Quote:
Human beings throughout history have covered over 70 miles in a day -- in some cases up to 100 miles (if I recall correctly from my anthropology texts).

Geronimo and his band of Apaches, for example, covered 70 miles a day on foot while the calvary who chased them could only manage 30 or so -- on horseback! The Apaches traveled in a very efficient, natural way, however. They would run for a while until they felt like walking, then they would walk for a while, pick up the pace again, slow down after a while, run faster again, etc. They were most definitely burning fat for energy, as they were living on low-carb desert foods and animal flesh.

One name I've heard for this type of running is "coyote running." I've also observed the Tarahumara traveling the same way -- short bursts of fast running broken up by walking or very slow jogging. Also, the terrain in native peoples' environments dictated their pace (up and down mountains, as opposed to modern level-ground running).

For those of you who Heart cardio... here's a little Bus Record Board for coyote running. Please post your personal bests for each of these events here in this thread. I will update the Record Board when someone breaks one of the records.

Make sure this is actual walking/running done on a treadmill or outdoors. If you set an alarm on a wrist watch, you will easily be able to determine the distance you covered in that particular amount of time.

So... let's see your personal bests in coyote running. If one of your personal bests breaks one of the Bus Records, please indicate that in your post, and I'll update the Record Board.

Please convert all miles to kilometres. miles X 1.6 = kilometres

Happy trails!

I went to the park tonight and did coyote running. It was great. I covered these distances for my personal bests.

8 km in 1 hour
14.4 km in 2 hours
14.4 km in 3 hours
14.4 km in 6 hours
14.4 km in 12 hours
14.4 km in 24 hours

I also set ALL the Bus Records! LOL

I'm sure these will get broken here real soon. Wink

I guess in the future I will need to go for a certain length of time, instead of a certain distance.

jeff,

It was your desire to do a certain timed run that inspired me to start this thread. And, you mentioned using coyote running to do it. Then, when I was at the park that night, doing a coyote run of my own, I thought about what you said in your journal.

Do you wear a wrist watch while running? How did you know that exact time? If you do wear one, does it have an alarm on it? I'm buying one today, one with an alarm and a big display, and hopefully one with a countdown (that would be cool). I'm getting one with the loudest alarm. I know these are very inexpensive, cuz I picked up one for hiking for a buck at a dollar store. I'd use that one, but I cut the straps off of it already, and it's in my backpacking gear.

BTW... in the future, anytime you do a coyote run on your treadmill or outdoors, and you go for say 2 hours. During that 2 hours, just make sure to check the distance at 1 hour. And, of course, this will give you a personal best for all six coyote running distances. Then, you can try to break these personal best distances in the future... and, in the process, you might break some Bus Records. Just post your list of personal bests in this thread the next time you go do a coyote run.

This is gonna be good motivation for me... and will help you get ready to do that timed run that you mentioned in your journal.

Whenever I'm in the mood to time myself, I bring my cell phone along....it has a stop watch on it.

Wow... so you carry a cell phone while you're running? Does it have an alarm feature, that you can set, so you know when 1, 2 or 3 hours have elapsed?

It doesn't have an alarm....at least not that I know of. LOL Nobody knows my number, so I never get any calls.

Ok Dean....the first record has fallen. Last night in the park I did 6.5 miles, or 10.4km in 1 hour.

The park where I run has a walking/running/biking path around the perimeter and it is approximately square in shape, adn is one mile around, so I can easily estimate increments down to 1/8 of a mile, which would be half of one side of the square. I'll use the last 1/8 mile completed, then convert to km.

Yesterday in the park:

2 hours......19.4km (12.125 miles)
3 hour, and everything beyond......21km

And my legs feel fine this morning. The potassium I've been taking is working wonders. Yup

It should be 21. I think I cut out the .125 miles in the other posts.

A new personal best for 1 hour. I made it exactly 7 miles, which is 11.2km. I did this on an empty stomach, my last meal being 18 hours before. Glycogen? Hah, I laugh at glycogen. LOL

It always seems like I actually have MORE energy after a long fast!

WTG on your new record, jeff Happy But, when are you gonna go for that 6 hour record? Isn't that the race you are training for? Go for 50 km! Yup

I'm thinking sometime in mid to late sept., when the weather is a bit cooler and less humid. I'm actually thinking 50km is doable. Wow
