from my intro at the Busstop.....
Yes, I'm back on the Magic Bus! I don't remember which username I had when I was here before, but that doesn't matter, I think. I will start a journal right away so I don't need to repeat myself too much...

In a nutshell: I lost a lot of weight on ZC with restricted fat in 2006, and it stayed off till mid 2007. Then I had an awful experience with somebody I trusted - what's new - and started taking cream in my coffee again and had a piece of cheese now and then. That caused cravings but I didn't really notice, and I kept it reasonable, weight wise as well.
In 2008 I went on a working vacation for two months - in my motorhome, to the UK and Ireland - and had cream in my coffee every day and cheese every weekend. I also had mistakenly ground onion as seasoning instead of garlic but I only discovered this the other day!

That caused another weight gain and more cravings than I had realized so I fell for the theory that my metabolism could be cured by eating the "right" carbs. I gained 25 kilos in two months and the doctor kept saying it would all be right....

In April I did not fit on my bicycle anymnore and that's when I had enough. When I demanded to know from the doctor how long it would take before I would finally get down again, she got a bit pissed off and told me about 5 years!!! I can't afford that at my age so decided to go back on ZC.

I found another forum where I learnt a lot, there's a lot of info there, but I must admit I am not too crazy about some of the attitude that I come across there.

So... when I heard the Magic Bus is still going strong and the people here are more ... what shall I say... respectful? I decided to come back here and see if this will work!

Hope that's OK....

Willeke from the Netherlands
[pronounced Vilica]

Welcome Back!

I lived in the Netherlands for a little bit as a child and my step-mother is from there as well. As a kid, I adored breakfast Dutch style - bread with butter and chocolate sprinkles along with stroopwaffles (sp?)  LOL

I still request Gouda cheese when someone in my family returns there for a visit - I only ask that they keep all the sweet goodies to themselves though  Wink

Jump on in to the July challenge over in the ward if you haven't already - Look forward to reading your journal!

thanks Kateryna and Metal Mama! I think it's three years ago that I was a member here. I tried to eat as much fatty meat as I could and I gained weight! Some members said that was not possible, but I did! Then I started shaving off fat and then I started losing really well.

At the moment I'm still in two minds, eating less meat (protein) and more fat (= cheaper) or more protein and less fat... I think I'll try option one first, and then see how that goes. I am totally off cream and off cheese and even off sweeteners. Have one cup of real coffee a day, and for the rest I drink decaf or rooibos tea - or decaf Earl Grey. or water!

I'll just put two pictures here, bit embarrassing, but look at the difference!

April 2009 after 7 months "healthy"carbs approx 310 lbs

June 2009 after 2 months ZC approx 298 lbs

And I'll leave it at this for today, it's almost time for bed here! Hope the Americans here are having a wonderful 4th!!

Willeke, you look great  Sunny

I have found in my very extensive experience (lmao) at zero-carbing for 22 days that I don't obsess about protein and fat percentages. I use only as much fat as I need to cook the meat since I don't have a grill. I don't add extra or remove extra. And I don't have 3 meals a day. I only eat when hungry so it's been working out to once or twice a day.

But everyone is different and what works for one doesn't for another. However, sharing options is a learning experience. Gives us ideas on how we can tweak our plans to make them more effective.

thanks for the welcome back Bibi!! Small world, isn't it??!!

Hahahaha Kateryna! I'm sure you have a lot of (V)LC experience. It's exactly right,  no two bodies are the same and what works for me, does not necessarily work for you. But it can help to see how others do it and try things out till you find what works for you.

I have never before  given up all sweeteners, but am glad I did that now and hope that'll help a bit, too! I know that I will lose weight when I just eat when hungry and drink when thirsty but I must admit I am a bit ipatient. I do not need to lose ALL my surplus in a few months, but I'd love to be back soon where I was in September last year. Ah well, my first goal I've met, I can use my bicycle again, and now for getting more energy again!

I'm not good at challenges, I'm afraid. I make a plan and stick to it as long as I feel it is OK but change it when I feel I need to <g>.

Willeke I too gave up sweeteners 22 days ago and don't miss them. I am not brave enough to skip my coffee though. It doesn't seem to be affecting my weight loss or triggering cravings though so I'll keep the coffee in for now.

Willeke, I was just over at the other board and the clique-ishness and childishness never ceases to amaze me. Too bad! Oh well. Guess I've been around too long and seen so much that it's just best to observe and say nothing in future.

I must admit I feel really sad about them too, for if your complete value as a human beimng is only based oin how you look and how healthy you are, then you're in for some nasty surprises when you get older.

I  think for the time being I keep my journal there, and I will see what happens, I am NOT going to jump in anymore and give my opinion. At least, I'll try!
I don't know what you're referrng to right now, I'm at work and allow myself only a break now and then <g>
Am almost done for the day, ppffeewwww

There were a few comments I made that were completely ignored, which is ok as it's a big board. Then I posted a comment in kkcarlton's journal about beef. You can see for yourself.

and the funny thing is that it is a compliment to be called young! in a way it is very sad, too, of course. I like the thread of animals on ZC, and the blogs of course.

I lived in Rotterdam - I was quite young so I don't have many memories but the ones I do are pretty special. The windmills of course, and I would go out with my father boating and I can remember being allowed to pay the fee at the locks - a man would lower a wooden shoe tied to the end of a fishing pole to collect the toll and I was so excited about putting the money in. I also remember being taken to some sort of Kinder Village - it had a whole town in miniature (child size) and many mushrooms and elves I believe  Happy so much of those memories are faded now - I'd love to get back there some day.

Yes, the cheese is very expensive here and it doesn't taste as good either - nothing beats fresh Gouda straight from the source Grin

Kateryna, it is true, it's just as if we are invisible, older men are a bit more interesting, especially when they try and run <g>. I don't mind so much anymore, but am just not wasting my time and energy on that.
Bobi, I am still a member of the Meat and Eggs forum, that was established when we were all banned from the Canadian Atkins forum at the time because we did not eat that Nutrition stuff they were pushing. I still visit there a lot, bunch of really nice people, but there are too many other diets and that does distract me now and then, call me weak.
MetalMama Rotterdam is very close to Gouda! I live at the other side of the country now, on the German border in the North East. I like that a lot better, much quieter and more beautiful nature! You must have visited Madurodam, and maybe also de Efteling, you could google on those to see if you recognize anything. It would be great if you could make it back one day!!

Oh, you're thinking of a different forum.  That place is pretty much dead now.  Dean started the Bus Trip in August of '06.

I have read some comments on ZC on the nocarberforum, and in some respects they ae right, and that's why I am here now. I am also on the Meat&Eggs forum, but it's quiet there, but very very nice people as well.

Tunnelvision, yes! I call it blinkers <g>.

I very much eat what I feel like, but I notice again that sometimes I get a little low bloodsugar from beef. I have had nice beef this week but will change this now, for the scales have not gone down this month. (I always weigh in once a month.) On the contrary, I am up again. Last week I was down to my lowest weight since I started ZC but had salty sausage so it went up again. I had expected to lose that extra in a few days but it hasn't happened yet.
I am going to have one nice and juicy ribeye or prime rib or T-bone a day and for the rest I'll have lean pork or chicken. I have to lose that weight, and when I did it this way in 2006, I felt wonderful and lost weight, so I'm ready to try that again. As long as I have the juicy fatty ribeye once a day, I don't think I'll have any risk of rabbit starvation.
I am pretty sure that the same rule applies here: everybody's body is different, and I need to do what works for me. Does anybody reading this, know what percentage of fat you need as a minimum? I have tried to find this information, but it doesn't seem to be available. I know that lean rabbit is extremely lean, a lot leaner than lean pork, so I think when I forego the starved rabbits from the arctic, I should be safe!

Watch this space, I'll let you know.

I have no idea about the minimum amount of fat we need, but if you at one fatty steak per day, you shold be fine.

I'd say 95% of my days consist of a VERY fatty untrimmed Ribeye, and then either chicken or pork (usually wings or ribs). Sounds much like your plan...and delicious!  Grin

As far as fat needs, I think you'll be fine - I don't know about the minimum, but a fatty steak should take care of it no problem.

Best of luck!

a question that I've been trying to find an answer to. When I eat steak I sometimes get an insuline response. How unhealthy is that? I don't have that with chicken or pork.

Example: last night I had a HUGE prime rib. It was rather lean, so I added a lot of butter to make sure I had enough fat to go with it, but still I got low blood sugar symptoms - yawning like mad without the sleepy feeling that should have been present if this were sleepy yawns instead of low blood sugar yawns.
The same happened the day before with a normnal sized steak - 12 oz or so.

Hmmmmmmm now I'm writing this I am thinking that mayube the lactose in the butter could have caused this?? I will fry my next steak in coconut oil, let's see if that makes a difference. Chicken and pork I always cook in the oven without extra fat or butter.

Will copy this to the other site as well, you never know if somebody has an answer - or somebody may be helped by my observations!

Willeke, it is good that you are experimenting with how different meats affect your body and ultimately you will find a solution.  Yup

I remembered that picture of your granddaughter. She is so beautiful. How old is she now? Do you have any recent pictures of her?

Willeke, it may very well be the butter.  It's difficult to imagine that beef would cause this response, but chicken and pork would not.

Did  not have the same symptoms with the coconut oil, so hopefully that's one culprit apprehended <g>

It is a cute picture, I do want to find another avatar, but have to make sure it's small enough and I do not always have the patience for that.

Here are a few more recent pictures. Berber is 5 now and Roos is 6, but they're in the same class at school because she's pretty smart.

Roos eating sausages and Dougal looks
Roos eating sausages and now both wolfhounds are watching!

I'm not writing very much here, for I report in at the July challenge! Just as a note, I've started to have one T-bone or rib eye or prime rib a day plus one or two or three chicken breastst and it seems to be working again!
I ordered pork ribs today, but if the scales stop moving when I eat those, I will have to forego them again - for a while.

Willeke, keep it up and congratulations on finding a winning combination. Yes, check out the ribs and see what happens.  At least you know what works  Sunny

hey surfer girl!
I'm doing fine. Am not losing much weight, unfortunately, but apparently there's a LOT of healing going on so I hope the weight will start dropping off one of these days. I am losing inches, though, so that's OK. I keep looking at the picture of fat vs muscle, where you can see hum much more volume is taken by the same weight of fat compared to muscle.

The dogs are great, too, thanks!

I cannot write in all the places where I would like, and since people here eat a lot of other stuff that I don;t want to hear about, I'm not coming here as often as before. Don't want to willingly bring temptation in my life, my body can't handle any carbs, apparently.

and how are YOU doing??

Hey Willeke, thanks for popping by to say hello  Sunny

Yes the healing takes time and stress also prevents weight loss so eat well according to your plan, remove as much stress from your life as possible, and your body will release the weight when it's ready.

Hugs  Comfort

Good to hear you are losing inches! I have lost weight but am the same waist circumference for almost two months now. So glad you are keeping from the carbs quite easily. I always enjoyed seeing you post your meals.
