Hey

Hey fellow carnivores and low-carbers,

I thought I would just post a little reintroduction.

It's been quite some time since I've looked around on the bus.  Rest assured: I NEVER got off the bus- I was just hiding in the back corner reading books and stuff Cool

Well, after joining here awhile back, life swept me away- senior year for school, horse showing season, studies, philosophy, etc. etc. etc.  Fortunately, I recently received an e-mail from Dean inviting me to drop on in.  So here I am, it's good to see the forum is alive and well.

Anyway, onto my current dietary state.

Currently, I am still a pure carnivore and doing great.  I'm in the healthiest and most robust state of health in my life, and I can't imagine eating any other way.  Through weight training as a carnivore, I have gained 10 pounds of muscle in the past 2 months, and I have no problems sprinting, lifting heavy weights or doing other anaerobic activities.

I've been tinkering with intermittent fasting as well, and that has been a cool experience.  I find that a good fast really clears my mind and makes me energetic.  I began generally doing a one-day-on/one-day-off fasting schedule, but, because it is simply so convenient and energizing, I find myself doing 24 hour fasts from day to day many times throughout the week, often not eating until evening on most days. Overall, I'm really loose and flexible about it- I'm not concerned about "breaking" the routine if I need to eat a pwo meal early in a fast day, for example, or if I do two fasting days in a row.  I feel that it is not important to strictly conform our bodies to a rigid eating schedule in order to achieve health benefits- our bodies run independently of time and other human inventions.

I eat a lot of food (I'm a weight-lifting male teenager, after all), typically 3,000 calories minimum, 6,000 calories maximum.  I can easily eat up to five pounds of muscle meat per day, in addition to 10 eggs, a stick or two of butter or other fat and several ounces of liver and other organs.

Anyway, there's my reintroduction.  It's good to be out of the back seat and out partying with the carnivores- pass me some kool-aid, Dean Cool

Hey Matt! Great to see you!  Sunny

I spent hours perusing your website yesterday!  Cool
Great info! That Vit C post was particularly enlightening -I've not seen such detailed info on that whole issue before -thanks!

Very heartening too to hear of the great success you're having  Yup . Congrats! I just love success stories!  Grin

Do you drink coffee? I ask because when eating high fat I find myself gravitating towards IF too. Thing is though, I'm so used to thinking about food (from back in the days when I starved myself to stay thin), that finding myself not hungry leaves me at a bit of a loss!  Roll Eyes Hopeless, I know!

Anyway, so I find myself drinking coffee to 'fill-in' the time, and since I can't seem to find definitive info regarding the whole 'coffee may trigger insulin' thing, I'm thinking this ain't ideal.

I'm also studying full-time which doesn't help since I'm always seeking 'distractions' -used to overcome them with mindlessly munching carrots and celery back in my CR days  Roll Eyes .

So did you find any of this an issue at all when doing IF, and does it fade in time with a little perseverance? Or have you never been a 'grazer' so to speak, and thus never felt at a loss when suddenly confronted with extended periods of lack of hunger?
Dean

Matt,

In honor of your return, let's break out the good stuff, shall we. Cool

jeff

Welcome back, Matt.  Good to see you.
Matt

Thanks for the re-welcomes, everyone!

Nope.  I only drink water.  I allow herbal teas on my diet, but I haven't had any in several months at this point.

I don't know too much on this issue, but from what I have studied caffeine seems to mess with your insulin sensitivity and blood sugar, so it probably isn't ideal.

I used to do the same thing, only with pens and pencils haha

I used to be a pretty hardcore raw-foodist near-vegan- so I'm definitely familiar with grazing haha.  I had to eat all the time otherwise I would starve.  Thus, I quickly became pretty deeply ingrained into the habit of eating to 'fill-in' time, simply because I ate all the time and felt practically malnourished if I didn't.

In the initial transition to carnivore (non-IF), I found myself travelling to the fridge quite often, just randomly looking for food even after a meal.  I filled the time by simply eating sticks of butter whenever I thought about eating food- and all that fat really downgraded my constant desire to eat all the time.  Within a month or so, my psychology had rewired itself to my new eating pattern and I no longer had to use the "eat plain fat" method to mimic my previous grazing pattern.

So, by the time I started IF, I was already adapted to a psychology of infrequent meals.

Maybe you could try just eating fat like I did for awhile? Whenever you think about food, you could just stuff yourself with plain fat to decrease your appetite.  Being pure fat, it fills you up pretty quick and sort of 'repels' you from food and onto other things.

Perhaps you could also try a VLC gum? (Although I don't know of any gums that don't have some nasty AS in it). Just chew when you think about food or need a distraction or time-filler.  Herbal teas could also be an option- dandelion root tea tastes similar to coffee.

A water sipper works pretty good. Keep it full of ice water and handy. Also, I totally understand what Matt is talkin' about with fat. Just getting started on this WOE can leave one feeling pretty down, from the initial lack of energy, as the enzyme switch takes place. The lift I would get from eating some butter would always help me to remain calmer and happier during the keto-adaptation phase.

Matt (and Dean!), thanks for taking the time to answer in such depth. I really appreciate it as this 'issue' is now really the only one that keeps stuffing me around!

These suggestions are excellent guys!  Sunny  And it really helps to know that you experienced this damn phenomenon too, but that with some perseverance (and nifty tricks with fat  Wink ), you did get past it!  Cool

I will most definitely try these tactics. Yup

I really want to quit coffee as I am starting to notice that it actually seems to deplete me of energy, messes with my mood and soon after drinking I notice my ability to concentrate when studying worsens rather than improves!  Shock
I don't know if this is because my body is becoming more sensitive to 'rubbish'  LOL but I don't recall this ever happening before.
These symptoms are why I'm getting more suspicious that coffee may indeed 'mess with your insulin sensitivity and blood sugar', as you put it Matt!

Thanks again guys, I am much encouraged and spurred on!

BJ, I'm giving it up in April, along with the cream.

Check this thread.

BTW, I've noticed that the cleaner I eat, the more any non-foods (non-animal foods) affect me. It's normal to get really sensitive to things. We've been dulling our senses and shocking our bodies so long with rubbish, that once we let go of that stuff, we start to notice all sorts of things.
Billi-Jean

Wow  Ack!! Crap! That's a serious downer, Dean!  Sad
Those articles are really depressing ...stress hormones -> insulin -> aging -> moodiness etc. etc.  Cry

...oh god, of course after reading about its potential negative effects, all I want now is a double espresso!!

Did someone say Coffeeholics Anon?  Roll Eyes
