I've found nitrate free bacon (smoked but not cured) in the grocery store, but I have yet to find sugar free bacon.  The nitrate free has brown sugar on the list of ingredients.  I don't care for side pork.  Does anyone know where I could get sugar free bacon?  Or any alternatives besides side pork?

I don't know.  The side pork I am talking about is sliced like bacon, but not cured or smoked.

Costco has their own brand of sugar free bacon, but it's not nitrate free.

Thanks, I'll look there.

I found Hormel brand Nitrate free Uncured bacon at the regular grocery store today, it was on closeout for $1.99 each, I bought 6. Grin   It is cured with sugar but the price was right. It's normally $5.99.

If I could afford local bacon I would buy it in a second though. My mortgage is a priority right now.

Karen, although it might cost more, you could check eatwild and find a farmer near you that will sell you bacon that is not cured with nitrates and does not have sugar added. You might also be able to order some online from a farm not so near you.

BTW, Fresh Side Pork = Pork Belly

Fresh side pork is the same cut as slab bacon but it is fresh.

You could try soaking regular bacon in water overnight. That supposedly leeches most of the preservatives out of it.

Thanks, Dean, I'll start by checking at the meat market, too.

I fried some of that up and didn't like it either.  I put some salt on some of it and it tasted a little better, but I wouldn't buy it again.

Man...I would have bought out the store! I love that stuff and pay full price for it because I just can't live without it. I tried it because it was Nitrate free but fell in love with the flavor...now I'm hungry- mmmm bacon.
