Dave's Magic Bus ride of irreverent Carb splattery!Hey all!
Hey guys! I wasn't sure if I wanted to start yet another journal. How many forums am I on?
Hey if I wasn't on forums during work hours - I would have to do some actual work - dammit!
25th of July 2005 I successfully started non-stop Atkins after 4-5 years of 'trying'. My start weight was in excess of 473 pounds (215 kilos). In fact it was porbably closer to 500 pounds. In Australia scales that go up that far, are few are far between. I know I was over 215 kilos, because previously in Jan that year I rejoined Weight Watchers for the millionth time, go on the scale. The lady said - sorry our scale only goes up to 215 kilos, but I rekon you are just over it, loose some weight and come back next week. So I did and I weighed 213 kilos. Well of course I never went back because I was always starving.
It was 4-5 months before I found a scale to weight myself to see the progress.
I've pretty much been lowish carbs all the time. It's gone over a year and I've managed to lose 130 pounds without exercise of calorie counting.
Now I am experiencing what everyone else does, and having watch that I don't overeat (calorie excess) and trying to exercise (much easier now).
Look, I've always been fat from age of 7 - so I have a lot of issues with people's intolerance to the overweight. Picture a picked-on little child that suddenly has a 343 pound 6foot3 inch body. he he I don't take shit from anyone in the real world (only online). But I'm like one of those gentle giant guys.
I've always had negative self esteem, and that doesn't matter whether you are 20 pounds overweight or 200 pounds. I still felt that same negative self esteem. Just as I loose weight I have more fun, and feel more hope.
I have a fiancee who I love, and I'm looking to marry when I get slim enough. First I conquer the weight. We have been together for 7 years. She's 5 foot 11 slim and blonde.
So when we would go out when I was 473 pounds, without fail the ticket booth people would always ask "Are you two together?"
Well I'm glad to say that has sort of stopped.
Now I just look like one of those fat bouncers. In fact I kinda feel funny when I go to a club and I am bigger than the bouncer. Mostly fat - and I'm totally unfit - but I can do good sumo because I have short legs !
Wow what a ramble!

Great to hear about you, how old are you if you don't mind me asking? Nevermind, I see it, slightly younger than I am.

Sadly I am at the old age of 30

I like your new pic - you look GREAT! Thank you for your story...I agree that being overweight is tough on the old self esteem, no matter how overweight I am (or not). I am very intolerant of people who treat me differently as I get smaller - I'm still the same damn person, just smaller!
And, welcome to da Bus!!!!!!!!!!!

Dave,
It is SO GOOD to have you here!
I was really beginning to miss your posts.
You are one funny guy!
Thanks for gettin' on the bus!

glad your here..your an inspiration!

Hey everyone - Thanks for welcome!
You know most class clowns use humour to divert their attention from their own personal hardships!
LOL - it's just so hard to take things seriously sometimes!
Sometimes when I'm out there in community groups or whatever, I wish I was more serious - but I usually end up taking the piss!
|
Dave

I just had a shave too.
Damn beard was disgusting!
|
Jessica
|
Dave, is there a name for how you have your facial hair shaved? I noticed a lot of guys at work have that look. It's very nice on you!
I don't think a sense of humor is a bad thing... most people I know are lacking in it (but I work in engineering, too).

I think it's just called a goatee beard.
I'm clean chaven now
|
Karen
|
Yep..it is called a goatee!!
So Dave are you a total carnivore now..or are you still doing atkins induction for the most part? do you eat nuts, fruit?? just curious about everyone's woe's. You lost the majority of your weight on induction am i correct?? I am kinda lost right now. In 2003 i did atkins for a year and lost 81 lbs, then found out i was pregnant. So i went through the pregnancy and breastfeeding and all that and finally got back around to doing something in Feb of this year. I went back on atkins and stuck with if for about 3 and a half mos without a single cheat..then i started tweaking and tweaking and have been having a hard time since. I have lost about 40 lbs since Feb..but the last few months its pretty much losing and gaining and losing and gaining the SAME 12 lbs. lol. Right now i am TRYING to do paleo..but not too successfully..though i did lose 3 lbs this week!! i am considering going back to atkins but hubby is paleo now after losing 120 lbs..hes a few lbs from his goal weight and rides his bike 20 miles a day and eats about 10 pcs of fruit and a cup or more of nuts each day..lol...(and some meat and veg)..OOOPS..this is NOT MY journal..its yours..forgot there for a sec.. sorry for all the rambling..i forgot my point..lol
|
Jessica
|
Ahhh... thanks for the info... I thought a goatee was just the stuff on the chin...
Jessica

Dave
|
Karen, if truth be told, I've lost most of my weight on OWL.
But it's been as low carb as I can get.
Sometimes I have strawberries and some nuts.
I have to stay away from bars! They stall me - but candy is tastey.
I don't see much difference in Paleo, and atkins, just that atkins restricts the carb foods until you lose the wieght, then atkins maintenance is pretty much paleo.
I tried meat and egg for two weeks - but I had some sleep issues going on, and I think that screwed around my system - thus interfering with my no carb.
Personally I prefer low carb. A lot tastier!
|
Dave

Alright peeps,
I won't be around for a week and a half, because I'm flying to Cairns to visit my family.
So don't think I'm ignoring the board!

Well today I've done something I've wanted to for a long time. I went 100% carnivore. I didn't even eat eggs.
I'm staying off eggs for now - I think I may have an intolerance issue.
No processed meats, no cured meats - meat straight from the butcher.
Let's see how long this experiment lasts!
|
jeff
|
Dave, I think you'll like how it makes you feel. I suspect you'll see good weight loss as well. Please keep us posted.
|
Steve
|
Dave,
You may be right about the food issue. I used to work in a cancer clinic and they would test their patients for food allergies.
What they found was quite remarkable. Those who ate basically the same thing daily, such as eggs, developed an allergy to eggs.
When they had these people rotate out their protein sources they could slowly reintroduce allergenic foods back into their diet.
Makes sense. We all know that you can live on meat alone, but would it benefit us to rotate protein and other food sources?
They even had them rotate their fish choices.
they had them "exchange" these foods over the course of 3 days ex.
day 1
Eggs,chicken, Beef
Day 2
turkey,Salmon,shellfish
Day 3
Cod,pork,protein powder.
and so on..
though I'm not quite sure how much levity this has, but they also said that this rotating gives one a better ratio of amino acids and a better "mix" of proteins.
There are times where I believe in the benefits on a mono diet, but can a variety of food makes us healthier?
|
Dave
|
Interesting idea Steve!
That's for the encouragement Jeff!
This morning I felt fantastic! I slept really well.
Can't wait to see how I go.
|
Susanne
|
I'm excited for you, Dave! Though I'm not doing pure carnivore at the moment, I sure like how GOOD I felt on it!
|
Dave
|
Thanks Susanne,
I am on day 3.
It seems that it takes this long for things to really kick in. I'm losing more water.
And I feel the pangs of diahrea coming on, which signals the initial candida die-off.
I really think that candida has been badly affecting me - mood wise, cravings wise.
I know that this zero carb, no eggs or dairy, is really extreme, but I want to see how far I get.
|
Steve
|
Dave, let us know what you are eating for your planned meals..
time and what was eaten at each meal.
|
Dave
|
Breakfast:-
1/2 a rump steak seared in coconut oil (approx 7:45am)
Lunch - 4 big fat Pork rashers
fried in coconut oil (approx 12:40pm)
I'm at work - so I prolly won't eat until after 6pm.
|
Dean
|
Dave,
I'm so glad you are trying out the carnivore WOE! You will probably do really well on it. I started out just experimenting with it... and eliminating every other type of food I had around, until one day, I looked in my fridge and there was only meat and eggs in there!
At the very least, you will be able to get your body functioning at it's peak. After going a long time eating only meat, you will find that the slip ups don't affect you as bad. I believe that it is because our intestines do best with only meat (raw would be the absolute best). I believe our whole system does best on that type of diet. So, what happens is we are starting to heal ourselves when we go on an "all meat fast"... sort of like an elimination diet. So, even if you return to eating other foods, you will at least be taking steps to heal yourself a little.
Good luck, and keep us posted on your progress.

Dave...VERY interesting blog. I totally agree with you that doctors really don't do a lot to help our health and in fact do a LOT to damage it.
I took that 'intelligence' test. What's scary is that I appear to be the exactly same kind of thinker you are. Wait...that's not scary. I'd say that puts us at the top of the 'food' chain...literally.

I just posted something along these lines in Bawdy's journal. I don't trust doctor's and especially prescriptions and the drug companies. My mom and grandma are both nurses and I grew up on antibiotics. I don't know if that anything to do with my current health, but I just remember their thoughts of doctors and drugs being so wonderful.....

Thanks gals!
For the last two weeks I've been off my zero carb experiment.
I think the issue is that I listen too much to fools.
There are a lot of fools out there on various low carb boards. Except for this one, the zero cab one, and my own forum AusLowCarb.com.
http://www.auslowcarb.com/
I've busy supported fellow Aussies, and having them support me.
Even though I don't come around Magic Bus very often, I like the small respectful community that it is.
Zero carber forum can get flamey.
ALC - are just mainly jerks and a lot of South Beach people running down Dr Atkins and telling everyone that they are idiots if they are calorie couting.
ADBB - well Hmmm...... They have issues. Often times my posts get ignored there, but I think it's because I am male.
Every female thinks because I'm male I want to get in their pants. Okay maybe we do, but youknow if we are in committed relationships - we stop ourselves! LOL That's the truth about guys, they will look at a lot of women and somtimes think about sex. But they have good hearts and decided to honour their relationship vows - and some choose not to.
Okay - this is rambling. But the point is not every guy is a cheater.
|
Suzanne
|
Dave, quit listening to fools. And the women on the bus are ok with the idea you want in our pants! We consider it a compliment! Not that you ever even flirt with us, darn it all.
Gee, we all know you have a girl. I don't know what the ADBB board is but it sounds like they need to get over it.
Have a good day and just stop by when you can. We always keep a seat for you!
|
Susanne
|
I want to know what the ADBB is too so I can go lurk there and see what they are up to.
Thanks for the compliments on the board, Dave...we've worked hard to make it a friendly, nice place.
And I'm with Suzanne...you could flirt with us just a teeny bit. We know you have a nice lady in your life, so nobody will be flying to Australia to bug you. Unless you want us too....

Hi Dave, nice to hear from you again, your insights and honest opinions are very refreshing. You're right about the various boards and I don't go anywhere but here (because everyone is so supportive), your blog, Dr. Eades, Regina Wiltshire's and Jimmy Moore's blogs. Sometimes I visit Anthony Colpo's but it's too exercise-centric for me.

Dave, I meant to ask you two things:
*What fruits do you eat (if any)?
*Did you follow the Atkins carb rungs?

Active Low carbers banned me for putting my 'commercial' home page in my signature. I can just see all those people from the northern hemisphere inviting me to come and mind their pets, clean their houses or do the gardening! It's not as if I was trying to make money from low carb, inlike some people on their site. They have been deleted from my computer. The only bit I miss is the research threads.
Much more fun and much nicer folk here.

Yes Dave stop in more often, let us know how your no carb is going. It took me 14 days to really feel great after starting no carb, I was really hungry and continued cravings until then. Hang in there, the difference was worth it for me.

I think the maximum I went was like 13 days zero carb.
So far it's alright. I wanted a big salad today, but I veered away.
I'm realising that is just a 'craving' and it's not hunger.

|
Dave

Okay since we are talking dreams.
When I was a fat, insluin resistant 12 year old, I would get very hungry at school.
But, the only knowledge of weight control given to me was that of calories restriction.
One day I day-dreamed of a giant meat pie coming from the sky to fulfill my hunger. And a water foundation that produced lemonade, rather than water.
Thinking back now, I see how crap my nutition was!
|
Dean

A pot of pie and a lemonade fountain coming out of the sky! Sounds like a trippy Beatles song or something.
Were you into Kool-Aid back then, Dave?

|
Dave
|
Thanks Jessica,
At the moment, I must be honest that I am eating more like Atkins OWL phase. And stalling in wieght loss of course.
My motivation has taken a nose-dive, dealing with depressions and other things in life.
It's funny how the emotional issues that come with obesity (and other things) can bring you to your knees at times.
|
Dave
|
My confession.
I've been having a rough time. Bouts of cheating and junk food.
I think there are many factors:-
Psycological issues from being obese all my life.
The incessant push for calorie counting on many websites (It just doesn't help my resolve)
Eating too many carbs even on a low carb diet (I am very sensitive to the least amount of carbs)
Society
Work changes
I have the resolve in me to commit.
I want to commit to The Bear's Zero Carb path.
It's the only one that makes sense to me.
I just have to make an effort.
Take my life seriously!
