14 day meat & egg challengewith the exception of a teeny bit of cream for my coffee, can't give up my coffee
OK, so I need to get back to basics. For the next two weeks it's only gonna be:
Unlimited:
meat
eggs
Limited:
coffee & very little cream (morning only, limited to two cups)
spices
hot sauce
And that's it. And if I fall off the wagon (which I refuse to do) I have to start all over. If anyone wants to join me, you're welcome!
Today's going to start day 1.
Breakfast: two softly scrambled eggs with cayenne and cracked black pepper. Two cups of coffee with a total of 2 tbsp cream
Lunch: 7.5 oz grilled chuck steak (medium rare) with a light dusting of garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, cayenne & thyme.
|
Manaloa
|
Supper: 5 oz grilled chuck steak, same as above.
And lots of water aaallllll day.
And so ends Day 1. Yay for me!! I actually stuck to it all day!!
|
Dean

WTG, Manaloa!
The first few days are always the hardest. If you can just get through them, it becomes easier and easier!
We are all rootin' for you!
|
Manaloa
|
Day 2
Breakfast: 5 oz of steak, but I don't think I can finish it. I'll just take what's left and have it for lunch with my deviled eggs.
Lunch: deviled eggs (3 whole eggs)
|
Manaloa
|
Yay! So I'm home now and I did really well so far today. I'm making up another batch of deviled eggs since my daughter ate the rest of last batch. I'm making tacos for supper tonight, so I might have some taco meat and some more deviled eggs. I'm really not hungry at all, but that's ok, since supper's 3 hrs away.
|
Manaloa
|
Only ate deviled eggs for supper. I was so full that I wasn't even tempted by the cheesecake I'd made for dessert.
|
Dean

That's great!
One thing I've found is the longer you just eat protein and fat (and plenty of fat), you won't really desire eating junk. It's when you DO eat junk that all of a sudden you have these cravings for it. Exercise helps too. The more you do, the less you crave junk.
Sounds like you are doing wonderful with this, Mana.
Keep up the good work!

I find this to be very true, Dean. I don't have even the slightest desire to eat junk anymore. We took my mom a cake on Mother's Day.....it was also her birthday. Everybody else had cake and ice cream. I just said "no thank you". I think my family is finally getting used to the fact that I don't eat that crap anymore. They are beginning to just assume that I won't have any. I love it!!!

I really do need to get back into exercising. After falling off this WOE over the weekends, I don't have as much energy nor do I sleep as well lately. I'm hoping that this challenge will help me stay on it long enough to get that energy back.
So I did really well today. Didn't have any appetite, though. That's one of the things I love about this WOE.
Had a couple fried eggs this morning with my coffee and cream. That filled me up completely. I only ate my steak this afternoon because I was bored (7.5oz) I got home and had a couple more deviled eggs for early supper/late snack. I'm still comfortably full even though it's been about 5 hours since I last ate. Last couple days I've only managed about 1200 cals. But I feel really good.

Manaloa,
During the first half of April, I was doing a Challenge with some others. I was doing IF then... I still am. My calories were pretty low. That's OK. Calorie reduction, and going without food for periods of time are really good for your body... gives it a chance to detox, heal, rebuild, etc. No need to force yourself to eat if you aren't hungry.
Glad to hear things are still going well for you.
Keep up the great work!
|
Manaloa
|
Day 4Yay!! I'm back down to my lowest weight!!!
So at about 9 or 10pm last night I started getting some hunger pangs finally, so I finished off the last couple of deviled eggs. Now this morning I'm soo not hungry for anything. I'm packing a couple extra of my crockpot spicy chicken legs for lunch just in case.
|
Dean
|
WTG, Mana!
Feels great when you have gotten down to your lowest weight, huh?
Yah... I was going to suggest that you experiment with going without eating first part of the day... BUT, with some good food that you can get to if you need it. Wouldn't want to be caught with only junk food to eat if you suddenly got hungry.
Keep up the great work!
|
Jaime
|
Manaloa,
I have a question for you. Are you using mayonnaise for the devilled eggs and what about oils and fats? What, if any, are you using?
|
Manaloa
|
Jamie, I'm using Hellman's and some horseradish spicy brown mustard in the deviled eggs. Some paprika and cayenne over the top. The last batch I made was about 11 eggs and I used maybe 3 tbsp of mayo for the mix and maybe 1-2 tbsp of mustard. Oh, and a little cracked black pepper.
Dean, yeah, I'm really happy! I refuse to gain and lose the same lbs again. So for lunch around 11am I had a couple of the chicken legs, they seemed kinda small to me but meh. Then around 2-3pm I decided to eat the other two legs since we were going to have a bbq at work with a lot of temptations. So I wasn't hungry at 5pm but had a frankenburger anyways (it was awful, very processed and chewy, eeeewwww) Then after I got off of work I've been shopping for the last couple of hours and am just now starting to feel a teeny bit hungry.
this WOE.
|
Manaloa
|
So about 10pm-ish I ended up eating a little bit of the meat I had shredded from the rest of the legs that were in the crockpot. I don't know had maybe 2-3 oz if that and was fine again. Woke up this morning with no appetite again. So I'm just having my morning coffee (yes, with a bit of cream of course) And contemplating going for a bike ride before the family gets up.

Since I am pretty well settled into my new home,I think I will join you in this, starting today (Saturday May 19 2007). I don't drink coffee nor do I do dairy anymore so those are out for me.
I do drink tea but I am trying to get away from that. I have to go out grocery shopping today so I am going to look for a zero carb hot herbal drink because I do like to have a warm drink when I wake up in the morning (Canada gets pretty cold in the mornings here). I've even taken to drinking hot water with a half teaspoon of lemon juice in it.
I use the lemon juice because without it I get back pain in my kidney area.
With lemon juice I have no pain at all.
I have no real desire for vegetables anymore. When I do it happens maybe once a week, so I have a small salad made up of cucumber and lettuce or a small serving of cooked nonstarchy veggies, but in the interest of the meat and egg challenge I will cut that out.
One addiction that I do have that I am *trying* to abolish (with much difficulty) is drinking diet pepsi. I'm down to a couple of cans a week now
and moving across the street from a variety store has not helped getting rid of this addiction. It is so much easier now to get one as opposed when I lived a lot further away from any store and involved a bus trip to get me there.
I think I will just go *cold turkey* with the diet pepsis for the next two weeks.
I'm glad you are allowing spices. I do not use salt but I love all spices and herbs. I do use them sparingly as well. I want them to *enhance* the flavours of my food, not overpower them. If I feel lazy that particular day I might not even use a spice at all. Just too much trouble opening the jar. LOL.
Also I did make my own mayonnaise but with packing and moving I am using a store bought one that I like...Hellmans. I measure this out when I use it because I am trying to keep my calories between 1200 and 1500 a day.
Do you use Fitday at all to measure your portions? I find that great and use it daily.

Manaloa
|
Yay! Welcome!!
I love tea! Why are you trying to get away from tea? Of course the only time I really have it is in a restaurant, unless it's winter, then I have to have my hot tea.
I used to be a real vegetable fiend! But I don't miss them at all now. Oooh, diet sodas, yeah I gave those up years ago. It made me sooo bloated and I never felt right. I have a big problem with most any kind of sweetener. I just got some stevia though, so I might try it after my challenge. My hubby tried going cold turkey on the diet pop and he was such a bear. I don't know if it was giving up the sweetener or the caffeine.
I spices. I find I don't use as much as I used to, though. I use Hellman's too. I don't use a lot of it, since I've never been a huge fan of mayo.
I use sparkpeople. Since starting the challenge I'm averaging right around 1200 cals. 60-70% fat to 30-40% protein. I checked out Fitday before but I found sparkpeople easier for me. I especially like their recipe calculator, where you can input you recipe ingredients calculate for # of servings and get the cals/fat/carb all that ratio. Another great site is http://www.calorie-count.com/calories/browse.php
I use this a lot when I can't "find" the meat that I'm cooking up.

Good luck Manaloa and Jaime on completing your challenge! you can do it!

Jaime
|
Thank you Karen.
I'm giving up on tea because I am trying to get away from caffeine.
I seem to feel a lot better when I don't have any amount in my system.
I found a nice Rooiboos herbal tea.
Today I was not too sucessful in giving up the diet pepsis. I ended up drinking 2 because when I was out I could not find a decent bottled water anywhere. All that was available was Aquafina or Dasani. Two brands I detest so it was drink the DP or go thirsty. I didn't want to go thirsty.
I walked around for 4 hours today....yes....4 hours. I'm exhausted but glad I did that.
In my new neighbourhood there is no bus service so I am forced to walk or take a cab if I want to get somewhere and since taking cabs is too costly, I walk.
Forced exercise...it works for me.
I tried Sparkpeople but found I liked Fitday better.
Sparkpeople seemed too slow for my DSL.

Thanks Karen!
Well, that makes sense. Caffeine doesn't bother me at all without the carbs. Used to make me jittery, but now nothing. I just like the taste of coffee and tea. I also love decaf mint green tea, very refreshing and perks me up when I'm having a long afternoon at work.
Must be a day for walking, we went shopping at an outdoor mall after going to the movies today and just got home.

Not only did I make it to day 5 but I also made it through the first day of the weekend!!!

|
Yay!! The weekend's over!! I stayed on plan!
I've got a lot of bbq'd country style pork ribs in the fridge and about a half dozen chicken breasts and a new 18 ct carton of eggs, so I'm set for the rest of the week.
Oh, yeah, today I had an egg for breakfast, over easy. Lunch was 11 chicken wings, 1/2 garlic parmesan (yes, I know that's a cheese, but I'm counting it as a spice, ) and 1/2 caribbean jerk. And I didn't end up eating dinner until about 8:30 tonight and it was just a few forkfuls of tuna salad, just tuna and mayo and some spices. And now I'm off to bed.
|
jeff
|
Mana, you are doing great! Keep it up.
|
Manaloa
|
Thanks Jeff!
So today has been going really well. I had a couple of over easy eggs in the morning and some chicken salad for lunch around noon. I'm not terribly hungry at this point (could be because I just satisfied my craving for some coffee )
I don't know about the whole IF thing. I don't think I can go the whole day until late afternoon without eating. However, if I eat a bunch in the morning/early afternoon, then I'm usually not hungry all evening and if I am it's just a tiny bit and a couple bites of something will usually tide me over till the next morning. Does IF work that way?
|
Dean
|
Manaloa,
A lot of people find that they do better with breakfast and dinner (just two meals) and nothing else. Some use a light snack or two, perhaps. Others go all day without eating, and then have two meals in the evening, spread apart. Some alternate. It is up to what works best for you. But, there really is no need to "eat three squares" on this WOE... and that may not be a good way to eat anyway.
Intermittent Fasting is just a way to give your body a rest from digesting food, so it can attend to other things, like immune functions, etc.
Sounds like you are cruisin' right along! Congrats!
|
Manaloa
|
I think my problem right now is that it really doesn't take much to make me not hungry anymore. So don't really feel an inclination to stuff myself and then not eat for 8 hours.
I had one egg over easy at about 5:30pm Went for a bike ride with my daughter again at a quarter to 8, rode about 2 miles. Came home and had another egg over easy and I'm good for the night. Last couple of days I've only been averaging about 1000 cals. But I still have lots of energy. It's too bad it got dark otherwise I probably would have ridden some more.
|
Dean
|
Yah... right now, I'm trying to build muscle and having a hard time getting in the necessary calories... cuz I'm NEVER hungry! I go ALL day without eating, and then eat small portions at night. NOT good for my current situation!
Gonna have to start forcing myself to eat... or getting back to my Rocky Raw Egg Challenge!
|
Manaloa

urg! raw egg! The closest I can do is sunny side up, I gotta have at least the whites cooked.

| Manaloa wrote: | | urg! raw egg! The closest I can do is sunny side up, I gotta have at least the whites cooked. |
I agree that the whites are nasty raw. The yolk is no problem, expecially if the yolk is not broken....you can swallow the thing whole and not even taste it really.
|
Dean
|
But, I love the taste of the yolks. They are great. Add a bit of pepper and even better. I always get eggs over easy so I can put the egg yolk in my mouth at the end and "pop" it in my mouth, and taste all that yummy yolk. I only swallow them whole in the Rocky Challenge cuz I want to preserve the nutrients as much as possible... leave them as undisturbed as possible.
Really, jeff... if you just tried this ONCE, you'd see that it really isn't so bad. There is really no taste to the whites. It's just squeamishness... that you can overcome. TRY IT! Cuz I'm gonna keep twisting your arm till ya do!

I know it's not the taste.....it's the texture. Ok, I'll do one today when I'm done here on the Bus. I'll report back later.

Day 8Today was kinda odd for food.
Wasn't hungry again in the morning, but I also didn't sleep well, so after my cups of coffee w/cream I didn't feel like eating anything. I brought some chicken with caesar dressing for lunch, but only ate about 2 oz worth, because it just didn't taste right. I think ketosis is kicking in, or something. Got home about 2pm or so and had 3 eggs over easy and 1 1/2 slices of bacon. I haven't had bacon in quite a while and it was really salty, blech. I'm just now at 10pm starting to get hungry again, but I don't feel like eating. I'm really tired so I think I'll just go to sleep. G-nite!
|
Manaloa
|
Day 9Wow! I can't believe it's been over a week!
Didn't have any trouble going to sleep last night and slept like a log. Woke up not hungry again. Having my morning cuppa jo with cream. Down to 216.5. I'm going to change my ticker at the end of my challenge. So far I started on 5/15 at 223lbs and today on the 9th day I'm down to 216.5lbs, which is 6.5 lbs total to date. Yay!
And the best part is that I have so much energy and I feel awesome! I don't ache in my joints anymore. I'm so not hungry all the time. The food does not bore me, in fact I love what I'm eating. I just don't feel like eating. The few times I get hunger pangs, they're not bad at all and there's no urgency to it. And it's just hunger pangs, not a painful aching like before if I wouldn't eat "on time". I just can't get over how wonderful I feel.
I've got some eggs boiling on the stove for lunch. I might have an egg for breakfast since I haven't eaten since yesterday afternoon. I just hate to feel like I have to force myself to eat.
|
jeff

Ok, I did one whole raw egg last night! It really was not bad at all. I plugged my nose like Dean suggested, although I'm not sure how necessary that really is. I just swallowed the whole thing down in one gulp.

Manaloa,
This is my experience exactly. I'm so glad you have gotten into this, and are feeling so good with it. Keep up the good work, cuz it will just keep getting easier. BTW... to really keep on the path, you should keep to your exercise as well. That's what I have discovered is the BEST way for me, anyway.

I still don't think I could do the whole raw egg deal. I don't think I have the guts.
Did a little biking yesterday, not much to speak of, because I was so tired that morning from not sleeping, then we had a HA meeting to go to. I'm planning on mowing the front yard now and then deep cleaning the kitchen, so I'm going to count that as my exercise for the day.
So, besides the coffee this morning I had 2 HB eggs with a little bit of mustard and then the same for lunch. It's about 3pm now and I'm not terribly hungry, so we'll see about supper. It's going to be BBQ ribs.

Day 9 is done!! Yay!
So my DH wanted to go out to dinner tonight, since it's the one night of the week that I don't work late. I ordered the grilled salmon over alfredo pasta and DH ordered fire-something grilled chicken and rice and we shared. I had about 2 oz of salmon and about 2 oz of chicken. Once again not even tempted by any of the other stuff. Although the salmon was overcooked a bit on the dry side, blech. And I'm satisfied. Weird. Not even remotely hungry. Honestly, I can't get over it. I used to always be hungry or not satisfied and always want something more. I just can't get over it.

No kidding!!
Well today is the start of Day 10
And, drum roll pleeeeeese ..............
Whoooosh! I am down 2 more lbs to 214.5!!
Wow! Once again got a fantastics night sleep and full of energy today. I actually have an appetite this morning and am having 2 eggs over easy. And of course, my morning cuppa jo.

Congrats on the loss! Keep goin'!

You know, the longer I go stictly on the meat & egg, the more IFing seems like a possiblity. Before I had to eat breakfast, but now it's not such an urgent thing. I think I'm going to try it this weekend.

I'm finding that I can pretty easily skip a meal. It does help if I can mentally prepare myself for it. In other words, it helps if I know ahead of time that I will be doing it. If I'm expecting to eat, and then it doesn't happen, it's a little different.
|
Manaloa
|
Yeah, I know what you mean, Jeff.
So today is Day 12 Yay!
Weight is still holding at 214.5. I feel great, I'm sleeping hard. It's great!
This weekend is going to be a bit tricky with food. Going shopping all day with my best friend so I'll be having lunch with her somewhere. And tomorrow my parents want to take us out to the casino buffet again. So eh, I'm staying on plan irregardless, but it's going to be a challenge. And sometime this weekend we're going to HuHot (YES! ) and I'm going to stuff myself silly there.
I might just IF all around those meals.
|
Manaloa
|
Day 14
Yay!! Today is the last day!! I'm back up to 215.0, which I'm blaming on the obscene amounts of sodium in the food for the last couple days, between HuHot and the casino buffet.
So as far as weight loss from:
5/15/07 - 5/28/07
Starting weight: 223lbs
Ending weight: 215lbs
A total loss of 8lbs in 14 days. Yay!
I have to admit I was missing one or two little things, like salsa which I'm now going to add back in. I might even do a cup of salad so that I can have a taco salad which sounds awesome! It's still going to be predominantly meat based and the vegetation is going to be treated more as condiments/accessories. I have to say though, it feels really good to get past that 220 mark. For a while it was like my body was defective and I wasn't able to lose no matter how much work I was putting in.
|
Manaloa
|
Oh yeah, and I IF'd yesterday and part of Saturday.
Saturday actually wasn't so bad. I went without breakfast and when I went out to lunch with my friend, I wasn't even hungry for lunch, but once I started eating, then I became hungry.
Yesterday we stayed at home all day until supper, and in the morning I had really strong hunger sensations that came and went. By mid-afternoon, I just got a strong empty feeling that came and went. And then we went out for supper, and at that point I felt like I could take it or leave it, but once I started eating, I realized I was actually hungry.
What was nice was the fact that I didn't get that shaky dizzy feeling that I used to get when my diet consisted mainly of vegetation. I was kind of expecting it which was why I did this at home, but it didn't come. If anything I seemed to have an excess of energy and deep cleaned my house again.
|
jeff
|
Mana, awesome job. 8 pounds in 14 days is fantastic. And you're probably right about sodium being to blame for the one pound gain. Keep up the great work!
|
Dean
|
WTG, Mana!
That's wonderful you made it!
Yah, I agree about the veggies being more like condiments. I use them (rarely) like that. I thought I would use them more than I am, but I just never think about buying that stuff. I did buy a big bottle of salsa that I will use in omelets some day.
I know EXACTLY what you mean about not having that shaky/dizzy feeling while fasting. It is a real even, clean feeling, and it seems you just keep getting MORE energy, which is kinda weird, but cool.
Great job! Keep up the good work.
