About intermittent fasting (IF)

Hi,

I'm drawn to intermittent fasting and I'm interested to know if anyone has experience with weightlifting (or other intense sport) and IF. Does your body do ok with just one hit of protein during your daily meal or does it need a more steady flow of protein intake?

I'm also interested to know why people do IF. Is it to lose weight/bodyfat? Is it to give your digestive system a break? To save time?

Thanks,
So
jeff

Sol, I do a little lifting, but mosty I run.  I sometimes dabble with IF, but for one week last summer I did it every day.  It did not hinder my workouts at all.  When I do it, I guess it is mostly to give my digestive system a break.  I now usually eat only 2 meals per day, so I often go a long time without eating.

I lost alot of weight in a hurry when I combined IF, ZC, reduced calories, and exercised.

And, as far as you can tell, you didn't lose lean mass? I've got a goal of getting to 13% by year-end and might do bursts of IF+ZC+reduced calories if I'm short of my goal but it's bodyfat I want to burn, not muscle.

I think I lost very little, if any lean mass. My avatar pic was taken at the end of my IF, ZC, reduced calorie and exercise period.  I lost 8 pounds in 7 days.

Another IF thread! LOL We'll need to start an IF forum for them all. Wink

IF. I don't plan it, but I do it a lot. I used to think it was cuz I started my days with java and cream, and therefore I could go so long without being hungry, but, I quit coffee and cream three weeks ago, and yesterday and today I did IF the whole day, up till 7pm yesterday and up till 9pm today. Both days, I went to the park in the late afternoon/early evening, and I went nearly 10 km yesterday and 8 km today. Today, I was doing HIIT Coyote Running. I sprinted and jogged and so forth, and I had loads of energy. I've been ZC for two and a half months. I had these same results all the time last summer. Once I went 50 km in a 24 hour period, and I believe I fasted the whole time. It's in the Tribal Games forum.

Anyway, as far as my reasons for doing it. Digestion is hard on the body. The immune system has to use so many aminos to take care of guarding the gates. Then there are enzymes, which, if you eat cooked food, have to get involved. And, a whole host of other proteins have to get involved in this process. Giving your body a break from this activity is really good. Your body has a chance to do housekeeping and heal. Of course, another reason why I naturally do IF, is cuz, on ZCarnivore eating, I'm never hungry. I don't have up and down blood glucose all day long. Grazing is very hard on the body. We are carnivores, not herbivores. We are not meant to graze. For a human, IF is as natural as carnivorous eating. They actually go hand in hand. Yup

this is a great thread  Heart

I do IF for the exact reasons Dean listed (isnt he a smart one) and also because it is convenient for me during work hours. on my days off I eat all day long. A few weeks ago I was dealing with dizziness at work so I took some homemade stock/broth (thank goodness for the weston price site which taught me how to make it proper) and had that midday and some days I need to eat hb eggs or something if ive not eaten enough brekky. other than that.. im just not hungry!

I try to do what my body tells me.. my body is the boss  Wink

please let me know what you think about some of the posts in the other thread, id really love to hear what you have to say!

I believe that IF comes naturally/unconsciously to ZC eaters but I am not quite there yet.  I may have to try IF consciously in order to get out of the nibbling all day at work habit.  I definitely started the snacking to help stay away from all the "crap" they have around the office but now I notice I am doing it even when I am not really hungry.  It has only been about 1 week since I started attempting zero carb so maybe it will take me a while to learn my bodies signals.

Nikki, great pic!

It took me a while to adjust, but now I do it naturally.  I don't have a schedule or window, just eat when I'm hungry. It just so happens that it's not until later in the afternoon or evening. Sometimes though I am hungry in the morning, and if so I'll eat. I don't even think of it as IF anymore, just eating when I'm hungry!

That is a picture of my spoiled little baby Connor - I don't guess I will ever be able to capture quite that kind of moment again.  She was actually looking at me when I pushed the button so I guess my digital camera is a bit slow on the uptake.
