February Carnivore ContestFebruary Carnivore Contest
Allowed
* any part of any animal (including processed meat)
* eggs
* VLC dairy
* VLC condiments, seasoning
* water, tea, coffee
Disallowed
* no vegetation (except condiments, seasoning)
* no vegetable oils, mayo, salsa, bbq sauce, etc.
* no half & half
* no coconut oil/milk
* no artificial sweeteners
* no alcohol
Processed meats are fine, like bacon, pepperoni, ham, and the like. The cleaner you can keep it, the better it will be, but, for this contest, it's just about getting away from eating non-animal foods, like vegetation, and to remove as many carbs as possible. That seems to be hard enough for people to do, so this is primarily a mental challenge, and a switch to a different way of thinking about food. All the animal fat is going to be curative as well. There's room for people to do this in a variety of ways, but the main emphasis is on carnivorous eating, not really counting any calories or macro ratios or such. Of course, feel free to do so if you feel you must.
We can all keep track in this thread of how many days we can stick to this WOE. So, if you slip up one day, you are still in the contest. Just get right back on the Bus.
So, who's down for this contest? And, are there any suggestions for any modifications to this?

But, but, but...have you ever TASTED Artisana Coconut Butter? LOL
And since I just gave up 1) coffee 2) cocoa 3) artificial sweeteners, I really don't know if I can mentally ditch the coconut. I use it to get me through hunger pains and afternoon groggies.
Hummmmmm....what else could I use without boosting my protein intake?

I'm in but I may start before February, like maybe this week. I have been off the wagon too long. From about December 22 through today, I have only been on for about a week. Fortunately, even though I have been eating so much crap, I only gained 2.7 pounds since 12/22.

Will...it isn't Feb yet. Still have time to think about it :D

You've described how I already eat. Except I don't eat processed meats or dairy (aside from ghee) and rarely do I eat seasonings. The absolute only thing on that list that I currently have that isn't allowed is the alcohol (I have a drink or two about once a week, maybe on a saturday).

What alcohol do you drink and how do you drink it? I'm just wondering because I really enjoy rum and diet coke but I really want to avoid sweeteners, I'm just looking for ideas.....

I am already eating this way now, minus the dairy.

I like vodka with club soda or a single malt Scotch, neat. Once every few months, I have some wine, although I only really tolerate it in the summer. In the winter, it just makes my skin break out in a rash.

My challenge runs through February, also, and it has a big overlap with this one. It would be possible to do both, if one cut out everything that's allowed on only one but not the other.
Anyone who wants to join is welcome!
Here are the differences:
Dean's allows cured/processed meats.
Mine requires eating as much as one wants of whatever (included foods) one wants, regardless of macro ratios or total calories.
Mine prohibits anything with "natural" or artificial flavors listed on the ingredients label.
Mine allows salad vegetables.
Mine allows some non-animal fat (coconut, olive, and anything not terrifically industrialized).
Mine includes small amounts of tomatoes, onions and celery as seasonings for the purposes of cooking. (As in, a 15-oz can of tomatoes and an onion would be OK to cook a three- or four-pound pot roast with.)
|
Dean

This is sort of an Experiment, in a way. I want to tally up how many total days we on the Bus eat carnivorously. I also want to spend 29 days getting free of carbs and any non-animal foods, which is my goal in changing my WOE to total carnivore eating.
So, Heather and Red, you can certainly add days to this Contest/Experiment... the days when you don't drink any booze, I guess.
Just wanna see how carnivorous this crew is.

On second thought, it's of paramount importance to keep purposes unmuddied in these experiments and challenges and contests.
My unrestricted calories VLC experiment has one purpose: to see whether accumulated body fat will be shed. This conest/experiment has another: to see how many days Bus riders eat carnivorously.
It's so much more than "I'm using tomatoes and Dean's not; Dean's using bacon and I'm not." Yes, it's possible eat in the Venn Diagram intersection of the two February events, But to what end?
Well, Dean, it's a worthy goal! For the purposes of your tally: The most figure for the greatest number of days in a row I might possibly be eating carnivorously in February would be two: the weekend days when I'm least likely to eat salad. However, those are the days I'm most likely to add tomatoes and onions and celery to pot roast. And I'm using my homemade mayo nearly every day. So zero is the more likely figure.
Good luck!

i may do some carnivore days/weeks. i'll have to keep the coconut oil though, since it's part of my candida prescription. i've been eating like you, vesna, on most days. had a mishap last night that made me feel completely crappy: i stopped at the store and bought a controlled carb yogurt, 6 oz cup. i was driving and started to feel totally crappy all of a sudden. i thought it felt an awful lot like sugar buzz. sure enough, when i stopped at a rest area, i read the container, turned out it was a sugar variety. i didn't check to make sure when i grabbed it. just took it from amoung the sugarless. someone must've put it back in the wrong place. i never eat this stuff and have not had commercial yogurt in years. that'll teach me. i was lying in bed and feeling like i was drowning in all the stuff i have going and would never make it out alive. i had to remind myself that i was crashing! this was beyond a horrible experience.

If I start my days before Feb 1, can I count those too? Are we supposed to post what we eat to keep us honest or is it the honor system?

I struggled with what food to put on this Contest (Challenge). The slippery slope occurs pretty quick, doesn't it? So, I decided that if I included coconut, alcohol, tomatoes... then, pretty soon it would be Atkins bars and Carbquik and all the other artificial junk. I figured, if there is artificial junk, let it at least be in processed meat, like brats, bacon, ham, and the like, since many people seem to eat these things. I have always steered clear of them, until last November, when I was desperate to get off the junk food, and wanted to find a way to get back to carnivore eating. I thought perhaps others might need that stepping stone as well. I personally will move away from cheese and processed meat eventually, but am more concerned right now with just getting into eating meat/eggs/dairy (animal food) exclusively, especially high animal fat.
So, ya'll tell me what you think should be included, besides what is listed. I listed coffee, cuz it seems like 99% of people drink it. I also listed the processed meat and cheese, cuz it seems that many use it to some extent, and for the reasons I just mentioned. I also included spices, sauces, seasonings, cuz I know first hand how hard it is to avoid those. Primarily, though, I was trying to keep it to just animal food. If someone wants to go extreme and do as I did last April, by all means, that's a very cleansing deal, but, for many of us, I think this is a good way to just get back to VLC/ZC Carnivore WOE, now that the holidaze are over.
As far as keeping track. We can just do something like this:

Kim,
Just count the days in February. You don't have to post what you eat, just update the number of days for each day you stick to eating only what is on the list. Not sure at this point if anything more will be added to that list, but we'll just have to wait and see. I too am starting to eat this way as well, and have been for the last three months, with very few slip ups. I am looking forward to ditching the coconut milk, the berries, the wine, and the half & half for the month of February. I think, if I limit cheese and processed meats a bit, I will really lose this fat I've wanted to lose. Taking things closer to zero carb will help as well, I'm sure. Glad to see you in this Contest.

Vesna,
It doesn't have to be "days in a row". One could eat this way every other day, and rack up 15 days during the month. This will allow for slip ups. Of course, I'm shootin' for 29 days on my tally.

I have some medical tests on the 11th and need to eat wheat until then (one of the tests will check for wheat/gluten sensitivity and if I don't eat wheat prior to the test it won't be accurate). After that I am back baby! The wheat gives me heartburn (as much as I like it) and the carbs don't do my blood sugar any favors. I do want to get the gluten issue resolved one way or the other and they are doing other tests at the same time, so while they are in the neighborhood.....
I'll be wanting to go carnivore for 2 weeks and then start adding in foods until I see what makes me stall, so how about I join you after my tests and we can overlap experiments?

first of all; alcohol, tomatoes and coconut oil have never, ever made me want to eat carbquick or atkins bars. i have never been into lc junk food and when i ate an atkins bar it tasted like feet. second, dean, i think the list is good but i'd like to see coconut oil on it. after all it is a saturated fat. feb is good. freezing ass cold....carnivore is a good way to stay warm. so glad you included hot sauce.

Well, if nobody objects we can add coconut oil/butter. That'd be fine by me. How 'bout everyone else? I'm through with it, but it's probably not really bad or anything. I'm just wanting to go as close to total carnivore as possible.

I think a carnivore event needs to be a carnivore event. The first set of guidelines that you started the thread with makes perfect sense. Salt and pepper -- that's one thing. But adding vegetable matter with macronutrient content makes it no longer a an animal foods contest. It transforms it into something with no clear center.
I suggest that if people need to make a certain exception, but they want to join the game, the exception could be listed next to their name in the tally. For example, the tally on Feb 8 might read:
Frodo.............5
Bilbo..............8
Gandalf..........8 (plus coconut oil)
Sauron...........1
Galadriel........3
That way we get a picture of who's living on animal food alone, and for what measure of the time. Which is the original conception of the contest.
And nobody has to be left out. Which is in accordance with the spirit of the Bus.

i think that's a good idea, vesna. i wouldn't even be doing CO but i feel that i must follow through w the cycle, which i have not done in the past because it made me feel sick. now that i've adjusted, i will just go for it. would certainly like to be rid of it. i had blood testing which confirmed candida about 1 1/2yr ago and have done parts of the prescription but was just flaky about it. i think i am focusing more on the discomfort in my tummy because it is cold and i am more confined than i've been in a number of years... since i spent them in FL.

Sounds good, but the only trouble is we won't get an accurate tally that way, will we? In the end, it won't be an accurate total of true carnivore eating days, which is what my intentions were when starting this Contest. Those slippery slopes. Fact is, almost nobody eats strict carnivore, for real. Even Bear didn't, since he drank coffee everyday, and used macadamia oil mayo, etc.
My intention in starting this thread was actually more of a Challenge for myself and anyone else that wanted to join in, but still keep it open for slip ups throughout the month. It is more of a way to get away from the perceived need for non-animal foods... to show that it can be done, perhaps. I think the further one gets from the concept of eating plant food, the more they realize what our natural diet should be, and that everything else is just some sorta toxic treat, which is perfectly understandable in wanting some of those.
|
Dean
|
You know, I was thinking of a compromise. How 'bout we go with the original post for those who are so brave, and do the tally based on that. If anyone wants to try, but finds themselves compromising with any "toxic treats", they are welcome to record those treats in a post in this thread, and only if they completely refrain from those treats can they claim a successful carnivore day and add to their tally. That way, anyone can participate, but the tally will actually add up the true carnivore days that Bus members ate that way. It's not really that hard to eat this way anyway, is it jeff? Red? Heather? Tina? Whoever?

Wow, gettin' a big list of participants!
There really is no "start date" to this. Just every day during February that you eat only what is on the OP list, you can tally up another day for yourself (and the TOTAL). If you got close, you can post what you ate off this plan, but not add to the tally. So, those are the ways to participate. Either way, this will get people starting to experiment with eating "total carnivore". I for one have never done it for more than a couple weeks or so. This should be interesting. I'm really looking forward to it.

Yeah AC is a hoot. It's really kind of sad. I think he probably has a lot of good information and ideas. If he could only pull his head out long enough to open a dialog with the OTHER people who also have good information and ideas.
But enough about that soap opera...
I have questions about "the rules".
Not that I plan to use any, but what about stevia? Refined? Leaf only? Of course, who sweetens meat?
Coconut: I get the part about no coconut FOOD, however a limited amount of, say, coconut curry, kind of falls into the VLC sauce category. Mind you, I'm talking about a couple of tablespoons on a steak, not a soup... until March anyway.

I'm thinking the sauces fall into the seasoning category, i.e., NOT a coconut curry as a dish, but perhaps (as said) a curry sauce as a topping, seasoning or marinade, that couple of tablespoons perhaps being a maximum.
As for stevia (and other non-artificial sweeteners), well, that could get very interesting, as weekend-ly my DH and I have a dessert pact, and I can foresee a single serve lemon curd made with a TBSP of lemon juice, a couple of eggs and some non-intensive non-artificial sweeteners...I see those as legal, though not the LC ice cream I specialize in... (I better polish off that vanilla/chocolate swirl in the fridge) ...being an LC professional cook/personal chef has its interesting -- and dangerous -- side.
I can also foresee a few days where I may need to be more social, in a workplace manner of speaking, and ingest a salad with blue cheese dressing or some such; I would definitely knock those days off my Carnivorous February total. Too much vegetation and sauce.
|
Red
|
Personally, I would say no to sweeteners. They really aren't in the spirit of this exercise, you know? Plus, there is a lot of evidence that, although non-caloric, that they stimulate the same hormonal cascade as sugar does. Yes, even stevia.
But then, I'd also say no to seasonings. And CO and coffee. But I'm clearly in the minority there.
Really, this is just turning into what a lot of us already do, in terms of diet. I'm kind of losing the point of it.
|
Dean
|
I think if you have any type of ZC/VLC sauce, and you use it with utmost discretion, fine, it will be like Jude said, a seasoning. Leave it to your judgment. The Red Hot chicken wing sauce and Tabasco sauce both say ZC (that's zero carb and calorie).
| Red wrote: | | Personally, I would say no to sweeteners. They really aren't in the spirit of this exercise, you know? Plus, there is a lot of evidence that, although non-caloric, that they stimulate the same hormonal cascade as sugar does. Yes, even stevia. |
I agree with Red about the stevia. For the reasons she states, they aren't in the spirit of this Contest, nor in the rules (see the OP that says "no artificial sweeteners").
| Red wrote: | But then, I'd also say no to seasonings. And CO and coffee. But I'm clearly in the minority there. |
And that is why I included seasonings and coffee, cuz I know how incredibly difficult it is to eat only plain meat. Did it for 15 days straight last April, just plain beef and pork, and only water to drink. It was way too hard, and talk about a minority position!
| Red wrote: | Really, this is just turning into what a lot of us already do, in terms of diet. I'm kind of losing the point of it. |
We'll see, Red. I have a feeling that this WOE is not all that common. I really hope I'm wrong, and we have a huge TOTAL come March, but we shall see. That's why this is a Contest, a Challenge and an Experiment all rolled up into one.
And, as Jude said, there will be some days you just won't be able to tally up one for yourself (and the group). That's one of the purposes of this thread, to see how many total days we can all eat "modern carnivore", for lack of a better name.
|

i think the list is pretty clear and if we continue to tweak it...well, we might as well quit before we start. i took seasoning to mean salt, pepper, dry rub kind of stuff. if we get into sauces other than pure hot sauce, we might as well add ketchup, mayo, bbq, etc. i'm a stevia user and already decided i would not use it on carnivore days. all the dairy allowed makes this a pretty do-able contest.

jem, these were my thoughts as well.
If you wanna take a look at another similar Challenge, go look at the April Zero Carb Challenge
http://magicbus.myfreeforum.org/about602.html
It ended up with three levels, and in the end I think there was almost no participation.
I wanted this Feb Contest to be one people could actually do, but still have it be meaningful in jump starting VLC eating. It is amazing what getting away from certain foods will do for you. This will allow people to get away from the addictive and crazy foods they normally eat without even thinking about it. If someone wants to be more strict than this, they can. The main thing is, if they go 29 days on this WOE, they will be able to stick to an eating plan they can truly live with after that, no matter what small amount of "toxic treats" it contains. Doing that 15 days of plain beef and pork with water really helped me get further into my WOE. This carnivore contest is gonna help me get free of many things I have been wanting to ditch, like coconut, berries, half & half, etc. I hope it will help others accomplish similar goals.

I'm going to be one of the strict ones (I hope). I do not do coffee so no dairy other than maybe a little cheese, and very few spices on my meat, and maybe some tabasco on eggs if I eat any. I'm ready!

Will...it isn't Feb yet. Still have time to think about it :D |
wifezilla,
You gave me an idea, and yesterday I picked up some sour cream and some pork rinds. I put a bunch of sour cream in a bowl tonight and I shook in a bunch of dashes of Tabasco sauce, stirred it up and used it as a dip for the pork rinds. mmmmmmmmmm good stuff!
Thanks for the suggestion.

Thank YOU for thinking of adding hot sauce. Yummmmmmm!

I'm new to the board and new to these challenges. So just to be clear, for the purpose of THIS challenge, if, hypothetically, the bus is driving by a bar and I decide to hop off and have a drink, the bus will wait for me and not drive off?
We are going for total success days in Feb and not days till fail, right?
Some days just need a Caribbean holiday, mon.

That's exactly right, E. Add up your individual days and add them in.

Sunday I will be "off plan". I am not going to a Super Bowl party and staying sober! LOLOL
Today, no problems so far. :D Bacon and eggs for breakfast. I have some "emergency cheese" in the office fridge. I will be making wings tonight for dinner....yummmmm!

As Red said, any day during the 29 days of Feb that you eat "on plan" (spelled out in the opening post of this thread), then you can add a day to your count (and the TOTAL).
Just copy and paste the latest tally into a new post.
Add another day to the count for your row and the TOTAL row.
Then Submit the new tally.

BTW, anyone can join this Contest at anytime during the month of Feb. This is just to see how many total days the Bus members eat this way during the month.

Knowing I was starting today made me have all sorts of things last night I wouldn't normally. I had a small handful of macadamia nuts and a diet 7-Up and a big hunk of 85% dark chocolate!! I rarely have those things. Actually, I've been eating macadamias here and there for the last 2 weeks because we have a big tub of them from the bulk store. I guess squeeze will have to finish them on his own. Which I'm sure he won't mind doing!

I went through the fridge yesterday and ended up making hubby a giant salad for lunch. There is enough for me to make him one more today, then the green temptations are all gone.
I need to make breakfast, and then I am going to brown some pork chops and put them in the slow cooker. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
I made it all day yesterday without Splenda. Today should be a piece of steak :D

Just got up. Had one cup of plain coffee, read the morning computer, and now I will prepare eggs, ham, & butter for breakfast. Later today I'll eat pork chops and ribeye steak. Incidently, are the pork skins on this challenge?
|
Dean
|
Lana, yes the pork rinds/skins are on this challenge. If you mix some hot sauce into some sour cream, it makes a wonderful dip for them.

0.0000 kg
That is my fat loss so far.
I will try to post this every day to show where it's at. Hopefully it will be something like 5.4431 by March.

I'm glad my MacBook comes with an easily accessible US/Metric converter so I can figure out what you're talking about. Some of the time.
(Just teasing!)
|
Dean

pound - kilogram conversion factor: 2.20462263 pounds = 1 kilograms
Copy and paste 2.20462263 pounds into Google.
Google can be used for all sorts of conversions and calculations.
Copy and paste 88*88 or 1000/10 or 422 miles or 2+2 or 15 tbsp or 41 Fahrenheit etc.
This is a good site for conversions: http://www.worldwidemetric.com/metcal.htm

I'm in! Better late than never.
I'll be starting tomorrow (I start everything tomorrow) bc I already had homemade tomato soup and some almond crackers. But I want to do this bc man, I really veered off course over the holidays and have just recently been back to normal eating. Course, this frees me up to justify an insane Cheezie binge this evening :) If I wanna truck through the massive snowstorm for crapola non-food, that is.
I'm also quitting my smoking relapse starting tomorrow, so it's a good time for new starts! I'd like to see how long I could go carnivorous (with a bit of hot sauce, etc). My weight is good, but this last bit of body fat might just budge...
Red, this was a great time for you to give me the egg-latte recipe! I usually do tea, so for me that's in with the coffee allowance, and I am going to shoot for taking it black instead of with coconut milk. I have some cream to use up - was going to make a mousse, can you freeze cream for later use? Hey, that rhymed.

Great, Tracy!
You've been added to the tally.
