Ok Karen....you're not really from Chicago, are you?
A new journal seems approporiate. A new journal for a new beginning.

that southern drawl is because of spending so much time online..others are rubbin off on me i guess.. he he
It's 2:43pm and the day is going great. I kinda feel like a fish out of water with all the food changes and not even knowing WHAT to eat..but i am taking Dean's advice and eating anything paleo i want without worrying about it and getting my health back without worrying about weight loss yet. I need some adjustment time.
So here is what i ate so far today..(you'll laugh)
1 cup coffee with 1 Tb of coconut oil and small splash of cream
1 banana
3 fried eggs fried in small amt of butter and olive oil
fried ham
15 raw almonds
6 ozs pineapple
1 half avacado
3 oz carrot juice
1 hard boiled egg
so far so good..I actually feel more energy than i have felt in weeks. This is exciting!

Hey, Karen! Glad to see you are getting into some good eating, and that your family is on the same page. That will make a huge difference in your success.
Keep up the good work. You know you can do this thing, and it sounds like you have family support, which is super!

i did 3 days of strict paleo...
then i faltered.....
ive stayed away from the sugar and eaten lower carb all week
i weigh about 4 lbs less than i did last tuesday morning..this is a good thing!
I've had it...i cant stand it anymore..im sick of killing myself..i can barely walk up the stairs..i am sick of my body hurting..

Good job dropping 4 more pounds!
I hope you like going VLC. I am enjoying it so far.

Karen
|
hi jeff and heather..
thanks for stopping by!
i did really good yesterday! yay!
here is what i ate:
cup coffee with lotsa cream
3 scrambled eggs in butter
with 1 oz american cheese and 1 oz mont jack
4 pcs bacon
2 pcs beef bologna
1 hard boiled egg
2 porkchops with butter melted on them
egg salad made with 3 eggs and mayo
1 oz mont jack cheese
handful cashews
I've decided i am trying to stick to VLC as much as i can stand it..and eat mostly meats, eggs, and fat...but i am "allowing" myself occasional veg, fruit or nuts as a sanity keeper..almost like they will be a once in a while "treat"..like last night when i felt really crazy after eating no carbs all day..i wanted to dive into a cake..instead i took a handful of cashews and called it a night..i think that will work for me. Not making veg, fruits or nuts a part of my daily food..but making them a "once in a while treat" for when i really feel the need for them..and i figure that might happen often my first couple weeks..and thats ok...until i get my body really ketogenic
|
Dean

Karen, this is what I meant when I said you have to find your own way of doing this, and not follow any books or such. You are figuring things out for yourself, and from the looks of things, are doing fantastic. That is a very good strategy you have adopted. Stick to it, cuz from my own experience, I know what you are doing now will be a cinch. It's very true that when you crave junk, you can satisfy those urges with a little fruit or nuts. I used to eat that way, and I lost body fat on a very consistent basis. The trick is, as you are so correct in doing, is to keep your fat intake high, cuz that will satiate you so much that you won't even need those occasional treats of fruit and nuts that often.
WTG, Karen! Keep up the good work!

ok..heres where i stand..
i am down 9 lbs since Jan 1
I have been reading the old Bear thread and had forgotten how much great stuff he had to say! BUT...due to acculturation and little will power i have come to the conclusion that the Bear diet is just too difficult for me..lol. But thats ok.
I am glad i TRIED to eat VLC for the past 2 days because it got rid of cravings and helped bring back mental clarity and i am much more motivated to move forward on low carb!!
I have decided to eat paleo with cream, butter and cheese ...pretty much any and all low carb/good carb foods. I have ALOT of weight to lose and i need to do something that will WORK for me for LIFE. Diets dont work. I can't go on a diet and then go off of it after losing..i need to make this a way of life.
Here is my food for yesterday:
coffee with cream
5 fried eggs with butter
2 pcs bacon
chicken with skin and broth (probably 8 ozs)
lamb (maybe 6 ozs or more)
2 oz cheddar
1 string cheese
1 strawberry
small handful cashews
1 banana
lotsa water

I think that's what almost everybody finds. And that's what Bear said.....very few could follow the path. But, you can achieve great benefits from coming as close as you can. Your food from yesterday looks great. If you keep that up, you will be fine.

Never giving up is the key. You have to have it in your mind that whatever path you take, it has to be done with the idea that it is forever. Sure, we may slip up once in awhile, but we must stay on the path that we have chosen.
|
Karen
|
YES YES YES...i have really been thinking about that this week Jeff..you are so right...it really really does have to be for life..ya think by now i would KNOW this and do it...i started LCing in 2002...some people like ME are kinda dense..

I am so sorry for what you are going through! It will take some time to heal from this. Give yourself the time you need and be gentle with yourself. But whatever you do...don't use it as an excuse to binge..it will only make you feel worse. Stick with your neanderthin program and keep your mental clarity. Come cry on my shoulder anytime you need to! |
Thank you Karen.
I'm never using this as an excuse to binge because I feel,in some way, that would give my ex power over me.
My youngest teenager has been offering to get me my fav treat from the store since it happened (Sour Cream and Onion Ruffles) but I have refused and told him I don't want those and that it would not be worth it to feel miserable AND sick.
I really don't have much of an appetite right now but I have been forcing myself to eat very small portions of meat or fish and I am drinking lots of water and green tea to keep hydrated and I am taking my vitamin every day. This morning was the first morning since Tuesday evening that I felt hunger pains but they did not last long because I needed sleep more then food.
That is what I call the Break Up diet. I'm losing a lot of water retention
but that is good because I can spare that.
This morning I was even thinking that breaking up with me might have been the best thing he ever did for me.
Now I have to go call Bell Canada and get my phone number changed into a unlisted number so he cannot call me in case he changes his mind and decides he misses me.
Thanks.

Ok..i am in shock! I have lost another 10 lbs since tuesday! So my total weight loss since Jan 1 is 19 lbs.
19 lbs in 12 days!!!
I think this is why...i am still Breastfeeding. From what i understand it speeds up your metabolism and you burn 500 cals a day breastfeeding so it is easier to lose weight while bfing. apparently so! i have NEVER lost this much weight in such a short time!!! NEVER!!
Meg...now we know why u lost 17 lbs in one week in June!!
Usually when i have done atkins induction i lose 12 lbs in the first two weeks..and i also got pissed because my dad and hubby would lose 16-17 lbs their first two weeks. Well..i now have a secret weapon! Maybe i will breastfeed FOREVER! muhahahahahaha
|

my food for yesterday:
2 cups coffee with cream
3 scrambled eggs in butter

1 TB salsa
1 oz cheddar cheese
2 pcs turkey bacon

5-6 ozs of chicken with broth
5 strawberries
10 almonds
1 hunk liver sausage

Tuesdays Food:
3 scrambled eggs in butter
with 1 oz cheddar
2 pcs turkey bacon
2 hunks liver sausage
2 ozs muenster cheese
(leftover) Concoction i made with:
1/4 lb Ground beef, onion, mushrooms,
broccolli, tomato sauce, mozz cheese,
parmesan cheese
1 banana
1 TB peanut butter
handful cashews
small handful almonds
1 oz turkey
4 ozs wild salmon
2 beef hot dogs
1.5 cups cauliflour with butter/garlic
OK>>YES..thats ALOT of food...the reality is..i had a difficult day and couldnt seem to stop eating! You could say i went on a binge..only i stayed low carb on the binge..so HEY! (thats where the Peanut butter comes in as well)
I decided that i am out of hand with the cheese and the nuts at this point..so its time to re-evaluate...i was thinking back and forth between atkins and paleo..but realized whichever i pick i got to stick to it and not waver around..i CANT eat fruit AND cream, cheese and butter...OR i will be lucky if i lose! So i have decided to go paleo...without the dairy!! SCARY SCARY SCARY! I'm gonna try...i decided this AFTER i had a coffee with cream this morning..but thats ok...
|
Karen
|
ohhhhhhhh... and some bad news
my scale was whacked out the other day..(which im not surprised)
i didnt really lose 19 lbs in 2 wks...sigh
but i DID lose 11.6 lbs in 2 wks
(which makes more sense...every time i have ever low carbed i have always lost 11-12 lbs in my first 2 wks..thats standard for me)
So looks like breastfeeding isnt no secret weapon after all..but it didnt HINDER my loss either...actually it might have helped..because i was eating fruit AND dairy and still managed to lose 11.6 lbs.
I am not gonna let the scale malfunction depress me...its ok
|
jeff
|
Well 11.6 pounds in 2 weeks is still great!
|
Red
|
Totally! That's an amazing amount of weight to lose in that period. Feel proud of yourself and KEEP GOING!! Think about it, even if you *only* lose 2 lbs a week - a year from now, you would have lost over 100 lbs.

Karen,
On the Bus, even if you start a new journal, and even if you name it "i thought this was my journal??", more than likely, it's still gonna get hijacked from time to time... what, with all these folks on Kool-Aid , stumblin' back to their journals, after visiting the back of the Bus!
If it gets out of hand, just contact Heather (or any of the Bus Boot Babes) and she'll take care of things. It may be in your journal that she does , but it might correct the situation... at least temporarily.

And here i am AGAIN! lol
My hubby and i are going to start atkins Saturday, april 5th.
i plan on doing the LC grocery shopping on Friday and starting Saturday.
We are both READY. We have talked about it for weeks, now its time to do it.
i have tried everything else and amazingly have found nothing works but LC! DUH!? lol
I have had knee problems since about OCT and i am just feeling so gross and lethargic.
I am nervous about week 1 because i KNOW it will suck! i always have the WORST sugar and carb withdrawals when i start..which just proves how much i need to be OFF the carbs.
I am back to the boards for movtivation. I hope you guys aren't sick of me coming and going and trying to start and failing a thousand times.
Pass the kool-aid I think i will need it!

i decided to use a current pic as my new avatar..even though i hate it and it grosses me out. But it is REALITY! this is how fat i have gotten..sigh! Now i have motivation to LOSE because i will be dying to put up a new pic...lol

Yeah, me too, Heather! I can still feel that pain thinking about it. I destroyed every photo I could get my hands on (which I regret now, of course, but it seemed like a good idea at the time ).

2 Heathers, Dean , Nicole and Billi-Jean,
thanks for stopping by my journal and encouraging me! i really need it!
thanks for the video Nicole..it's always inspirational to see people sucess stories and their bodies before and after!
I just realized i started LCing 5 yrs ago and here i am almost the weight i first started trying YET again...thats kinda depressing...but i can't cry over the past or all the falls i have taken..i need to just look forward and know that i CAN do this!
The last few months have been filled with wake up calls including a friend of the family that is the same age as me and died suddenly and they dont even know why. Also, my cousin that is a year younger than myself is having heart problems. My Grandma was in from Florida for my Brothers wedding for 3 weeks and we threw her 80th Birthday party. My 80 yr old Grandma is in better shape than i am! She was bending down cleaning the bottom of my refridgerator and i almost started crying because i realized i am in worse shape than my 80 yr old Grandma..and what scared me worse..is if i am in worse shape than her at 38....what shape would i be in at 80 if i even made it there? That really freaked me out. That is scary!
|
Heather L
|
Karen-- I had an experience recently that made me think about what shape I will be in when I am older. I was at the YMCA getting ready to go lift weights and several older women were chatting in the mlocker room. They were all sharing stories of cancer removal, shoulder surgeries, hip replacements, heart attacks, and more.... I was thinking to myself, " I am not going there without a fight! This is why am here to exercise!" It was a good motivator.
|
jeff
|
Karen, glad to see you back. You can do this!!! I think it will also help having hubby along for the ride. It should be easier if you don't feel like you're doing it alone.

Look life has all kinds of emotional trouble; it starts very young and is passed on right from the start of life. All those emotionals we experience from the act of procreation, embryo, birth, baby...on and the connection to food, our mother, father, people and life in general.

Looks like your doing really well. Good luck with your clean eating!! |
I'm always working on it, I think, generally, it does get easier over time but I still have days that are difficult. Those days I stuff myself with meat, I'm physically full but I still want something to munch on. Probably not the healthiest to overeat that way but most times it keeps me out of the sugar.
Hang in there Karen!
|
Karen
|
hi again everyone! thanks for the continued support
it makes me when i come to my journal and see you all here!
Just to let you know i didn't wait till Saturday..i couldn't.
i woke up last night with acid reflux and had to find the Tums and thought to myself "WHY am i waiting till Saturday again?" i have enough LC food in the house to get me through my first day!
So i am happy to report it is 5:19pm and i have eaten nothing but LC foods today!! I am cooking dinner right now and after dinner i am running to the grocery store to get more of the foods i need!
I know this isnt a weight loss board..but in my journal i will be tracking my daily carb count and foods i eat and my weekly weight.
Day 1

Start weight 284.2 lbs
I'll list my days food when the day is complete...
|
Karen

i wanted to share my long term plan!
i am turning 40 in 15.5 mos! I want to be at my goal weight by my 40th birthday! I want to look forward to my 40's and not be depressed about them!
So i have 125 lbs to lose and 15.5 mos to do it! (though if i lose 100 by that time i would be happy). Now i just gotta hope i don't get pregnant again until i get to my goal weight this time..since the last two times i got pregnant 6 mos into LCing and so i never have finished losing all my weight and keep gaining it back! argh!
So i pretty much have to lose 8.5 lbs per month on average for this to work!
|
jeff
|
Nice job on the food today, Karen. Lookin' good! 8.5 pounds per month should be very doable for you, if you stick with it. Some people do stall sometimes for no apparent reason, but we'll just hope that doesn't happen with you.
Good luck on your journey.

Hey, Karen,
That food list looks great. Keep up the good work!
YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR WAY OF EATING!!!
You can, and you will. And, most important, make it a way of life. The weight will take care of itself if you do that.
Go, Karen!

I feel exactly the same way about heading into my forties, but when I saw in print that it was only 15.5 months away (since we have birthdays only one day apart) I was like...
I didn't realize it was getting that close. I seriously don't feel close to 40. I feel like I am in my 20's. Oh well. I guess I should just be glad I don't feel older than my age, right?
Karen, we can make our goals. Keep the fighting spirit.

That's right. And the same goes for me. I'll be 50 in less than 2 years. I'm in good shape now, but my goal is to be in the best shape of my life when I turn 50.

Wow, you're down about 5 pounds already! Mostly water and glycogen, I know, but still. It's always good to see the scale go down, no matter what the reason.
You're doing great with you food so far. Keep it up, and you will succeed.

Great job Karen!
Be extra vigilant on the third and fourth days, they can be much harder.
|
Karen
|
Jeff,
Yep i am sure its water and glycogen, no fat loss yet, but i like the lower number on the scale. It helps with motivation!
heather,
Yes i KNOW from past experience day 4 is ALWAYS my hardest day and many times in the past day 4 is when i went off binging on carbs. Tomorrow will be day 4 and thankfully i will be busy at church and my hubby will be home all day and i think that will help alot. I am ready and this time i am gonna beat day 4!
|
Karen
|
Oh i forgot to add in my food journals that i have been taking 1 tsp of cod liver oil per day also!
|
Nicola
|
How does that work - losing water and glycogen = losing weight? Does one experience more urin?
You don't mention water, but I take it that you drink water? Now that you are eating more fat - do you drink less?
Do you feel hungry eating this way? Do you ever feel sick of food? I know people are different, but I need a long, long time between meals (IF). I tend to think so many people have a good appetite and I have to "make" one!

Nicola,
I don't know exactly how it works i just know when you start LCing you have water loss FIRST and thats why you drop so much the first week, its not all fat loss. I don't know the specifics on it, i am sure someone else here does though.
YES! i am hungry eating this way...especially the first few days to a week, but then after that..my appetite drops down and i start eating less.
besides raw meat and fat and water..do you eat anything else? I'm curious.

I made it through day 3. These first 3 days were pretty easy, but they usually are. I have aimed for higher fat than usual hoping to curb some withdrawal symptoms and i think that it worked.
Day 3
April 5, 2008
Food log
18 ozs coffee
1 TB coconut oil
2 TB cream
1 TB coffee mate (uggh..had it at my in-laws in my coffee, its 2 carbs per serving...it was either that or drink it black and i hate it black)
3 scrambled eggs
2 slices bacon
1 sausage patty
1 TB of butter
2 ozs Roast Beef
1.5 ozs provolone cheese
1.5 ozs cheddar cheese
1.5 ozs ham
1 string cheese
7 hot wings
2 TB ranch dressing
egg salad (2 HB eggs + 1 TB Mayo)
1 tsp cod liver oil
1 Diet coke
water
16 carbs
I just noticed i never ate veggies today..i didn't feel like it. That is one thing i learned here on this board..veggies aren't a neccessity. The first time i did atkins back in 2002 i thought i HAD to have 3 cups of veggies per day. Now i see it more like "you can have UP To 3 cups of veggies per day IF you feel like it!"

Exactly, Karen. And many find that they do better with none.

Karen, I am trying to understand my/our body and life. Our mind plays tricks. If you are big (that is not negative - health is not just weight) then your body needs more to keep things working. On the other hand your mind also knows that you are big and just that thought tell's you to eat more - more than you might need??? I don't know, but it's our mind telling me/you what to do.
I think, that I will take that about raw meat and fat out; I am not and will never be interested in "showing off" or think/trying to be "better"? Our world is full of that.
My mind has so many things to work out and when I move about then my body is having a good meal on the fat and protein that is in the system = no need to eat; I end up looking for my hunger.
keep it up for life! Nicola

HELP~!
Please help me figure out what it is going on! I am on day 4. i felt totally fine the first 3 days. Now today after eating breakfast within 30 mins i got really really really nauseus and then had diarrea twice within fifteen minutes. my stomach kinda hurts, i am still somewhat nauseus but feeling slightly better..im drinking water now.
here are my thoughts on what might be happening:
1. withdrawal symptoms from carbs and sugar have kicked in
2. I am eating too high of fat.
3. I ate too much fat in one sitting.
4. i am eating to much pork
5. I got a bad piece of pork
6. I am eating too much fat and not enough protein
7. my gallbladder being gone..i shouldnt have as much fat
8. maybe my body does better on 60% fat rather than 80% fat
9. maybe i got the stomach flu
Ok..some or none of these reasons above might play into this..i don't know.
Anyone have any ideas..i really don't feel good right now. i just feel sick to my stomach and tired and totally fatigued.
Would i be wise to not eat anything for 4 hours or more? Should i eat like 10 or 15 carbs? Should i eat some protein? Should i just drink water for awhile and then my next meal try to eat more protein and less fat?
please help me figure this out...im going crazy

continuing my thoughts from my last journal post...
i have now had diarrea a third time..i still feel somewhat nauseus..the thought of eating anything at all makes me want to puke..i just drank two glasses of water and all i feel like doing is drinking water right now...
some more thoughts..
i didnt drink much water at all the past few days
after eating lots of carbs and sugar for months...i might have just went into the FAT too quickly and should have started out my first week on 50-60% fat and worked my way up?
ugh...i just feel sooo sick....i dont remember ever feeling this sick on low carb...HELP

Don't eat any carbs. That would serve no useful purpose that I can see. I would say don't eat anything for several hours. Maybe just continue drinking some water.
It could be too much fat, too soon. It does take the body awhile to adjust to changes in diet. It could be alot of things. You may just be sick, and it may have nothing to do with diet.
I don't know what else to say. It might not hurt to cut back on the fat and then gradually increase. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Jeff,
i was posting the same time as you...see my post above yours as well...
i think i am either just sick with stomach flu...or i just ate too much fat too quick and my body needs time to adjust..i think your right.
this sucks!

I agree. Those seem to be the most likely causes.

Ok...thanks Jeff...
i just needed to hear from someone else..
i will not eat carbs...actually im just gonna drink water for awhile and later on a light meal of some protein/fat with maybe a 50-60% fat content and i think the next couple days ill lower the fat a bit and SLOWLY up it over the next couple weeks...i know i do ok on high fat..i think i just ate too much fat too quick...
Day 4 is just NEVER good for me..but usually its a carb craving hunger day..not a nauseus diarrea sick to my stomach day...lol
have a good day Jeff.

Karen, I've had this! Twice!
Day 4 -bacterial die off hit me hard on two occasions when going zero carb. Okay, so I know you're still eating some carbs but you seem to have reduced the amount more drastically this time than other times doing Atkins, yes?
So, it could just be that's what happening to you also. And if you eat carbs all you'll do is feed those bacteria that live off carbs and make them proliferate again. You want all these types of bacteria kept to a bare minimum, so try to just hang in there...this does NOT last long -one or two days is usually all it takes, then you'll be feeling like you have the quietest, happiest gut in ages!!
Too much fat too quickly may be adding to it somewhat but it isn't likely to be the primary cause...at least it wasn't for me.
I feel for you I know it's pretty horrible, but just hang in there.
Of course it could be any of the reasons you suggested also, but I have a sneaking suspicion you're going through what I did.

i bet your right! i have been having coconut oil in my coffee every morning..and i remember hearing that the coc oil helps bacteria die off quickly..i think i will cut the coc oil for a day or two and go slightly lower fat. Ill get through this. i am glad to know someone else went through this too. If ithis was my FIRST time on LC i would probably be thinking right now "this diet sucks and i am done with it" ....lol. but i know better..there has to be an explanation for it...bacteia die off sounds right...could you explain more about that? thanks

Oh heavens, coconut oil will do it, for sure! Seems to be a rather potent colon cleanser!
The large intestine has colonies of different types of bacteria that act on the remaining substances that past into it. Bacteria that feed off carbohydrates 'ferment' the carbs that weren't absorbed in the small intestine (ie: basically they use carbs to produce energy for themselves to survive).
The products the bacteria produce as a result of this fermentation are hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane gases...hence the flatulence associated with an over proliferation of these bacteria and excess carb ingestion.
When you stop eating carbs, these bacteria no longer receive, well, nourishment, thus they begin to die and are ejected in the faeces.
Ha! Where they belong.
Once you stop feeding them and their numbers are greatly reduced, you don't suffer all the bloating, gas and discomfort associated with eating plant matter, sugar etc.
If you start eating plenty of carbs again though, they proliferate again.

Looks like we found your answer, Karen.

I will echo everything BJ is saying. CO will kill bacteria. Not only is there a die off of certain bacterial colonies, but there is a switch out of gut bacteria. Karen, transitions to zero carb, carnivorous eating (and especially to raw eating) take a long time sometimes. Don't worry if you have loose stools for a long time. The gut pain and the flu symptoms are signs of not only gut issues, but the whole metabolic, enzyme, hormone changes that are taking place. Your body is freaking out, cuz you are changing things out suddenly. Your body wants it's old, familiar equilibrium, and it wants the comfort of the drug (carbs) you've been feeding it. But, the only way to get to a better place is through the changes, as much as you would like to go around them. Just ask a heroin or crack addict what detox is like.
Karen, we've all been through this. Just try to take from these experiences how horrible eating all that junk is, if it causes this many problems to get back to a natural human diet. You are going to have doubts (everyone does), but bring your mind back to the focus to get through this transition and on to a much better way of life. Your gut will be so quiet, trust me. Mine just gets quieter and quieter the more junk I give up.
Adjust the amounts of fat, the amount of water you drink, the amount of food you eat, etc. Get plenty of rest. You are going to have low energy and feel like crap, but that is your body detoxing and getting used to a new way of getting energy. If you have severe issues, seek medical help, but if you just feel sick, just adjust things and try to keep focused on the long term benefits. You really have no choice, do you? You can either get through these changes and adopt better eating habits, or put yourself at risk for tons of illnesses. Right?
Hang in there. As those who have been there, we're all behind you.

is this what they call candida die off? Too much yeast that accumulated from too much sugar? (i ate lots of chocolate from my sons easter basket the past two weeks..lol) or is this die off something different? i hope your right about it lasting a day or two..and please tell me i will feel energized after this die off is over. i feel like a truck hit me. Glad to know what it is though!
i am thankful for the support on this board and the knowledgeable people here to help me work through this..its scary when you don't know what is going on! Hubby is on Atkins with me and he feels great..argh...lol

Karen, I have been going through similar issues, giving up coffee, cream, and other things in the past couple months. The energy thing is gonna be a problem. Just accept it. You will figure it out later on, but it can go on for quite awhile, even weeks.
I hope you read my post above yours.
Hang in there, Karen.

Jeff...yep it seems we've solved the case..i had no doubt someone here would know what was wrong!
Dean..thanks for all the comments, i understand what your saying and agree. My diet was SOOO bad that i need to go through withdrawal and healing. Now that i think about it i remember going through something similiar other times when starting low carb. How easily we forget though..lol. If i remember right last time it lasted a few days to a week and then i started feeling better. Its weird how i was fine the first 3 days then it just totally hit me. This is just proof how carb addicted i am and how much i need carbs out of my life... I will NOT give into the carb monster
I will beat him down!
