Dean's Long Strange Magic Bus Trip
We're BAAAAAAAAAACCCCCKKKKK!!!!!!!!
OK... I'll start a journal in here.
I'm 6'0" and have a medium/average build. I should weigh about 170 lbs (if I have good muscle tone, which I want... otherwise 160 or so). My goal has been to get down to 170 lbs with 12% body fat. That is just the first goal. Once I get there, I plan to tweak things as I tone up more and more, and build more muscle. I am currently at 184.2 with 19.1% body fat. That is 14.8 lbs of body fat to lose to reach goal.
My weight has never even hit 205 lbs... and that was even when I spent a whole month going on a HUGE refined sugar binge prior to "starting over" and "getting clean". I think it would take me several years for my weight to climb above 200 lbs on a consistent basis. And, I would have to resort to eating lots of pizza and pasta and such... or I should say overeating this food on a regular basis... something I have never done before. Therefore, eating SAD, my weight stayed around 195 lbs on average. When I quit smoking five years ago, I was concerned that my appetite might get the better of me. I was also wanting to improve my health further. So, I started looking into better ways of eating.
Four years ago I left the HC/LF WOE behind. It was a total joke! At that time, I was exposed to LC, but also "paleo" WOE. I wanted to try paleo, because it seemed to make more sense. When I was strict with the diet, I found that I could eat without counting calories or carbs. I did gradually lose body fat, but never stuck with the diet long enough to see how low I could go with body fat. At times, being inpatient perhaps, I would cut as many carbs out as I could, and therefore ate carnivorously, and would see my body fat go down quicker... once as low as 13.6%. However, if I had just been patient and continued eating "paleo" (fruits and veggies included), who knows what would have happened? I did get down to around 16-17% fairly often eating "paleo"... but, as I said, would go off this WOE and curtail my progress.
On January 1, 2004, I began strict "paleo" and went from 34.8 lbs of body fat to lose (to reach my goal)... down to 8.9 lbs of body fat to lose, by mid-April. That is 25.9 lbs of body fat lost in 16 weeks... 1.6 lbs per week (a nice, steady loss). Of course I abandoned this WOE, and then stopped losing. Who knows where I would have ended up if I had stuck to this WOE?
Calories do come into play. I have lost weight by eating all kinds of different ways, when paying close attention to calories. That is NOT something I have ever wanted to do, however. I HATE FitDay. I also did not want to start counting carbs either, and that may be part of the appeal to eating "paleo" that I had. Fruits and veggies don't have many calories. So, it is no wonder that while eating lean game meat, fruits and veggies, some nuts and seeds, and NO dairy (with it's high calories), I lost weight and body fat easily and steadily. But, how nutritious were those calories?
One thing I can say about carnivorous eating is the appetite suppression is great! However, eating too much fat stalls me big time... once for seven whole months! So, yes... I have been having trouble losing body fat when eating gobs of fat! I don't know if it is related to excess calories, dairy "bloating" issues, or just exactly what. For a long time earlier this year the scale was moving in the wrong direction. I was getting down in the high 180s for a spell, and had my body fat under 20%... then, I upped my fat even more thinking I would lose weight quicker... and this is what happened!
Date Weight BodyFat Fat2Lose
05/07/06 192.2 23.6% 25.0
05/14/06 197.2 22.7% 24.4
05/21/06 197.8 22.2% 23.5
While I did lose 1.5 lbs of body fat... it took me THREE WEEKS to do it! That is simply unacceptable to me. Sorry.
I have been tracking my weight and body fat (every Sunday) since 09/15/02.
Once, when eating no dairy, and totally carnivorously for a month, I had these results.
Date Weight BodyFat Fat2Lose
06/29/03 182.0 17.6% 11.6
07/06/03 179.2 17.2% 10.4
07/13/03 176.4 17.2% 9.9
07/20/03 175.6 16.1% 7.9
07/27/03 172.6 13.6% 3.1
Now this I would LOVE to see again!
All in all, I have found, if I give it time, eating only animal food is very easy to do... and the way I look and feel is wonderful.
I just KNOW carnivore is the best WOE for me!

First...I love the bus.
Second...it sounds as though you know what you have to do to lose what you want to lose.
Third...you know that you have to stick to one routine which has been successful for you.
You look good in your pics and your body fat is low. I think that you should just keep doing what you're doing!
|
Dean

Thanks, Bobi! You're the best bus buddy anybody could have!
Let's get this bus loaded up with

Gotta scramble to get these smilies configured!
And, Suzanne... you can tie me up anytime!
|
Suzanne

Great job, Dean! You're doing so well! I know it's hard, but in the end it's SO worth it. I bet you feel great as well!
Now, where's the exercise?

Dean said I can be in charge of the nudie pic forum, so I hearby declare that partial nudity is perfectly acceptable for those who are not quite comfortable with letting it all hang out. Looking foward to seeing "all" of you real soon.

I roasted three small chickens in my large roasting pan last night.
I put some good curry/chili powder spices on these. I never use any oil to cook chicken or turkey... just let 'em cook in their own fat. I only want to consume animal food, except some coconut oil/milk and perhaps a small amount of berries. But, lately I have just been eating meat!

However, Jessica your husband's excuse is at least valid.

Dean, I was thinking of something tonight, it takes me about 2 weeks of doing some form of exercise every day until I actually WANT to workout, and actually look forward to working out. I don't know why, it's weird. It's like I have to go through the motions for a couple of weeks, then boom, it's like automatic.
I don't know if that helps, but just wanted to pass it along.
Take care, (((((((hugs))))))) Jessica

Dean

Jessica,
Thanks for this suggestion. I know what you mean. I work hard to keep myself exercising on a consistent schedule, and pretty soon I fall into a groove and it is no big deal. BUT... if I ever let myself come up with some stupid excuse to NOT exercise, then I am done for... cuz, the next day I come up with another excuse... and pretty soon frickin' weeks have gone by! I hate that! One thing I use to get back on it, is to go for nice long walks in the park... an activity I love. However, this heat has prohibited that for such a long time. I know I should just jump on my treadmill... I really have no excuse here. Just fishing for one.
Hey, at least I have stuck with my eating plan for a long time. Two weeks without any booze... and 3 1/2 weeks with NO junk food! Doesn't that count for somethin'?! I would mention lots of ESC... but, Suzanne is just leading me on, I'm afraid... so, two weeks of that might be asking a bit much.

Dean, regarding exercise, here is a quote from Dr. Michael Eades off his website:
| Quote: | I've said at least a thousand times in talks, books and probably even in this blog that I believe that exercise is NOT a particularly good way to lose weight. Exercise has many health benefits; weight loss just doesn't happen to be one of them.
I became involved with Slow Burn, and MD and I and Fred Hahn wrote the book not because we thought Slow Burn would help people lose weight, but we thought it was the best way to gain strength and flexibility.
In our practice we never advocate that patients exercise to kick off their low-carb weight loss program; we always tell them not to worry about exercise at first, and that in time, as they lose weight and start to feel better, they will start to exercise on their own | .
So relax Dean and enjoy those simple exercises that you enjoy doing as opposed to all those strenous ones you think you should be doing or other people tell you, you should be doing Even rummaging about in toy boxes has many health benefits.
