jeff's totally random thoughts while riding the Magic BusTime to start my journal here. I'm thinking this will be a little different. I'm not going to post my food every day, since I eat basically the same food all the time.
Foods I eat:
eggs
bacon
suasage
raw beef (just barely seared)
chicken
turkey
fish
pork
cheese
cream
Edit to add butter. (hey, I live in America's Dairyland!)
Things I drink:
coffee
water
dry wine
lite beer
If I eat or drink anything weird or naughty, I will post it.
Exercise: I have been doing cardio, mostly on my treadmill, since the first week of January, 2006. I do anywhere from 3-6 days per week. I am thinking of changing that a bit, though. I plan on cutting back on cardio to twice per week, and adding weight training 2-3 times per week. I really don't want to add a lot of muscle, I just want to maybe tone up a bit and get some definition.
I will post my weight every wednesday. This past Wednesday I weighed-in at 165, which was the same as the week before. I am down 10 pounds since mid-June. I weighed 225 3 1/2 years ago, which is when I started low-carbing. I have been almost completely carnivorous since March of 2006.
So, that is where I have been and how I got here. Mostly I'll just be posting whatever I happen to be thinking about on any given day. It may or may not be diet or exercise related. That explains the name of my journal. We will see where the Bus will take me. Enjoy the ride!

I ran the equivalent of a half-marathon on my treadmill today-13.1 miles. This was in a show of support for Heather, who ran a REAL half marathon today. Heather Rocks!!!
That's all for today....so far, anyway.

Thanks Jessica. I am feeling really good. If the weight training does anything for me, I'll be sure to post more hot, sweaty photos in maybe 3-6 months.

The legs are feeling better today. I think one or two more days off should do it. Have you ever had something really good happen and you just wanted to tell everybody about it? Well, something like that happened to me last night. I can't tell you about it though.....well, I could, but then I'd have to kill you. I like you all, so we don't want that. Sorry for the tease, but I just had so say something, even though I said nothing at all. Are you all sufficiently confused? There is one person who knows about this, but they are sworn to secrecy. I am having pork ribs and steak tonight. Slow cooking the ribs all day, and finishing them on the grill. Steak will be raw.
There, was that random enough for you?
|
Bobi
|
Yup, very random, indeed. I'm glad that something good happened to you last night, even though it's not known what. It's good enough to know that you are feeling good.

Dean

And, we have just the right person... with just the right instruments in her toy box!

Five to one, baby

Gonna make it, baby

Wednesday, August 16
I weighed 165 again this morning...same as last week. I checked my bodyfat % with mybodycomp.com. I came in at 14.5%. I'm not really sure how accurate it is. When I was at 175, I came in at 15.5%. Seems like 10 pounds should have moved it more than that, but then again, maybe the 15.5% wasn't accurate. Whatever. I'm not overly concerned about it. Started running again today. I did 4 miles. I had a few bites of grilled zuchini last night with my pork ribs and raw steak. That is usually about as "bad" as I get.
|
jeff
|
Almost forgot to talk about my treadmill half-marothon. I wanted to wait a few days, so Heather could get the attention she deserves. This was always about her, not me or anybody else. I finished 13.1 miles in 2:00:42. Too bad I didn't break the 2 hour barrier. Next time I'll know to go out a little faster in the beginning. Next time??? Based on my time, I would have finished 245th out of 418 males.

Had a great day. Mowed the lawn, that's about 75 minutes of low intensity cardio. Right after that I got on the treadmill for a 5 mile run. Then I spent the rest of the afternoon lounging near/in the pool, drinking a few cold ones. It's only a kiddie pool, but it's a big kiddie pool. It's round, 18 feet across and 4 feet deep. The weather was gorgeous-about 80 degrees, lots of sun, and low humidity. No "free" drinks today, they all counted. For dinner I had about a pound of deer tenderloin. It tasted ok, but there was not a speck of fat on it, and it was a little tough, compared to beef. I drenched it in butter.

Yes... it was a beautiful day down here, too. Seems the heat wave has subsided (hopefully for good). I was actually able to get to the park, and get back into exercise! That felt great.

Lots of energy is a good sign. I spent 75 minutes mowing my lawn and then immediatley jumped on the treadmill for a 5 mile jog. It seemed like no more effort than a walk in the park.

My 7 yr. old daughter forced me to eat some peanuts the other day while playing "house" with her. Last night I had a few bites of zuchini and summer squash. Other than that, I've been good. Well, except for the over-indulgance in wine whichever night that was. I've been keeping up with the running, so I think that takes care of any minor indescretions in what I eat.
I weighed 165 this morning, so I lost the pound that I gained last week. Planning a family vacation to the Phoenix area in late October. I am so looking forward to that.

Ran about 3.5 miles today. Had beef for every meal today. Breakfast and lunch were raw tenderloin, dinner was some cooked beef at work. Better than nothing, I guess. I gotta tell you, though. After eating that cooked meat, it felt like a freaking rock sitting in my stomach.
Edit to add one glass of cabernet sauvignon.

Darn. I love the sweet stuff, but I pretty much knew I couldn't have it! I'm kind of naive when it comes to wine, as I didn't start drinking it until I left my now ex-husband a year and a half ago. (He didn't 'allow' me to drink! I'm making up for it now!) What about Reisling? Is that a dry wine? I love that stuff.
I can relate to the cooked meat, although I'm not brave enough yet to try the raw stuff. I do like a medium-rare steak, however. I ate some roasted chicken the other night, and I could still taste it when I burped the next day!
Anyway, enough of my rambling on! It sounds as if you are doing great! Keep up the good work!

CarolAnn, Rieslings tend to be sweet. There are some that are not too bad, though. Look for something with at least 12% alcohol content. This means that most of the sugar has been fermented out and converted to alcohol. Truly dry wines will be at least 13%-14% alcohol. This means virtually all of the sugar has been fermented out. Some other alternatives might be to try a Pinot Grigio or a Sauvignon Blanc. They tend to be very dry, but are what I call "fruity", so they give the impression of sweetnes, without the sugar. Try a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. They have incredible flavors.....like nothing else you've ever had.
Keep the questions coming.....I love talking about wine.
|
CarolAnn
|
Thanks, jeff. Higher alcohol content. . .hmmm. . . I like the sound of that already!!! I am going to go on a wine shopping spree today.
Oh, and another thing I meant to ask you. I've read some articles that claim drinking alcohol can stall weight loss, as your body would burn off the alcohol first. Do you think that is true? I like to have some (I'm talking wine, here. . .uh. . .I think! ) every now and then, but I don't want to feel as if I'm hurting my progress.
|
Dean
|
Hey, jeff... got some questions for ya.
Like you, I have gotten to within 5-10% of my ideal weight. My waist size is down to 30" and my body composition is also similar to yours. IMO, I think at this point, we both need to work on building our upper body. How to do that is going to be tricky.
I'm currently looking into carb loading, but am not real comfortable with eating all those carbs. I am afraid of having carb withdrawals, and other issues. Have you been doing upper body resistance training? I remember once, you said you did not do lower body resistance. I may cut that out as well, just to save time, since I do like to walk so much, and I have really nice muscles in my legs already.
This is what I now need to focus on... shifting body composition. This does get tricky, though. Was just wanting to get your feedback on this, since we are similar in age, body comp, and eating styles... except the alcohol, and the dairy, which I can't seem to do... and don't mind avoiding... more money for meat.
Was wondering if you had gotten into the whole building thing yet? And, if so, what your experiences with it have been on VLC.
Wanna be my body recomposition/building buddy?

CarolAnn, some people claim alcohol does stall them. I never had a problem with it. I think it's a very individual thing.
|
jeff
|
| Quote: | | Wanna be my body recomposition/building buddy? |
Sure, Dean. I'll be your buddy in this. To this point, I haven't really done much work with weights. I keep talking about it, but I also keep putting it off. I don't want to abandon cardio completely, so I will be doing a combination of both. As for carb-loading, not for me. I just don't think I need it. I think it would do more harm than good. Ok, let's start pumping some iron!!!
|
Dean
|
Yah... OK, jeff... let's get ripped!
I have mixed feelings about carb cycling too. I would rather forgo that for the moment. I think it may do more harm than good, as you say. And, I sure don't want to put back on all the fat I just lost!
I too will NEVER give up cardio. I love walking... and especially backpacking. The fall months are coming, and I will be out all I can doing that! I can't wait!
I have access to a nice gym at the university. Free weights, etc. I can also use my bowflex. I was thinking about doing just one day a week, like Sundays... and only upper body. Then, rest on Mondays, do light cardio on Tuesdays, then rest again on Wednesdays. I have no time to do anything on Mondays and Wednesdays except tons of classes from early to late... so, that should be good resting days for me.
What do you think of this plan? And, what kind of plan are you thinking of doing?
|
CarolAnn

Dean, I think your plan sounds great. Mine will probably be somewhat less structured. My work schedule varies somewhat from week to week, so the days that work out for me to exercise will vary. I plan on lifting 2-3 times per week.....strictly upper body, along with some ab work.....geez, I hate ab work. Cardio will be at least 3 times per week. Some days will be cardio, some days will be lifting, some days may be both.....and some days I will sit on my ass and drink wine!!! Balance!

CarolAnn, I have to add one thought to my statement about higher alcohol content=a drier wine. This does not apply to Port. Ports are typically 18-20% alcohol, but are very sweet. I won't get into the details of it here. Just trust me on this. Cheers!

Yes, that's what I love about this place. I'll have to choose my words a bit more carefully in the future. |
Nah, Jeff...just let it all hang out!!!

I am going to start lifting and working on my abs as soon as I get myself in an exercise routine. Keeping it as simple as possible or else I will find excuses to avoid it.

It's my favorite white wine. Incredible flavors.

Heather, so glad you are going to join us!
Yes... I want to keep it simple too. Want to start with a few exercises on my bowflex (only upper body to start). Keep doing cardio, and then tweak things from there. I have already maxed out much of the lower body stuff on my bowflex anyway. I have access to a gym at my university, so I might start doing a few exercises there eventually. I will post in my journal the exercises and sets/reps I do.

I ran 2 miles on the treadmill today, then walked for a couple of minutes for my cool-down. Then I did some lifting.
3 sets of bench presses
3 sets of curls
3 sets of crunches(geez, I hate crunches)
3 sets of flys

Looks like you're off to a good start, Jeff! What weights are you using right now? Make sure to record it, even if you don't post it. You'll be amazed with how much strength you'll gain if you stick with it!

Thanks, Alisa. I will keep track of everything.

Jeff, great going on the weightlifting!
I think it's a great supplement to the cardio. Keep it up!
