April Carnivore ContestApril Carnivore Contest
All foods should be as natural, fresh, and whole as possible. Animal fat should be kept high, 60-80% of calories, and carbs should be kept as low as possible. The cleaner one eats and the closer they get to an exclusive raw animal diet, the more points they can rack up. The goal is not to be perfect, but to see how close you can get to our ancestor's diet.
Allowed
* any part of any animal (including processed meat)
* eggs
* dairy
* vegetation
* olive/nut oil
* condiments, seasoning, AS
* beverages
>>> To get any points you must have only what's Allowed and remain under 20g carbs. <<<
If you have something not allowed or go over 20g carbs you are out for the day, you get zero points.
Add up your points each day. You can get up to 5 points per day.
One point for each, for having:
- only allowed items + under 20g carbs
- no alcohol + no AS
- no vegetation + no oil
- no processed meat + no dairy (except butter)
- some raw animal part / raw egg
So, for instance, if you had no vegetation and no oil during the day, you would get ONE point for abstaining from those items... or if you had no alcohol and no AS, you would get ONE point for not having those things... or if you had no dairy and no processed meat that day, there's another ONE point.
You can get up to FIVE points per day.

E got me thinking about how to bring all these April Contests together. I think I've come up with a nice solution.
Here is a way we can merge all these April Carnivore Contests into one thread, and, as E alluded to, give the most points (incentive) to those who eat as carnivorously as possible.
I've developed a rubric where participants can get 1-5 points for each day they stick to the Allowed list (a pretty liberal list). The more one moves toward eating just clean raw cuts of animals, giving up rubbish and cow pus, the more points they can rack up. It will really be interesting to see how many points some can accumulate. There are 150 points possible. On a group level there could be massive amounts of points.
One thing I thought would be cool, is if we could split the group of participants (at random) into two groups. I can use random.org to do that. This way, we could have two groups competing, which would make it fun.
Let me know what y'all think of this. Do you want three different wings, or one big party?
|
Kristelle
|
One big party is fine with me. The bigger, the better.
|
Dean
|
The first two posts of this thread have been updated.
I think this thing will be fairly simple. People can rack up points for compliance as well as extra things, like avoiding rubbish, cow pus, etc.
So, who wants in this contest? One big party in one wing. We can divide into two groups (randomly assigned participants) to get some competition goin', if we want.
Who's in?

Especially the heavy cream. I've been drinkin' that stuff before bed! Eating butter and drinking cream have become my sedative. Makes me feel so calm. Is it all that animal fat, or somethin' else?
A couple years ago, I was chunking up raw bison fat every day and eating this stuff, and man it really made me feel great. Only problem is, I was pouring cream over the fat chunks in a bowl, and then eating it like cereal. Was it the cream or the raw bison fat that made me feel so fantastic? Sounds like an experiment may be in order.
| lynnedear wrote: | i see VLC on the dairy...

would that delete me? |
Yes, it would. VLC dairy is like cream, cream cheese, sour cream, cheese, stuff like that. Yogurt is loaded with carbs from lots of lactose. For this Contest, butter is not considered dairy. Many will need that to keep their fat ratios up, eating modern cuts of meat.
| lynnedear wrote: | | one more thing... almond meal, pecan meal.. allowed or not? |
Those are nuts, and they are allowed, but not encouraged, really. You will get more points if you avoid them for this Contest.
|
Dean
|
Allowed
* any part of any animal (natural clean cuts)
* eggs
* unsalted butter
* seasoning, ZC condiments
* water
This will be my April foods. I'm goin' for 5 points a day, for a total of 150 for the month. Anyone with me?
It's basically meat and eggs with some seasoning to jazz it up, and butter to up the fat.
I'm also gonna eat a lot of raw meat and eggs, to start gettin' the hang of that.
|
Kim
|
So the way I am reading this, you would still get all 5 points if you included salt and did not include the rest of the disallowed?
Kim
|
Heather L
|
Dean- Count me in for this one. I like the point system, since it allows for some carnivore days and some with veggies, etc. Great idea. Seperate teams or all together... either seems good to me.
|
Erasmus
|
I'm shooting for 120.
I think it would be cool if all of our happy contestants posted their point goals before the contest starts.
Be sure to pick a number that would be a challenge. I figured 110 would be about right, so I added 10 to make it a challenge.
-E
|
Kristelle
|
I'm aiming for at least 145 points but I should be able to reach 150. Any extra point for eating raw?!
|
Tracy
|
Awesome idea! I am aiming for 100 points. I also added 10 to what seemed reasonable, given my tendencies ;)
Going to really make an effort to just use butter. Cream from time to time. Cheese - rarely if at all. Sigh. I did it before, I can do it again.
Question - what should I count coconut milk as, veg or VLC "dairy"? Or condiment, since I use it in tea? Hmm.
Another question - berries, count as VLC veg? :)
BTW Dean, I will comply with whatever you say. I aspire to total obedience.
|
Erasmus
|
Coconut milk is 50% oil and some carbs and a ton of fibre. In the quantities you're talking about I would consider it a "nut oil".

| Kim wrote: | | So the way I am reading this, you would still get all 5 points if you included salt and did not include the rest of the disallowed? |
| Kristi31 wrote: | | Any extra point for eating raw?! |
Kim, just go down the list, and add up your points. You have to comply with the Allowed list to even play that day, and you will get a point just for compliance, plus, you get to go down that list for extra points. Just go through the rubric at the bottom of the OP and add up your points. Salt is not on the rubric, and, Kristelle, eating raw isn't either, but I can always change that. I wanted to keep it simple, so no more than five things to check. But, earlier, I was thinking about adding raw animal &/or egg to the rubric.
What do y'all think? Should we give extra points for gettin' some real nutrients?
| Tracy wrote: | | what should I count coconut milk as, veg or VLC "dairy"? Or condiment, since I use it in tea? Hmm. |
Coconut oil is nut oil, and coconut milk is nuts. You can say that again! Either way, both are included, but if you do without 'em, you will get a point for "no vegetables, nuts, oil".
| Tracy wrote: | | Another question - berries, count as VLC veg? :) |
Berries aren't vegetables , and are pretty sweet. They bred them to be that way, ya know. Eat some of that rubbish, and you can sit in your cell that day. And, even mention cocoa, and we'll send ya upstairs.
| Tracy wrote: | I will comply with whatever you say. I aspire to total obedience. |
That's what they had me repeating over and over the other day, up in Suite ZZ-8. I gotta go visit that place more often!
|
Erasmus
|
Hmmmm.....
I vote No change in points but a 100% raw day is 5 point day as long as you are "on the list". If it's pasteurized it's not raw.
-E
|
Dean
|
Say what? Are you talkin' raw rubbish?!
E, the idea behind this is to allow folks a gradual change to a more and more carnivore eating regimen. So, just gettin' in a bit of raw animal/eggs now and then will help one get used to it.
I think I'm gonna change it. I had sorta promised Kristelle I'd include her April Challenge in here. Yes, and raw is not pasteurized, of course.
Let's let Kristelle decide. She opened another April wing.
I personally know the extra nutrients that raw eggs and animals provide are gonna help me a lot. I think we should all be doin' this on a regular basis.
I wanna keep this thing simple, so just 5 items in the check list.
Kristelle, what do you think? Should we do raw?
|
Erasmus
|
Where does a bleu steak fall? It is raw in the middle, edging its way to full on raw. Hmm???
|
Dean
|
E, the rubric will say some raw animal. So, if you barely singe the outside of a steak, and then eat it, and the inside is totally raw, you are eating some raw animal. This is designed to take us on baby steps to places we've never gone before. It's fun!
|
Billi-Jean

Oh goodie! That means I get to say I'm eating raw!
...and the Ketones chant...
"I eat raw, grrr, I'm a carnivore, grr...!!"
Seriously though, I'm glad you allowed for a quick sear of the outside, as I have to live on supermarket meat/eggs at the moment and I'm too nervous to not singe the outside of the meat...but I do buy the thickest steaks (often nearly 2" thick) so they are 99% raw when they come out of the pan, and even still cold in the middle! Bear was so right, I never thought I'd come to love raw meat but it seems to have happened without my even realising it!
|
Dean
|
Yah, we need this raw thing, if nothin' more than just to give us more opportunities for points. The no dairy deal is gonna be a challenge in and of itself. At least for me. Damn, those Wisconsinites must have spiked the water supply! I'm drinkin' cream like it was Kool-Aid or somethin'!

-E |
okay, I'll bite the bullet and shoot for the whole 150
I plan to eat only:
-barely singed meat (ie: raw! ). I'm utterly enamoured with beef at the moment so I may do an all beef month.
-just a small sprinkle of salt (trying to cut it out altogether)
-water
-black coffee (maybe -I'm undecided yet but ideally I'd like to go without it )
...oh, and for extra fat, I slather the beef in melted goose fat! Yum!
|
Tracy
|
Dean, I promise I will not mention cocoa.
Coconut milk is firmly entrenched in the nut/oil category, and will be reported accordingly. E, my CM has zero fibre!
No berries :)
Liking the "some raw" deal - I always eat my steak bleu, and want to get more raw eggs in my diet. Sometimes I crave them. Last night I was watching Iron Chef America, and the hunks of raw wild boar meat looked soooooo good, for some reason.
Assuming raw dairy would count in that tally? Not that I can find much of it, but this might just inspire me. Wonder if raw cheese would affect me differently than un-raw cheese. Don't know if the whole casein-denaturing/pasteurization thing matters, but I'd rather eat raw cheese anyway. Anyone ever notice a difference, like in bloating or GI issues?
Bugger, I need a cow.
|
Kim

I'm going to shoot for at least 120. I can eat my steaks pretty rare but I don't know if I will be able to count them as raw. I do have access to raw cheese though.

Guys. raw animal = raw meat. Since some people don't consider fish and fowl meat, I didn't wanna use that term, and then there are organs and fat along with the flesh. So animal is the whole deal. Like the first Allowed item: "any part of any animal".
NO cow pus is involved here!

I'm new to this board so can you please clarify how this contest works? How do we submit our points each day? Do we post our menus? What would be considered "VLC dairy" and "VLC vegetables"?
I think I could do this quite easily as I've been eating this way since the beginning of January. I would have to take my birthday (April 14) off though and lose my points for that day. I'm planning to make an evil low carb Chocolate Truffle Torte for the occasion. Or, are birthdays considered "free days"??? Maybe I could bribe the judges by sharing the torte with them. We can all wash it down with some Kool-Aid.
|
Dean
|
to the Bus, LindaSue!
The Boot Babes are not beyond a bribe.
As far as this Contest goes, just read the OP (opening post) for the rules, and the rest of the thread if you'd like.
VLC means low, low, low. Practically none, basically.
Rubbish is for rabbits, but some of the carnivore cats on the Bus are still tumbling down the White Rabbit Hole after taking the red pill, so they still like to nibble a bit on the stuff.
Here. You're in the wing.

This is why I posted the defining terms thread.
I vote that as long as you are VLC for the day (<=20g) , that your "rubbish" of choice is VLC.
-E

Dean

So, E, in the rules in the OP, you basically want me to change this:
>>> To get any points you MUST eat only what's Allowed. <<<
If you had something not allowed you are out for the day, you get zero points.
To this:
>>> To get any points you MUST eat only what's Allowed and remain under 20g carbs. <<<
If you had something not allowed or went over 20g carbs you are out for the day, you get zero points.
Should we also change this:
* VLC vegetables, nuts
To this:
* VLC vegetation
And this:
- no vegetables + no nuts + no oil
To:
- no vegetation + no oil
Gettin' pretty strict in here. But, that's how them Boot Babes like it!

Hi all!
I'm new to the bus, and would like to join your April challenge. I started low-carbing on January 7th, but can't seem to get my body to lose weight. I previously lost 55 lbs. on WW, but wasn't losing any more weight for over a year. Then I read Gary Taubes' GCBC and decided LC was a healthier lifestyle. I'm not just in this to lose the rest of my weight (another 50 lbs.), but to be healthier. For almost two months I've been well under 20 carbs daily and have steadily been eliminating foods like LC veggies and fruits, most dairy, etc. trying to get my body to lose fat. My thyroid test came back normal. I think this should be a good way to see if I can finally kick it into weight loss mode.
Question...does AS stand for artificial sweetener?
I look forward to getting to know all of you.

Hi,
I am in! I am back on track after testing the waters outside the bus for a little while. The good news is that the trips off the bus have become less enticing and satisfying. I realize that I am getting more and more comfortable with a carnivore lifestyle. I still have a ways to go but I plan to get there some day. I am not aiming for a perfect 150 but I would like to be over 100 by the end of the month.

Hey, Valcan,
So glad you have joined us in this wing of the Ward.
Yah, this wing is designed to help people find out what they can and can't give up in their pursuit of a more natural and healthy diet, based on what we evolved on. If you can go all the way with this thing, you're lucky. It's not really about that, though. I mean it can be, if that's your thing. But, it's really more about focusing on something harder, so we'll get our minds off what we're "giving up" in our diet, and instead see what we're "adding to" our natural diet. I can begin to really appreciate how just a cup of coffee can be seen as a treat, and how I don't need to eat ice cream or pie for that mental fix. When I am focused on keeping veggies out of my diet, I'm not thinking about donuts. Haven't thought about those in months. If "slipping up" is eating some almonds or drinking some cream or eating a tomato, then we're doing pretty damn good, now aren't we?!

Great comment Dean! You just hit the nail on the head. This puts it all into perspective for me. Thanks!

Dean, if I have my coffee and heavy cream in the morning, but ONLY meats/eggs and water the rest of the time, would this still be ok for the contest?
If I have no loss after a week or two, then I guess I'll have to cut out the cream, then the coffee. I can't even imagine the sadness of that day! I've been married for a little over half my life (and I'm only 34), but I've been drinking coffee longer than that!
This will be interesting. You know, I've never given up cheese and nuts. Kristelle really got me thinking yesterday about calories vs. exactly *what* we're eating. I guess I had been doing traditional atkins-style low carb for so long that I usually think "Extra swiss and provolone, sure!"
|
Kristelle
|
I gave up cigarettes, then coffee, then gluten, then all non-paleo things, then veggies, then all carbs, then cooking. One step at a time, slowly, slowly.
If I can do it, you can do it too. Take baby steps and give yourself a tap on the back every day that you conquer your addictions to improve your health and general well-being. You will only feel prouder of yourself and stronger inside. The consequences can only be positive ones.

That's how I did it, and am still doing it. One step at a time. My situation mirrors Kristelle's. I hope it keeps mirroring it. She is my inspiration to keep going, that's for sure.
Shae, yes, what you describe would get you 4 points, providing you had some raw egg or meat, otherwise 3 points each day. Check out the OP for the rules, and please post any questions you have. Hopefully they are simple enough for everyone to understand. Would love to know if they are. Let me know if they are.
Thanks, Shae.

count me out, not because your challenge is not good for me, its I think I need to do something different, more suitable to the stage I am at, may be one day I will turn into the macho carnivore you all aspire to

Hey, we have special robes for that, ya know!

Badger

Nobody told me about the special robes! I want a special robe!!

Badger, the carnivore council is still carefully considering your compliance with the carnivore commandments. Once they've concluded this critical conference of your case, you'll be contacted about your confirmation. Cool?

Carnivore Council I'm familiar with the Bus Boot Babes, but now there's some secret cabal keeping me from my robes
This just won't do. Down with the Carnviore Council and all of their shady acts. They must share the meat, share the robes.
Share the Meat! Share the Robes!!
Share the Meat! Share the Robes!!
Share the Meat! Share the Robes!!

If you have any questions on how to total your daily numbers up, or any other constructive questions, please post 'em.
It's too late to get in or out of the wing. The Boot Babes have sealed the door, and have declared this Contest is on.
Good luck to the teams, and let's try to have some fun, shall we?
