up system. We are much more complex creatures than calories in - calories out, eat your naked meat and control your insulin, eat high animal fat and blunt your hunger, and all the rest of the verbiage. We have to take care of our minds and our souls for our bodies to respond in a positive manner. That component is one that is way too often overlooked in so many health seeking pursuits, and, throwing more scientific methods at the problem is not always going to cut it.

It aint just about the food you eat.

Don't forget to feed your head (and your Heart ).

Just a thought that might help... on our journey across the universe. Cool

Sunny

Well put Dean.

I am beginning to realize how important going out doors everyday is..whether the sun is out or not.  Diet is just part of all this for me as well.

I am working on feeding my heart.  An old flame is coming to visit in 2 weeks, haven't seen him in over 15 years.. I have no expectations..except to have fun and go crabbing on the coast and maybe....well..nevermind.  This should be very interesting.  Don't tell Paleoman...ok?

I agree, Dean.  It's a journey, and I believe it never really ends.  I think we can all find things to improve on within ourselves and new experiences to explore no matter how old we are or how much we've done already.

y0u, I'll take care of Paleoman while you're busy.  He'll never know... LOL

Thanks Karen, what a pal!  Can I have Paleoman back if this doesn't work out so well?

You get a serotonin hit directly off insulin response (Well not directly).

Carbs are the reason for food addition.

Dave, are you saying that carbs are the main (only?) reason we've added in other foods besides raw flesh from herbivores? So, like the small amounts of carbs in eggs and dairy products is why we've added in those types of food? I would guess there are other reasons besides the carb content, but, that sure is an interesting theory. Would you care to elaborate on it a bit?

Well, when carbs are ingested, they trigger the pancreas to release insulin.

It is insulin itself that causes a change in tryptophan levels in the brain.

So the more insulin your produce (Regardless of the reason) the greater the high.

This is why larger-obese people (and therefore people who are more insulin resistant) seem to have a greater addiction to carbohydrate food.

So it also follows that all things that affect an insulin response have a chemical addiction element to it..... even drinking coffee, or diet sodas, or eating large meals.

You thoughts?

Dave, in your previous post you mentioned "food addition", but, here you are mentioning carb addiction.

On the addiction thing, yah, definitely. The addiction behavior is to use the substance (in this case carbs) to change the hormonal situation in the body. Right? But, what I was saying is that this hormonal situation (that drives people to use substances to alter it) is caused by things like stress. Does that make sense? There are other coping mechanisms for dealing with stress than using carbs (or crack or booze or any other drug of choice). That was my main point. Does that make sense? Sleep. Sex. Love. Nature. Exercise. Hypnosis. Therapy. Kool-Aid. All these things can be used as coping mechanisms. Of course, a glass of wine or a donut seem to be what most people grab for, and most people in this society actually encourage that behavior. It's called "comfort food", right? Of course, pull out a crack pipe and they freak. Shock It's all substance use, if you ask me. Wink

Well, Dave, you really don't want to eliminate it entirely, otherwise you'd be dead. Wink

There are ways to help bring down the high levels of stress or anxiety or other emotions that trigger hormonal imbalances, though. Some people meditate or do yoga and that seems to help. Exercise can help. Deep breathing. Fasting. Lots of things. When I quit smoking, the only way I could do it successfully was to incorporate multiple interventions simultaneously, and even then it was a bitch, let me tell ya.

I think carbs may be even harder to fully give up, and it is possible that perhaps doing some carbs will quell massive cravings from coming on, for some people anyway. It's worth an experiment or two, don't ya think? I'm talking just a few things like carrots or berries or whatever. For those who can stay off all these substances, I think it may be the most beneficial to do so, but, for those who constantly struggle, who knows. I don't see a reason to be too dogmatic about ZC, do you?

If only that were an option right now.  My 401k has become a 201k.  Sad

WOW Dean..that is quite an interesting and inspirational documentary!!!

So my business plan for the Boot Babe Bordello will definitely be modeled after that factory....everyone will be paid equally, and the customers will be serviced equally as well... Grin

If you feel the need to take the back of the bus back over..we'll just run you out of town...but I have a feeling that you'll be our best customer. Devil
