June 30 Day Very Low Carb Challenge

Here is an initial proposal... if anyone is interested in this. Let's hear from those who are... and what their ideas are on this. We don't have much time to get this together, but, in Dave's honor, I think we should do this! Yup

From June 1 - June 15
Clean cuts of animal flesh, fat, organs (nothing processed)
Eggs
Butter, cream, half & half
Herbs & spices (no salt)
Water, tea, coffee

From June 16 - June 30
Animal flesh, fat, organs (can include bacon, sausage, jerky, and other semi-processed meats)
Eggs
Butter, cream, half & half, cheese, sour cream, cream cheese (any very low carb dairy)
Herbs, spices, salt, coconut oil, mayo, sauces (as long as they are very low carb)
Water, tea, coffee
Manaloa

I'm in. Yup
jeff

This sounds like something I could do. Yup I'm game.
Red

Already eating this way, so I'm in!
Dean

Alright, Red's in too! That's great! Cool

Hey, I've been thinking, since it might be more inclusive for others to join if we expanded the food list and also just made it for the whole 30 days of June, would anyone object to this being the list?

Animal flesh, fat, organs (can include bacon, sausage, jerky, and other semi-processed meats)
Eggs
Butter, cream, half & half, cheese, sour cream, cream cheese (any very low carb dairy)
Herbs, spices, salt, coconut oil/milk, mayo, sauces (as long as they are very low carb)
Very low carb veggies and berries
Water, tea, coffee

I think the four of us have already been eating this way for the last couple months, but perhaps others have as well. And, I think more people could follow this, and, while it might encourage us to continue to stick to our diets, it could also encourage others to join us in getting on a diet they can stick to.

And... are there any additions or subtractions to/from this list that anyone wants to see before Friday gets here?

Please post 'em soon!

Thanks.

Sunny
Manaloa

chocolate?
Specifically unsweetened chocolate?
Dean

That's sorta like an herb, right? It's from cocoa, right? I've never used it, but have used carob. I don't know how carby either of them are. But, if it's very low carb, and it's like a seed or an herb, it's no worse than coffee beans (which is a berry, actually)... so, I'd say no problem. But, again, I don't know much about it. Does anyone else? Sounds pretty harmless, actually. And a nice treat, too.
mae_west

Can i join?

I really need to get back to basics. I did a meat and egg fast for about 6 days once, but then failure to plan caused failure.

I will be watching you "pros" for tips and tricks. I have one dozen farm fresh extra large eggs in my fridge. The trick is to not eat bacon for a couple of weeks (or these awesome smokies I have).

Can I have my very low carb berries in the form of wine? Actually, wine is lower carb than berries, because all the sugar gets fermented out. Wink Wine

Why did I KNOW you were gonna ask this? I should work for the psychic hotline! Wow

Mae

Mae,

Why don't you join us for this Challenge? I'll tell ya the best trick is to only eat plain meat and water for as long as you can. After that, the spices you use will seem like sugar coating on your food! It's true. I did that for half of April, and have been VLC ever since. Only very few veggies, almost none. I love the way I eat now. I include a bit of cheese and coffee, so I get some "treats". Others use things like wine, but we won't even go there... I think I hear that phone ringing again... Shock
Jaime

What about lard and fish/seafood?
Jaime

You *know* he is going to drink it anyway, no matter what you say. LOL.

ROTFL

Rather predictable, wasn't it? LOL Yup Wine
Dean

Jaime wrote:

Since lard is animal fat (pig fat), no problem. Fish/seafood... they are animals, so yes.

And wine comes from grapes, not berries! LOL

But, we'll have to let Red decide this one... or we should let Dave decide, actually! Yup
Jaime

Personally *I* think you outta make him go cold turkey. Devil
Jaime

If no one objects, with the exception of a few vegetables I'm going to eat today to avoid tossing them out, I am going to start this challenge today. I'd just like to get into that mentality today that I *am* on an eating challenge.

I'm also going to start a journal later today to track my food intake over the month of June.
Manaloa

Yeah, I'm going to start today too. I have to be at work today from 8am until 7:30pm tonight, so I might just IF through most of the day.
jeff

NO!!! Don't leave it up to Dave! Wow LOL Dean, I realilze wine comes from grapes, but if I'm not mistaken, grapes are a type of berry. Either way, in a dry wine all of the sugar is fermented out anyways, so the carb count is very low. Wink
Red

Personally, if wine is allowed, then it doesn't make it much of a challenge, now does it? It's more just a list of what you eat already. LOL It should probably involve giving something up. And unsweetened chocolate doesn't really happen too often unless some kind of artificial sweetner is involved, which probably should not be included, if this is to be a real challenge. If you're using it in a mole sauce or a bit of cocoa powder in a savoury sauce, then it's probably OK. But used in the context of a low-carb dessert, it could lead to a binge spiral for someone who is already suseptible to binges for emotional reasons, like Dave. I would suggest that Dave also avoid dairy and berries/fruits/tomatoes/vegetables, as it sounds like they might be a trigger for him. I say whatever works for you that keeps you dedicated to VLC for the long term is a good thing. If it means choosing a bowl of strawberries with cream over a big slab of chocolate cake, then that's a good thing, too.

And yes IIRC from botany class a grape is a berry.

Well, "cups of Splenda and Carbquik" are VLC too... so is heroin, the last time I checked the label. Roll Eyes

Seriously, I agree with Red. How is this a "challenge" if you aren't giving up a thing. Think how much us carb addicts give up when we go on these challenges. This might be a good way to see if you need some rehab, jeff. Wink

And, on the trigger foods... again, I agree with Red, here. If a certain food is included that is gonna make it harder to resist carb binging, then it actually should be omitted for that reason. I can speak from experience. I have had almost no cravings for donuts and other junk over the last two months. I attribute this to first going totally clean during the first half of April, eating only plain meat and drinking only ice water. Then, when I did add things back, I was careful not to start eating things like fruit, etc. I have not even added back smoothies or custard yet, so I haven't even had any berries or coconut milk. I only made guacamole once and don't really desire it. I have had zero cravings for any vegetation. Mushrooms sauteed in butter and put in those pizza omelets is about the only veggies I care to do.

That being said, it is important to note that I probably could never have done this without my daily dose of 20oz of good java with half & half. If I didn't have that one treat, who knows if I could have gone this long without breaking down. I was craving sweets real bad back in mid-April, and the java/cream worked wonders on those cravings. So, it is very important to determine what "treats" will keep you from binging, and what "treats" will cause you to binge. Deviled eggs or chicken hot wings might do the trick... or smoothies, etc.

Remember, this is about getting into a lifestyle of WOE (way of eating / way of exercise). These challenges are just ways to kick start that process and to discover what one needs to get there. I am so encouraged that I am getting there, finally. It is a process that takes a long time. I went YEARS trying to quit smoking before I actually did. I have gone almost 6 years without smoking, and don't ever think about it. That feels wonderful. There are people who have adopted low carb healthy eating and exercise patterns, and while they may screw up a little here and there, it is so powerfully engrained in them that they would never just totally abandon this lifestyle for the inevitable deathstyle that so many people have in this modern highly processed world. The time and effort it takes to get to that point varies with different individuals. Some people give up smoking very easily, while others, like me, have to go through living hell to do it. My point is ANY lifestyle change CAN BE DONE. It's just up to one's desire to actually do it. It takes work.

So, Dave. Get your ass into this challenge, buddy! It will only get better the more times you try! Yup
jeff

I guess I'm out then.
Dean

Wait a minute... back when there was no wine on the list, you said:

jeff wrote:

So, how come you're out?

Besides, Dave has not said that wine can't be added to the list... or has he? Confused

It's up to Dave! Wink

Where the HELL is our Dave?! LOL
Manaloa

LOL Alright alright, no chocolate! I had it last night to get it out of my system so that I wouldn't think about it all month.
jeff

I just changed my mind. I don't really feel the need to give anything up. I have achieved all my weight loss and health & fitness goals. I have been maintaining for the better part of a year and have settled quite nicely into my lifestyle.
Dean

Lucky you! Sounds like some kinda retirement! LOL

No... if that's where you're at, great! I'm glad for ya. I don't think I will ever be able to just get into "maintenance". I guess I'd miss the excitement of "development". But, that's just me... I’m extremely "project oriented". If I aint “workin' on somethin’”, I aint happy. Wink

I guess it's kinda like an "active retirement" LOL Maintenance is still work. Have to be careful not to slip up and go back to the old ways, which I did a couple of years ago and gained some weight back. I guess the potential is always there, although I seem to have a pretty good grip on things right now.

I do want to continue to improve my physical conditioning. I find it very easy to not keep up with the exercise if I'm not careful. I have to be very vigilant about that. A couple of days off can easily turn into days and months.
Bets

Maybe Dave's one of those guys who does better with a Goal instead of a Challenge. We probably all have a long term goal so it might not seem so motivating to set short term goals, but that might work better for some people. Some short term goals could be losing X amount of pounds, do Y amount of exercise, cutting back Z amount of carbs, finding X amount of supporting research, from that research finding Y amount of good things to add to the diet or exercise program, etc. Then you don't feel defeated before you start. Then at the end of the month or whatever, you can look back, review, and then come up with a new goal.

Bets
Dean

That's a good point, Bets.
jeff

How is everybody doing 5 days in?
Dean

No problems here. How 'bout the rest of ya?
Manaloa

Great! Lost another couple of lbs.
jeff

Glad to hear it, guys!
Dean

Good for you! Cool
mae_west

Down 2 pounds...could be the 45 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of stretching yesterday...I think the shock of the exercise knocked the weight off...oh, well, whatever works!
I will try again today.

Is it okay to do that recipe where you coat your pork chops in mayo and crushed pork rinds? Or should i skip the rinds?

Mae
jeff

I"m not part of the challenge, but I'd think the pork rinds are legal. They are an animal product after all. I think the mayo might be ok too. If not, just coat your pork chops in an egg wash before coating with the pork rinds.
mae_west

I opted for the mayo/parmesan topping for pork loin chops. Man that is some good stuff!

Only other food was 2 eggs + mayo made into egg salad and a stringable cheese and a pepperoni stick. It was a really busy day, and mistakes were made....
jeff

I"ve used the parmesan coating for chicken....very tasty.
mae_west

I must have been on drugs when I was shopping! I thought I bought beef blade steak but I bought pork blade steak.

I will brown it in a frying pan with some seasonings and then bake it in beef broth (homemade- no crap added), with some onion chunks. I won't eat the onion because I don't really like it, but I like to cook with them.

I hope this meets the criteria. I was stumped for how to cook these after eating pork chops with mayo and parm cheese topping all week! I am down 4 pounds this week. I think it is from the ice cream (mega fat) and the cardio.
Dean

Boy did THAT conjure up some distant memories! LOL Like buying strawberries in some supermarket one summer in San Rafael. Wow Mega dosing. There was a beach and a woman and a whole bunch of other things that I won't go into here... Wink

Hey, Mae... you are doing super in the Challenge! WTG! Keep up the good work! Cool
Rich

I have moved my challange to here since it is more appropriate.

Is anyone else still doing this??
Dean

Rich,

We'll let you finish off these "three strange days" of June. You will end up winning the June Challenge. I may be wrong, but I suspect everyone else has bailed! LOL
Jaime

I don't even remember if I was IN the June challenge. LOL
Rich

I will carry the torch Woo Hoo , to make it fair I will go into the end of July.
mae_west

i'm still here!!!

Hi all!

I did not bail- I was at a conference for the past week. It was very hard to stay on plan and I admit to eating carby foods. I did stick to the plan for many meals, even when people stared at me and said "you don't eat bread?????". I was eating their burger patties and processed cheese alot, and tried to stay away from crap.
On the banquet night I went back for more rare roast beef when all around were women eating mostly veggies and pasta salads. They were " you like meat.....". I said I tried vegetarian but I prefer carnivore. That got a few blank stares - after all, I work in health care. Might as well have smoked a big cigar while drinking whiskey straight and babysitting infants. Crazeeee....

I want to do the carry over challenge to the end of July. I really need it!

I know the feeling to as I work in the Fitness biz. Glad to have the company, I am doing the second half version. Be 2 weeks tommorrow since I started.
mae_west

I want to do the second half version as well, just for the extra options. I have read a recipe for a devilled egg filling that uses cream cheese and bacon as well as the usual mayo and also adds some horseradish and worcestershire sauce. May give it a try soon....
Dean

Mae,

I hope you post that recipe in the Egg Forum once you've tried it. Sounds incredible! Cool
