Just now boarding...

Greetings everyone!  I'm Moon, and happy to be climbing aboard the bus with all you nice folks.  I hope you won't mind if my lunchboxes occasionally have a bit of greenery mixed in with all the tasty meatstuffs...something about that (butter-soaked) broccoli that I just can't manage to part with yet. Wink

A little about me: I come to the Magic Bus from a mostly Paleo background. In January of 2007 I weighed about 260 lbs.  At Christmas I'd gone home and found out that my mom was prediabetic, and that was the wakeup call that inspired me to change.  A few days after New Year's I resolved to change the way I ate and to start exercising, and so that's what I did.  I embraced tons of cardio and paleo eating, first just mostly cutting out "white foods" - and refining my diet more and more along the way to where I am now, not eating any grains, sugar or starches [bar the very occasional carrot].  I've lost about 120 lbs, but spent much of my time feeling somewhat starving, since my approach to the paleo lifestyle was still low-calorie (especially given the amount of exercise I was doing), fairly lowfat and high (veggie) carb.  I don't want to starve anymore.

I've run a couple of marathons and assorted shorter races, and have started training for my 3rd marathon (in October).  The more reading I've done on nutrition and health, the more I've been convinced that I need to embrace dietary fat, which is what brought me here! (Realizing, of course, that this mentality is somewhat contra to the over-cardio aspects of marathon training...not the best choice I could make healthwise, but hey, I like the bling :)  I'm curious to see how VLC will fit into my endurance training, and hope that I'll be able to adapt fairly soon and achieve performance near as good (or better?) than I couold do on my medium carb regimine.

I've also been involved in some recent metabolic experimentation of my own (including a 6000 calorie meat-and-fat binge on Sunday, where net carbs were <35...I was up 5 lbs the next day, but back down to the same pre-binge weight today, without any caloric restriction yesterday.)  I still haven't found the right balance of fat/protein/carb yet that will let me go through the day without feeling hungry (some of this may be mental/emotional as residual effects of the past year+ of dieting, but I suspect I may have issues with leptin as well), but that's what experimentation is for, right?  I hem and haw over IF and have tried it every so often the past couple of months, but I'm not so sure it's right for me, considering my sordid history with self-starvation and caloric over-restriction for the activity level I had.  Anyway, I'm up about 5lbs from the goal weight I initially achieved, which is ideally where I'd like to return to, and I'd like to shed some bodyfat% along the way, so I'm going to keep trying different things to see what will work best for me.  Mostly, though, I just want to eat what's best for my health, which I'm more and more convinced is meat and fat (with maybe the occasional stray veggie to keep from getting bored...hey, give the newbie a break, okay? Smile)

Anyway, I'm glad to be here and look forward to meeting all of you!  The threads I've read so far have been highly enlightening, and I'm yearning to learn ever more about the topic of ZC/VLC and living in carnivory.

Finally taking my seat, and hoping someone will take pity and sit next to the New Girl,
-Moon

Welcome aboard, Moon.  I'm pretty sure you now hold the record for the longest introduction here on the Magic Bus.  LOL   Congrats on your huge weight loss.  That is truly impressive.

If I could give you any advice, it would be this:

Eat lots of fat, few carbs, and keep exercising!!!
Moon

Thanks, Jeff!  Any records I can beat or prizes I can win are good by me! ;)

Moon- Congrats on the 120 pound loss.  What a journey.  Thanks for sharing your story.

I wish you the best with finding the right combination for you now.  It seems we are always learning about what works for us.
Heather

Nice to meet you! Welcome

It's nice to have another runner aboard the bus.
Moon

Thanks guys, it's fun to be here!  I'm going Bonkers (in a good way, I think, lol) getting caught up on all the old threads and stickies lurking around, but hey, knowing is half the battle, right?
jeff

That's great, Moon.  There's lots of good stuff in some of those old threads and stickies.
