January How Low Can You Go ChallengeHow low can you go... and how high can you get?
How high can your animal fat get, actually, and how low can you take those carbs.
This challenge will be based on consuming the fewest grams of carbs for the month. If you are doing so many that you cannot even estimate them, then you need to get locked up in one of these wings in the Ward... no, seriously, you should be able to guesstimate your daily carb consumption and keep track for the month.
So, the lower you score, the higher you fly... or something like that.
Does anyone else have any other suggestions on how this can work?
Since I'm about to embark on a ZCarnivore animal fat fest... just to piss off AC ... I think mine might be around 0. Of course, we shall see. If I start gaining body fat, I will have to go back to the Food Pyramidiot Diet... and head over to AC's board and endure the ridicule.

Hi Dean,
Are spices considered 0 carb?

I'd like to play, too. Minimal carb/maximum fat is exactly what I was planning. I'll be keeping track on Fitday. Maybe what I'll do is take a screen cap of the 'overview' page at the end of the month.

Well, if you plug the particular seasoning into FitDay you will find out. Or, we could say that all seasonings are "zero carb". What do you think we should do? Condiments are easy to determine carbage.
|
Valcan
|
Hi,
If I do use spices, I tend to use them sparingly so for me, I guess I would not count them unless I used a large amount. I believe that Tabasco is zero carb, is that correct?
I think anything we add that has at noticeable carbs has to be counted (like eggs, cream, cheese, garlic, onions, etc.).
What does everyone else think? I am open to whatever. Probably the fewer rules we have the better.
Val
|
jeff
|
I would consider herbs and spices to be zero carb.
|
Dean
|
I have to agree. Dry seasoning that does not taste sweet, and ZC sauces and condiments that say 0 carbs on the label, could safely be considered ZC. Back in April 2007, I went 14 days eating naked beef and pork meat. If I could have seasoned the meat, as I'm doing now, I could have continued for the entire month with no problem. Plain meat is so hard to eat. The difference between a lightly grilled chuck-eye with no seasoning, and one with some salt and pepper on it, are completely different as day and night. Bear was big into using seasonings. I think it is quickly becoming the cornerstone to me remaining on ZCarnivore eating.

Hi,
I use daily plate and it ranges from 0 for most postings but there is one that says there are 0.4 carbs in 5 large shrimp. I am thinking that they are so insignificant that we just agree not to count them.

Hi,
I had an interesting start to this challenge. Yesterday was zero carbs - and zero calories. I was in bed all day with either a virus or a reaction to some anti-typhoid pills I am taking. I had to close my eyes during food commercials on T.V. I did manage to sip on a cup of tea in the evening and it managed to stay down.
Today I am feeling way better. I have some beef short ribs cooking in the NuWave. Tonight I plan to cook a prime rib roast.

Hi,
Quick question for all you veteran zc'ers - Did you lose your appetite completely when you started? I have not had much to eat today at all but I have no desire to eat either. The thought of a bowl of salad sounds appetizing but not meat. Is this normal? I made a beautiful prime rib roast but only could manage a bit. I tried to eat a few extra bites but they made me gag!!!! I am not hungry so no big deal, I just know that my body needs more fuel than I gave it today to be healthy.
Val
|
Dean
|
Val,
Things will even out. There is an adjustment period. Eat when you feel like you really need to. That may take some time. I hope this helps.
BTW, we all carry fuel around with us, now don't we? How convenient, huh?
|

Day 1: 18oz ribeye
4oz chicken
1oz cheese
5 mugs coffee

5 mugs coffee
about 2 total carbs

Hi,
Day 3
Meal 1 - Prime rib roast (small amount), 2 chicken skins
Meal 2 - Prime rib roast with 1/2 tbsp sf ketchup (0.5 carbs but I will count it as one), 2 chicken skins
Water only to drink. It is -40F here and was wanting something warm so I sipped a hot cup of water - not really that bad (not that great either though).

Hi,
Day 4 complete.
Meal one: Half a bowl of cubed beef roast - I could not eat all the fat.
Meal two: 2 chicken thighs
That's it! I have induction flu, I miss eating! At least I didn't use ketchup today. Clothes are getting looser already so this is a good thing.

Perhaps it's as muich habit or ritual, as anything. Although I do like to have something hot to drink in the morning, especially in the winter. And I do like the flavor. Also, as far as I can tell, it doesn't cause me any problems, so I figure why not indulge?

Hey Dean,
Thanks! My zc record is a week so the real test is still coming. Last night, thoughts of Greek salad were in my head. Not a physical craving, more of a psychological thing (like missing an old friend).
I drinking vinegar is water okay? I think the best part of salad is the vinegar in the salad dressing. Do you think it is possible for vinegar to stall someone?

From Jan 3-Jan 6, here are my average stats:
Calories 1195
Fat 109 g, 80%
Protein 44 g, 15%
Carb 12 total, 2 fiber, 10 net
I ain't gonna win any awards for 10 net carbs per day, but that's low for me. I do count every little thing, even mustard and spices. Overall intake looks low, but I've just had no appetite the last few days.
Oh, and there were vodka calories on top of that.
|
jeff
|
Looks good, Marcie. Your calories seem a bit low, but I assume that is because you are just not very hungry. I do think it's fine to just eat when you're hungry, and stop when you feel you've had enough. If that's only 1200 calories or so per day, so be it. Keep up the good work!

That may very well be true, Lynne, but 1 tablespoon of garlic powder it alot! Go get a measuring spoon and look at how much one tablespoon is and then imagine putting that much garlic powder on your steak! I like to use garlic powder, and I can't imagine using more than about 1/8 of a teaspoon at one time.
|
Miriam
|
I'm thinking that the teensy little sprinkle of garlic powder I may use counts for nothing as carbs.
Lynne, if you don't like the unseasoned meat, why not add a little seasoning?
Do you think it might stall you? Or is it the kind of seasoning you use that is the issue?
Even the Bear (who has been zero carb for about 50 years) uses seasoning.
If you are eating too little aren't you afraid of lowering your metablolism?
Do you think I've asked enough questions that are probably none of my business?
Good to see you again and I'm so glad you are in the challenge.
By the way the fat is melting off me and I feel great. (except for sucky cold)
And as an aside, I like enjoying my food and the taste of it. I never bought into the you must be uncomfortable in this way of eating for it to work mindset.

3 Tbsp Pork Fat
Lunch:
1 Mug Beef Bone & Marrow Broth
Dinner:
1 Ginormous Hamburger
3 Tbsp Beef Fat
Late night Snack: (Yes I buttered cheese, dammit!)
3 Slices Emmenthaler Cheese
2 Tbsp Butter
6 Day Total Carb Count: 11g
Hiya Lynnie!!!!! Welcome to the gang. :) (hope it's ok to say that since i'm new too)
Miriam - I think cutting out spice is a load of crap for most. CW seems to think it causes cravings because of stimulating insulin production. But I maintain that the pleasure you get from eating fat and caramellized "fond" from the bottom of the pan stimulates just as much insulin and he doesn't seem to have a problem doing that...
Jeff, I agree with you though, that large volume of spice is pricey from a carb perspective and again agree, that 1 Tbsp of garlic powder is a bunch.

Wow, it looks like Lynne is leadin' this pack.
Believe me, it's totally normal to lose your appetite. The only time I plan on getting worried about how much I eat is when I start shriveling up and am getting too skinny (anorexia). If that ever happens, I will do some serious soul searching about what my relationship with food is. Until then, I'm not gonna trip on it if I can go without food for long spells at a time. I know my body is healing itself with all this IFing, that my GI tract is healing itself form all the bacteria and other destructive things I'm sure I've put it through, and my excess belly fat is being used for fuel, which is why it is disappearing so nicely.

Pooti,
I think 11g in six days is AWESOME!
I think that anything under 5 in a day is absolutely amazing. This challenge is not about everyone going to zero. It is called, "How low can YOU go". Everyone is in a different place and everyone has a slightly different idea of what zc means for them. This challenge is about thinking how low you want to go and then going for it! Maybe you are eating 20 g of carbs a day and you want to spend January going to 15 g - I think that is great. No pressure for perfection or going absolute zero here! We are all winners in this challenge by the end of the month. We winner slimmer and healthier bodies.

Dinner: Pork steak, approx 1.18 pounds, glass red wine.

Hi! I think I'm going to jump into this challenge, even at this late date. I've been letting my carbs creep up since the first of Jan., so I won't win, but I'd like to challenge myself to see how few I can add from here on out.

Yeah Lynne you might have to watch cravings. I'm not sure why spices would cause cravings. Maybe I'm just lucky because just going zero took care of that.

Hi,
Day 8
Meal 1 : Grilled steak and extra beef fat
Meal 2 : Ground beef, chicken wings
I can relate to what you were saying Lynne about not eating. When I got home tonight, the thought of eating meat repulsed me but I was hungry. I decided to fry up some fatty ground beef with Cajun seasoning (I have been avoiding all seasoning too). It was delicious and went down easily. I am not satiated and happy. Maybe one day "no seasoning" will make sense to me but right now if I do not season, I do not enjoy my meal. I did not use much at all but it made a big difference.

Somewhere around here, I read a couple of posts of people that said that they were going to continue with ZC until they lost all of their weight, and then they were going to start adding veggies and nuts back into their eating program..
I have a little story to tell.
Last summer, I had been eating ZC for a number of weeks.
Rolling along really well.
And then the news media started with the "recession" blues talk.
So I immediately thought of ways I could start cutting down my monthly bills..
One place I decided to cut was my protein. I figured I was spending too much money on protein so I started buying tons and tons of rabbit food.
Started eating salads everyday for lunch and a salad with my protein at night. Just shy of a week, I developed a horrible, horrible pain in my left side, near my belly button.
I thought maybe my rabbit food had impacted in my intestines so I of course went out and bought an enema.
That wasn't it.
Then I thought maybe it was some kind of infection.
wasn't that either.
I made it to the ER buckled over in pain.
They did a series of Xrays, blood work, urine work.
45 minutes later the ER doc came in and told me I had a case of diverticultis.
I've never had anything like that before.
He told me it was because I changed my diet too radically.
radically? i was ONLY eating salads!!!
What did I learn from this: your intestines adjust to your diet. when you change it, your intestines will react.
So if you plan to go back to your old WOE, better do it slow and gradual.
otherwise, you could end up like i did.
just some advice from someone that has been there.

Lynne, if you were eating too much protein, you should have just started eating more fat. They give that stuff away at most meat counters, ya know.

morning dean.. i didn't know that back then.
i should have stayed active on this forum, back in Feb, when I joined.
i would have learned that...

updateis there any way we can make this little box white so we can see what we're typing?
last night i had chix thighs for dinner, drenched in fat.
6 hours later i had nausea.
i'm fine this morning and getting ready to dive into 3 thighs drenched in butter and chix fat.. (ate all the fat last night!)
doh!!!
we're going to have one of those days here today that makes you say, "god it's great to be alive."
Happy Friday everyone!
*** started ZC 12/27/2008
so far, two lbs down, and i've cut out caffeine, heavy cream and stevia.
*** forgot to mention: my son left a little of his breakfast this morning.. so i thought i'd finish it.. he left 1 egg, some melted cheese on top of the egg and about 1/4 cup of sage sausage.. i took one bite of the sausage and ate the yolk off the egg and found it absolutely awful.
threw the rest out.
now that's a first!!

Just finished brekkie. Wish I knew what my time really is here but I can't figure out how to reset clock to pacific time. Anyway it was approx. 12-13 hours since dinner last night.
Brekkie:
4 egg omelet with only 3 of the white. I was trying for a 3 egg omelet with only two white but the darn things just kept following the yolk. I'm going to buy an egg separator.
Omelet consisted of 4 eggs, left over ribeye diced and cooked separately in unsalted butter and Mrs Dash herb and garlic spice. OMG. I put the pan with the cooked ribeye in the oven while I made the omelet.
Diced Cheddar cheese in said omelet. I forgot the green sauce as a topper but it was still wonderful.
Coffee with heavy cream. Total carbs: zero!
Wow, when I read this back it sounds like a lot of work but it wasn't really.
I enjoy cooking and eating this way and finding other wonderful ways to cooking meat is just a great bonus.

Carleen - welcome! I'm new too!
Val - It's so wild what a little spice does to making food taste better.
Mir - Your menu sounds divine! I omelettes!!! How are you feeling today?
Lynne - It's weird about the chicken fat and pork fat. I'm suspicious it may have to do with the PUFAs in those fats. They are much higher than beef fat. I routinely add 3 spoons of beef fat to my hamburgers and steaks and never have a problem but dang, last night with my pork I was sooooo nauseated within about an hour and a half.
I'm still standing at 12g carbs for the total number of days.
Brekkie -
1 Hamburger
Dinner -
Pork ribs (salt, gran garlic pepper - slight seasoning)
Pork fat
Bedtime -
2 SF Cough Drops
2 tsp SF Cough Medicine
5ml Albuterol, 10ml Bronchosaline
800mg Ibuprofen
10mg Loratadine
30mg Prevacid
I don't really know how to count these carbs in the sugar free medicine but they were non-negotiable. I had to have em cuz of an asthma attck.

Dinner. I just don't want it. I ate two bites of a New York steak but don't want the rest. And no Sadie the dog is not getting the rest of it.
I'll figure out something to do with it tomorrow.
One glass white wine. I'm thinking wine does not increase my appetite.
Just one of those not wanting to eat nights.
pooti I think I am finally getting better. And I'm sorry about your asthma attack. It will be great if you can find the cause.

Hi Everyone,
Day 9
Meal 1 - Ground beef, chicken wings dipped in chicken fat
Meal 2 - Ground beef
Another good eating day down. I ate a lot at lunch and would have eaten more if I had more food with me. Tonight a dinner I could barely eat at all. I was hungry about an hour before I ate at noon but had to hold until my break. Being hungry when I eat seems to improve the eating experience for me. I love only eating twice a day.
Miriam: Your brekkie sounded divine! I would like to eventually bring a bit of cream, butter and eggs back into my diet. If I keep losing and stall, I may try to add some in to mix things up a bit. Glad to hear that the wine is not having an effect of your appetite.
Pooti - I hope you are feeling better soon.
Lynne - Congrats of the loss! Thanks for sharing your salad experience. It is good to know!

just wanted to update everything.
Today is day 15 for me..

can't believe all the energy i have.
i don't miss caffeine..
that was easy!
today's meals were
3 chix thighs drenched in fat and butter
prime rib bones seasoned with chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, and salt.
i'm feeling guilty using the salt.
my nails are growing like crazy, that's why i had to do something with them today..
my hair feels so much thicker.
i'm growing more hair!!!
ran out early this morning for fish for my cats and bones for me!!!
got a bunch of discounted meat at winn dixie for $13.00!!!

i'm feeilng great.
no problems anywhere.
i like the fact that i'm sleeping like a rock and that my hormones seem balanced... this is farking awesome.
i haven't had a drink of alcohol, but i sure wanted some beers during the football game, today.
and the football the other night...
and probably the football game tomorrow.
hahahahahah! but i'll live.
i've been craving wine.
Mir... if i could be sure that it wouldn't create cravings for me, i'd have a glass with you, girlfriend!!
that's about it.
my world is quiet tonight.
watching the Titan's play the Ravens... very exciting game..
when i watch the Raven's, i understand why they beat my Dolphins.
my cats are fat and happy, i'm getting skinny and happy..
and I have my Magic Bus...
who's the Kerouac fan????
Neal Cassady drove that bus!!!!
he's behind the wheel in that photo!

2 Riblets, boneless

Lynne, you are doing so great! Congratulations on the weight loss and for feeling so great and on top of things!!!! :hugs: You are doing this!
This is the first night I'm really craving and tempted to have wine. But I am determined I will not do it! It's cold here and we are now settled for the evening. A fire is going and we are watching The Queen on tv. Just finiahed half of a ribeye for dinner.

You guys are all doing so fantastic.
Yah, Lynne, that's Neal at the wheel.
All this talk of wanting wine... double ditto here.
But, alas, I shall refrain. Made promises to myself. Gotta think of that MAM deal and all.
Lynne, that's good to hear about your energy and not missing java. Same here. I don't ever even think about it at all. I have too much energy to add caffeine to my chemistry.

Hi Everyone,
Day 10 down! That is a third of the way already! Wow!
Today was interesting, I had some ground beef at noon. I cooked some sliced pork belly for my second meal. I had one piece and that is it, I did not have the appetite to eat more. This afternoon, I was making regular trips to the bathroom - my system is definitely being cleaned out.
Thanks Linda for noticing I broke my record, I forgot all about it. After adjusting to the initial shock of zero carb, food becomes so less important. It is nice not having to obsess about food most of my waking hours.
Dean - I hear you about the energy, I shoveled out my entire driveway today (it was really packed down). I don't even feel sore tonight.
Pooti - I used to secretly eat buttered cheese too. My DD is VLC and I suggested today that she try some butter on her cheese. When we go for groceries tomorrow, I will have to buy more cheese and butter - she loves it.
Hang in there and resist that wine, you can do it!
Lynne - WTG on the loss! I have thick hair already, I wonder if it will get even thicker now. I notice that my nails are hard too and I have only been on for ten days. Glad to hear you are feeling so great! It is very inspiring to me and helps me stay focused to hear others are doing so well.
