Day 3 is going great! I'm on track for well over 5000 calories. It's amazing the things I can accomplish when Mrs. L is at work. I even got the outside Christmas lights working!

Looking back at my old experiments I noticed that I was only usinig about .25 to .5 cups of cream per day most of the time. This time around I will probably average 1-2 cups. I'm just wondering how many carbs, if any, are actually in this stuff. I know Red thinks there must be some, otherwise it would be butter. But Dean has promised me that his company has taken all carbs out of their heavy whipping cream. We will see, I guess.

Yes, I'm going to check after one week. If I'm up, the cream would be the likely culprit. I love the cream though, 'cause it's such an easy way to get alot of calories very easily. On the other hand, I am leaving the wine alone, which I did not do before. So, it could be that without the wine, I can handle the few extra carbs that might be in the cream.

I know that's what Fitday says. But depending on the brand, it can vary some. The stuff I use says 100% of the calories come from fat. Now, I understand that there can be some fudging because of rounding. However, the stuff we use at the restaurant where I work has 60 calories, but ony 50 are from fat. The rest is divided between protein and fat. In these situations, I'm more likely to go with what it says on the package versus what Fitday says.
|
jeff
|
Ok, I just checked with calorieking.com. You can look up individual brands there. They also have an "average of all brands". The average is .4g carb per tablespoon. The individual brands seem to range from 0-.6g per tabelspoon. Draw your own conclusions I guess.

These ribs are boneless.....just long slabs of meat. I just sear them in a hot pan. I eat them very rare.

Day 7 was 3990 calories, and I managed 88% fat. I had coffee, butter, heavy whipping cream, bacon, eggs fried in butter, very rare ground beef, and some co-jack cheese.
For the first week I consumed an excess 15575 calories. If there is no metabolic advantage to this way of eating, I should have gained 4.45 pounds of fat.
My weight this morning was 169. Exactly the same as last saturday morning. I will continue for another 3 weeks, although I really don't know why the next 3 weeks should be any different than the first. It will mostly be a test of my ability to continue eating this way.

Ah, another experiment! Good work Jeff, your dedication is inspiring. Very interested in the final results. A question, do you do any exercise and if so are you including the cals lost? Also is it alot easier to get enough calories now that you're using whipping cream as opposed to butter in your previous experiment?

No exercise is allowed in this metabolic ward. The heavy whipping cream does make it alot easier to get the extra calories in. It is such a dense form of pure fat, and for me, much easier to down in large quantities than butter is.

Hell no!!! This whole things was your idea, and you had to talk me into it. I'll cut you a deal, though. How about we shorten it to 2 weeks? Red did it for a whole month, and we saw the results. I am on the same track as she was, as I was the other 2 times I did similar experiments. Unless somebody knows of a reason why fat would start being stored only after 2 or 3 weeks, but not during the first 2. It's not like the fat is just floating around in my blood, waiting to be stored. And even if it was, it would be showing up on the scale, right?

It began to do that, but I only had it in the pan for a couple of minutes. The bit that did liquify I just poured out of the pan and onto my seared ribeye, so none got wasted.

I get my beef suet from a local butcher (at Fareway), they just grind it up for me without putting anything extra in it. I'm 5 lbs of it tomorrow!! I would imagine the texture was like the fat on the side of a steak after warming it up?

Very similar. But.....I don't know.....there was just somethiing about this stuff that seemed a tiny but different. Maybe it's just the fact that it wasn't attached to any meat.

I have no doubt that the reason you were so sick with that cold is because your amino acid pool had to create/direct proteins to digestion, leaving your defense system vulnerable. That metabolic ward is brutal, huh?

Way to go Jeff. Great experiment. One question. I was talking to someone at work about your experiment and she wondered if someone who is used to working out and and has quite a bit of muscle would continue to burn calories at the same rate as when they were working out even though they have stopped exercising for a certain time period after they stop working out. Confusing, I know. She was thinking that maybe if someone works out on a regular basis, it would take a few weeks for their metabolism to slow down and and wondered if that is why you hadn't gained any weight yet. But if you continued this way of eating say for 2 months, that eventually your metabolism would fall to what you say is your base of 2200 (?) and then you would start to gain.

I hate to say "I told you so"... So, I won't!
And, I think Kim has a good point there, jeff. I think you should continue this Experiment for at least two more months... with one change. I think you should up your calories to about 6,000 a day.

I really don't think so. If my body is burning through over 4000 calories per day now, wouldn't I have been emaciated before I started this, when I was consuming 2500-2800 calories per day? And remember, Red did the same experiment with the same results. And I'm assuming she doesn't have near the muscle mass that I do. (no offense intended, Red.)

And you be quiet there in the back of the Bus! I'll do 6,000 calories a day for 3 months when you do it.
I knew all along this would be tough to do. That is why I was so reluctant to do it in the first place.

But if you continued this way of eating say for 2 months, that eventually your metabolism would fall to what you say is your base of 2200 (?) and then you would start to gain.

yeah, but I did it for like, what, 9 days or so. I have no muscle to speak of and I'm overweight by about at least fifty pounds. I didn't exercise during my part in the ward and I think I lost around three lbs. Besides IF Jeff's "metabolism" was at 4000 calories while he's working out, then wouldn't he have been "losing" weight before he started in the ward. Because I'm pretty sure he did not eat that many calories before he started in the ward.

Just want to clarify so I can better explain this to my coworker. Before your experiment Jeff, were you only eating about 2200 cal. before with exercise? So this would mean if you weren't exercising, your calorie requirement would actually drop even lower?

Not quite. I normally eat about 2500-2800 calories per day. I got the 2200 using the results of several online metabolism calculators, using a sedentary lifestyle for my activity level. This seems about right.

Day 18 was 3386 calories and 83% fat. I made Bear's chicken with butter and cream cheese recipe for dinner. I had 5 chicken thighs. Alot of the butter and cream cheese ends up running out, so I didn't count most of what I actually used. It's still in the pan, though. If I decide to drink it, I'll come back and make adjustments. I also had 2 Miller Genuine Draft Light beers. 2.4g carb each.

So, jeff, who's sneaking booze in to you? Where's Alex at? She isn't taking this security thing very seriously, now is she.
Just don't tell AC... he will say we aren't running a "tightly controlled" ward, here. Hey, the jokes on him, right? We know exactly what we're doin' on the Bus!

I much prefer real beer, but I just can't spare the carbs. Especially now that I'm in this metabolic ward thing. Even when I'm not in here, I never do real beer anymore. Maybe I should just stick to scotch, Red?

I've got a better idea. Since we've lost our security expert, and AC is now on the loose (that's a scary thought, huh? ), why don't we just cruise this Bus to every Metabolic Ward in the world and free all the patients. They can jump on the Bus and do these experiments the Magic way.

Don't start spreading rumours about me, or you will be in big trouble, just wait until BJ's back to discuss your punishment, or did you really think this would be easily forgotten

Boy, this place sure isn't what it used to be, how about some KoolAid for everyone, Shawn?
I need something to relax anyway .

I just contacted Shawn, and she informed me that she is busy making another batch of Kool-Aid. Apparently, AC thought the last batch was his "glucose juice", and he injected a "very large" amount into... well, his escape was inevitable, it seems... he went straight through the wall. That also explains the reports coming in from Dr Mike, about the naked, roller-skating man with the Santa Claus cap...
BTW, AC didn't use up all the Kool-Aid (just most of it). What he left of that last batch was consumed by jeff and Heather... in my journal! They're still looking for that key...
