hello allhello, glad I found this forum!
my name is trevor, 25 y/o male. I had weight problems, despite being athletic and active, starting approximately 5 years ago. at one point I had ballooned up to 270lbs. excercise, dieting, running, biking ... nothing helped.
a couple years ago, I heard about paleo eating. bought cordain's book. made sense, so I gave it a try. I ate that way for apprx one year with no weight loss to speak of. I should say that the meat I was eating was very lean, primarily chicken and turkey. I did feel better though! sometime last year I came across the weston a price website which advocates eating lots of animal fat. I also, at that time, read neanderthin (my favorite diet/nutrition book), as well as any other paleo literature I could find online. at that time I started eating lots of red meat. I also found a good source of local grass-fed beef.
my tastes quickly changed. soon I couldn't eat lean meat, as I CRAVED FAT. I got to where I was eating at least a pound of cooked ground beef, bison, or lamb every night. it got to the point where I didn't want anything but meat. I ate the occasional vegetable, and usually about 1 apple a day, but my cravings for anything but fat and meat were gone. I also usually ate a can of sardines and maybe a raw egg or two in the morning, simply because they were fast to eat in the morning before work. I also occasionally ate spoonfuls of raw butter, coconut oil, or cod liver oil just to try and get more fat.
the amazing thing is, as soon as I added all this fat into my diet, I rapidly lost weight. I did NOT excercise much if any during this period. over the course of about 4 months, I lost around 70 lbs. of course, everybody wanted to know what I'd done. when you tell somebody you ate almost nothing but red meat, with the occasional vegetable, they usually just mutter something like, "oh, that's horrible for you". so many people have asked me how to loose weight and none, save one have actually tried what I've told them (they all think I'm crazy). the one guy who did lost 35 lbs in less than 2 months. unbelievable.
I must say that this was so unbelievabley easy to do. It took almost no discipline on my part as my tastes had changed and all I wanted was red meat.
I've recently been working out and have started packing on some muscle. It's astonishing. I look like a totally different person than I did one year ago. I wish I had before and after pics.
now I'm ready to take it to the next level. in the past few days I have started to experiment with raw meat. my hope is to eventually be on a 99% raw meat and occasional fruit/veggie diet.
I'm no expert, but if I can help anyone out at any time, let me know and feel free to contact me. I look forward to conversing with, and hopefully learning from you folks.

Hey trevor
I have been using coconut oil and have been seeing success recently with weight loss. Hope it keeps up. My trouble is that while I have lost about 14 pounds recently, I can barely tell in the mirror.
Where do you get grass fed beef and raw butter? How much do they cost in your area? Wish I could find some where I live.

Hey Trevor, welcome aboard the Bus! It sounds like you've had great success with your way of eating. Like you, this way of eating has been very easy for me. It takes almost no discipline at all. Not everybody is so lucky, though. Looking forward to hearing more from you. Enjoy the ride!

thanks guys (and gals)
jake- there is a farm around here in TN (west wind farms) and they come to a few different farmer's markets locally. grass fed ground beef is apprx $5 a pound. they sell about every cut you could imagine, but the ground is the most economical for me. they also sell chicken, pork, and lamb products.
it is illegal to sell raw milk or butter in TN for human consumption. they can, however, sell raw milk and butter for pet consumption. if you consume it, that's your business. raw cheese can be sold for humans, so long as it is aged at least 60 days. raw milk is apprx $7 for half a gallon, butter $9 per pound.
I'm not trying to plug these people, but if you are looking for a good source of grass fed products, they do ship. just google "west wind farms" and you'll find them. it's a husband and wife team; I've met them both and they are wonderful people.
during the period of my losing weight, I was eating probably 75% grass fed meat. had I been eating commercial grain fed meat, I cannot saw whether I would have lost any less. however, some things to consider:
1.grass fed beef has much higher levels of CLA, which has shown to increase weight loss.
2.grass fed beef has the correct balance of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. grain fed beef has much more omega 6 than it does 3. my understanding is that eating an abundance of grain fed beef throws off your omega 3 to 6 ratio, resulting in a deficiency of omega 3. this would explain why it is commonly recommended that a person take omega 3 supplements, because the majority of people are omega 3 deficient. omega 3 supplements are listed by the FDA as preventing coronary heart disease. so it could be theorized that a lack of omega 3 could cause heart disease. what could cause you to lack omega 3? eating commercial, grain-fed red meat. hence, this is the link between red meat causing heart disease. the studies which link heart disease and beef do not differentiate between grain-fed and grass-fed, and because grass fed beef is eaten by very few people, we can assume that those studies are based on commercial grain fed meat. grass-fed beef (the way nature intended it) provides balanced levels of omega 3 and would NOT cause any heart disease. at least that's how I theorize it, although I am neither a doctor nor a scientist.
