June Carnivore ContestJune Carnivore Contest
All foods should be as natural, fresh, and whole as possible. Animal fat should be kept high, and carbs kept very low. Toxic treats should be kept to a minimum. Figure out what you can handle. Figure out what you need. Set your own goals and be honest with yourself.
Allowed
* any part of any animal (including processed meat)
* eggs
* VLC dairy
* VLC vegetation
* olive/nut oil
* VLC condiments, seasoning
* VLC beverages
* ANY other necessary supplements or additions you need
>>> To get any points you must have only what's Allowed. <<<
If you have something not allowed you are out for the day, you get zero points.
If you water fast for the entire day, you get 1 point. This is NOT to encourage starvation practices.
Set your own personal daily goal and give yourself a point for the day if you stick to what you want to eat to be healthy on your chosen way of carnivorous eating.
Have fun and work on changing your eating habits for the better!

I like the new rules. It's based more on following what is (hopefully) right for YOU, and not just somewhat arbitrary rules that may or may not be right for everybody.

Thanks, Kim. Nice to see you back as well.
Question.
Do you guys wanna do a 5 point scale rating deal or just do a 1 or 0 point thing if you eat on plan or not?
Please let me know.
Thanks.

I like the 5 point plan but am open to anything.

I meant I liked the 5 point scale.

OK, Kristelle. I guess the 5 point scale sounds right for this one.
BTW, sounds like you and Kim should visit the back of the Bus more often.

Not that this is really necessary for this Contest, but, I'm gonna post the current eating plan I've fallen into over the last couple weeks (minus some junk I'm no longer doing ). This plan seems to be working really well for me, and I'm wanting to stick to it for June, since I think it is the best for me at this time. After going through three and a half months of Contests where I experimented on eliminating various non-animal foods, I became very aware of those toxic treats I could tolerate and at what levels I could handle them. Despite some widespread wartime rumors to the contrary, that was the real purpose of those Contests, so I'm glad I got so much useful feedback from them.
Feel free to post what you plan to stick to for June, if you are so inclined.
I'm still gonna get some raw eggs/meat and organs into my diet, as well as IF on a regular basis, which works so well for me and really makes me feel great. I'll be shooting for these items in June:
Allowed
* any part of any animal (including processed meat)
The only processed meat I'm allowing is pepperoni and Canadian bacon in pizza omelets. Besides that, I prefer clean cuts of meat, especially very fatty stuff. I'm hopelessly addicted to ground beef at this time. Read on to figure out why.
* eggs
I'm even back to deviled eggs. eggs so much.
* VLC dairy
I hope I can become a shareholder of jeff's company, since I've brought back some cow pus. I know I need to limit it, and, therefore have incorporated the methods to do just that into my WOE.
butter - only on/in foods. no more straight eating it for "snacks".
cream - only in coffee. yah, java is back in small amounts, as usual. no more drinking cream, though, like eggnog.
cheese - only on burgers and fried eggs and in omelets, including my pizza omelets. this will really help me limit the amount.
This amount of dairy seems to be working great for me. I had to figure out a way to limit the amount is all. I know this is gonna work great to do just that. Anyway, I hope the WI legislature takes all this into consideration.
* VLC vegetation
The only vegetation I want in my diet are mushies, and only on burgers and steaks, and in omelets or beef roast/stew. Although, lately, some magic mushrooms sure would have hit the spot. I will also use black olives in my pizza omelets. That's it. This is really just garnishes for flavor, as Bear said. Fruits and veggies are not necessary for me. I'd rather put my toxic treat allowance on other items. It's really all about keeping toxic treats to a reasonable level. Just enough for mental sanity, but, not enough to jeopardize physical health. Also, there are those who may feel that certain non-animal foods may be beneficial to consume, for medicinal or supplemental purposes or otherwise. Finding that balance is the real trick to Carnivore eating. I envy those who can get away with no non-animal foods, but, I realize most people cannot do that. That does not mean that we should simply dismiss this WOE as undoable. It is very doable. Just takes some work to figure it out is all.
* olive/nut oil
Don't need any of this stuff. I'm so glad I gave up the coconut. It's nothing I really wanted. Was just trying to figure out what toxic treats I could and could not live without. Nuts are certainly not anything I need. I'll get my high fat ratios from animal foods, including some dairy, but, mostly fatty cuts of meat.
* VLC condiments, seasoning
For me, Bear, and I'd suspect a whole bunch of people, this seems to be the cornerstone to keeping carnivorous. I've brought back a few condiments lately, and I'm lovin' it.
mayo - only on fried eggs, burgers, and fish/fowl or in deviled eggs.
yellow mustard - only in deviled eggs.
spicy brown mustard - only on burgers.
bbq sauce - only on burgers and beef ribs.
red hot sauce - cut with butter for chicken hot wings or on pork.
Chinese vinegars/oils - for dipping pork belly into.
That's about it for condiments. It's just a way to spice up meat and eggs. I have not had a problem with any of it. No bad chemical reactions at all from any condiments or seasoning. I feel sorry for those who do have those reactions. I don't think I could handle eating such plain tasting food.
* VLC beverages
coffee - don't drink much java at all. never did. found that I really didn't need it so much as a pick up, but, more as a treat. and, with cream, it's just that.
wine - after going a long time without it, it was nice to bring this back into my life. to quote one of our carnivore comrades, us monkeys like to get stoned.
Here's to Monk E on his undercover mission to the wasteland.

That sounds great, Dean, and is very similar to the WOE that I have fallen into over the past couple of years. I do a little more cheese than you, and surely more coffee....but other than that, we are almost identical in our eating.
I'll see what I can do about letting you back into jeff's Dairy Company as a shareholder. I'll have to run it by the board of directors.
I'm curious.....have you experienced that famous "dairy bloat" since adding back cheese and cream?

Yah, Bob, I thought it was just in the back of the Bus that this happened, but, it seems that there is just no escaping it.
| jeff wrote: | | I'm curious.....have you experienced that famous "dairy bloat" since adding back cheese and cream? |
You know, that is one of the reasons I came up with a method to limit my dairy consumption. Through those previous Contests, I discovered that I must do that. I also discovered that I did NOT want to fully eliminate it from my WOE. Hence, the compromise of limiting my consumption. It's working out great, with no bloat!
Now, take that news to the shareholders, and see if you can get that restraining order lifted while you're at it.

Are you saying you're ok as long as you keep the amounts fairly small?
I suppose if one is succeptible to dairy bloat, then it would be proportional to the amount of dairy consumed.

Yah, dairy is definitely one of those things you have to experiment with. Sorta like an adolescent experiments with hallucinogens. I remember doing waaayyy too much at once on more than one occasion.

Are you both needing salt - not for taste (Bear); to digest protein and fat (stomach acid) or cramps...Would / could you eat cheese with out salt...
You are all talking about "needing" this and that; a lot of it is to keep you "happy". We need salt to live; Bear and many others say that meat has it's natural salt - some add and others say it is toxic.

I'm on the fence about salt. I rarely add salt, but I do eat some salty foods.....bacon, sausage, occasional nuts, cheese. I don't have a problem with digestion, but I do get leg cramps sometimes.
|
Kristelle
|
No leg cramps but adding iodized salt definetly helps with energy. More in my NEW journal...
|
Dean
|
Yah, I've been using iodized sea salt for some time now, and the dizziness and leg cramps have subsided. I think the small amount I do is fine.
And, yes, I seem to "need" certain foods to help keep me "happy". All part of being an acculturated carnivore, I suppose.
Of course, coffee and wine, along with Kool-Aid and "other things" at the back of the Bus, seem to help out as well.
Here today, gone tomorrow.
Remember what the dormouse said.

I was having problems as I like salt but felt it was keeping my blood pressure up. I switched to sea salt (french gray) and it is really good, supposedly has a ton of minerals, and my blood pressure has been going down since I started using it.

Are VLC fruits like tomatoes or sweet peppers allowed? What about a little lemon?
|
Dean

Any VLC vegetation is allowed.
And, if there is anything else that people think should be added, please speak up!
This is about doing your own personal take on carnivore eating.

Lex also mentioned leg cramps in the night (plus other problems) and that he needed to add a little salt. You are eating cheese and other things with salt and still have leg cramps - digestion is no problem.
I had a few days with a little salt and didn't feel to good with it (pressure, aggressive, water) but then again I can get cramps in the night. This alkaline ionized water gives my body pressure in the form of energy so that eating or just the thought of a little salt is not on!
A new member of this forum told me that salt is no good (raw paleo); his digestion is perfect and he has no cramps - I don't believe that we are all different - other animals eating a natural diet look and eat the same! Humans don't eat the same and all look different...and all have more, little or no problems.

How often would you recommend doing This?
A couple of weeks ago I was reading some of Bear's words of wisdom, and regarding leg cramps, he said they are most likely not caused by any deficiency, but by lack of stretching. I know I don't stretch as much as I should, with the running I do. I do stretch before running, but I usually forget to stretch afterwards. And my legs almost always feel tight, as though they need a good stretching. Maybe I should try to get myself to try to start stretching several times per day. It certainly can't hurt.
|
Jessica
|
You can do it every night if you want. Epson Salts are pretty cheap. I do them here and there when I feel particularly fatigued, and it really seems to help. You'd probably notice after one. Very nice and soothing after a long stressful day, too.
Let me know how it works.

5 points for today.
Coffee with cream first thing. IF'd all day. Just finished my one meal of ground beef, cooked, with salt, pepper, mushies, pepper jack cheese, mayo, bbq sauce. HUGE very fatty burger. I've been eating these things a lot lately. I'm gonna make some chicken hot wings tonight, and I'm sure I will try some when they come out of the oven. RedHot sauce with butter will be used for these. Other than that, I'm enjoying some white wine. Our double agent would be proud.
I love the IFing. Makes me feel so good. I don't really even need the java, but, I think it keeps me happy so I don't crave carbs. That has always worked wonders for me. I went without it for quite a long time, recently, but, it's a nice treat to have. That I must admit. Since I don't ever snack on anything, I think this keeps me sane. Like the wine, it is one of those things that I could do without, but, over time, I tend to get really bored. Hey, I guess Eades would call me a hedonist.
That's OK. I don't mind being one. It's sorta fun, ya know?
|
Nikki
|
All right lets do teams. I'm in.
My goal is to stay to the less than 10g / day pretty close to the May contest (or at least my commitment to the may contest).
I will still have heavy cream with my coffee/egg shakes in the morning but will limit my cheese to only that which is mixed into a burger or added to a simple romaine salad occasionally. I really did have a bad reaction to the salad last night
Anyway that really means:
all kinds of meat (mostly clean cuts except for pepperoni and italian sausage).
vlc veggies only very rarely
butter, cream with a little cheese used in cooking
raw something at least once a day
vlc condiments - that to me is Red Hot and Mayo
Best of luck to everyone.

Long time no see! I have been off experimenting on my own and actually had some success losing weight by cycling my fat levels. Check the OP. This Contest just got much easier. It's about YOU. You are a carnivore and must decide what YOU need to add to your diet. If you are adding what you want/need and are happy with it, then give yourself a point for that day. If you screw up on any given day, then don't give yourself a point. It's really that simple.
Let's not complicate this WOE. It's not a religion, it's a biological assumption, based in some pretty conclusive evidence about evolution.
Kim said she'll be around later. Haven't heard from Jude. So, this looks pretty even for now. We can always adjust things if we need to in the future, but, today is June 5, so maybe not.
Good luck everybody!

Ok, I've read through the posts (and sorry, late as usual) -- so somebody help me to sort out where the 5 points referred to elsewhere comes in? Also, what's an IF? Intermitten Fasting?
I'm working my way to a process that looks a lot like Dean's, especially where the wine is concerned. A little VLC nut butter seems to be necessary for me now and again, but for the most part, I've been VLC for the last 2 weeks, and in particular for these first days of June. Soon's I figure out the point thing (1 for sticking, 1 for water fasting, 0 for falling off, where's the five come in?)...I'll tot up the first week...
Just as a point of interest, today was a butter-smeared "egg-cheese bready-thingy" for brunch my beloved java with cream, 10-12 bacon wrapped scallops and a portobello/VLCveggies "pie" with a slice of fontina melted overtop. Filtered water (must drink more water).
Popped an eye-of-round roast rolled in Montreal Steak Spice into the oven for tomorrow...nice and rare the way I like it, thin slices across the grain with a sprinkle of Maldon sea salt and fresh ground papper. Probably some mayonnaise dip for the fat boost (still haven't found a chunk of horseradish root for the mayo, maybe a bit of wasabi in there will work?). Might whip up a batch of compound butter with the basil sitting in a pot on my counter...
|
Dean
|
Jude,
The OP (rules) got changed just yesterday.
Nobody was really "rating" themselves with the 5 point deal, so, to simplify things, it is, as you say, 1 point for stickin' to your individual plan of carnivorous eating, and 0 points for not doing so.
You were so late, you got taken out of the Contest, but, as soon as someone who is even later than you shows up, then we can add ya back in.
Keep track of your points for this month, and we can hopefully work ya into a team here shortly.
DOES ANYONE ELSE WANNA JOIN THIS CONTEST?

Unless someone objects, I guess the best thing to do will be to have an uneven number of contestants on teams, that way, anyone that wants to join in will be able to. Since the Tigers need some help, Jude can join them.
Jude, I'm not sure how many points you have at this point, so feel free to add your points in. I'm sure the Tigers will appreciate that immensely.

Average, Mean, Median...any of those will probably work with this sample size! and I agree, that way the team membership Count doesn't matter so much. Tigers, eh? Durn, I finally found me a lion image I borrow for the interim...No matter, Tigers it is! Hi, fellow Tigers!
Points for me on my personal pyramid (NO grains | no to low LC nuts & fruits weekends only [DH proximity ] and in very small amounts | moderate VLC dairy | moderate deeply colored and VLC veg especially dark greens | LOTS of eggs and meats), LC to VLC overall) for June, up to and including yesterday: 6! Yeah!
I'll be adding food journaling (I need to do this to keep me objective) and some caloric restriction as I go on; my metabolism has changed bigtime since last I successfully LC'd. Also, I've really dialed down the sweeteners, particularly the AS, and am focusing my {personal chef} R & D on the natural sweeteners and synergies. The majority of sweets are going to be necessary taste testing.

Oh, BTW, I had a working lunch yesterday in a sushi restaurant, so tried some sashimi I'd never had before (usually stick to salmon and tuna belly); this was a Sashimi Cocktail (yes, in a martini glass ) and it was a little bit of everything, including some unidentifiable, and octopus and scallops, as well as sake, toro and hamachi.
Amazing textures, some I'm just not into so much! Live and learn! ...and my fave, a Negitoro Cone, basically tuna belly (toro) and scallion tartare, rolled in a sheet of the sushi seaweed, some daikon shreds and a bit of cucumber instead of the rice. Num.

Once you guys master addition, perhaps we can move on to division.
It's good that you have an official scorekeeper.

Zero for me yesterday, Lobster tails in butter grilled by the pool and Margaritas!! Hey it was Saturday nite!!
|
jeff
|
I love margaritas!! Especially on a hot day. I haven't had one in years, though.
I'll have to concoct a low carb margarita recipe.

I don't think there is any such thing that will taste as good as the real carb loaded thing. Once a week isn't bad though. I'm really good all other times.

You're probably right, Bibi. But it will be fun experimenting.
|
Bobi
|
Well, let me know if you do. However, Dennis, SIL, makes them at our house with real strawberries, etc. I'm too lazy!

Dean

Bobi, if you only drink them on Saturdays, and only a certain amount, this could be part of your personal plan. You get so few carbs in anyway, so why not? Live a little.
