Quitting DairyI had some heavy cream yesterday, I need to get away from the dairy.

Heather. You can do this!
Question.
Do you still drink coffee? And, if so, do you put cream in your coffee?
The ONLY way I could quit dairy, was to quit coffee. I HAD to have cream in my coffee. The combination of cream and coffee was starting to give me really bad GI issues. My gut has been healing from getting away from foods that were hurting it. I now am much more sensitive to things like coffee and dairy and even night shades and stuff. I have really been fine with no coffee and cream, cuz of the lack of these GI problems. I love not having those problems anymore... a lot more than I loved my coffee and cream.

How's this going, Heather?

Coconut milk is yummy in coffee ;) Good fats too.
I am dairy-free, and I found I had to give up about half of my enormous tea consumption. Otherwise I'd be going through like three cans of coconut milk a day. I have learned to love herbal teas and discovered some really good ones! And you can combine different ones to get different flavours.
I miss lattes though

I quit dairy before with all sorts of teas. I'm only occasionally drinking cream in my coffee. I'm not doing so good today, I will really have to focus on this one. Talk about addictive stuff. I never knew it could be this hard to quit.

It's super-addictive. My downfall was cheese.
Once you go without for a week, you're good - I was amazed how quickly the cravings went away once I stopped eating any. You can do it!

Hi, I quit grains 2 years ago & dairy 1 1/2 years ago - I still dream of consuming these items, especially dairy. Just the other week I seriously considered buying / having some cream cheese - did I really forget what dairy does to me? Muscle cramps, constipation, mucus / congestion, vague aches & pains, vision issues....... It certainly is addictive.

It's likely not permanent, but I think I'm going to give dairy free a try for a few weeks. I need to clean out my system, as I've been cheating more and more often. Meat, eggs and water it is!

I've actually gone back to consuming hot pepper jack cheese. That stuff is so good on fried eggs. I have been melting half a stick of butter in a skillet, then putting four eggs in there, and once I flip them, I put thick slices of this great cheese on each egg. I eat this gooey mess with tons of mayo. I've been doing this every day for the last week! I'm on a fat fest myself!

Sounds delilcious. I love pepperjack cheese. And butter. And eggs.

Dairy free isn't going so hot! So far today, I've had half and half in my coffee and a piece of havarti!
I was away from home and there were no food choices, so cheese and a coffee didn't seem as harmful as a muffin... But still. I need to focus!
I feel fine, at least. No bad symptoms, that I've noticed. Maybe I haven't been off dairy long enough for it to make a difference and to get a bad feeling from relapsing.

Hi Red, I very rarely have dairy. The rare occasions are usually when it is in small amounts when I eat out. Example being I had tilipia with crab at Bravo last week, and it probably had some in it but I didn't know, just because it had a small amount of sauce that looked like it had it in it. I drink my coffee black, but actually i'm getting burned out on coffee anyway, so I drink stuff like green tea, which I drink either plain or with a pinch of stevia and vanilla extract.
Believe me, I was the worst one to have to give up dairy, but just have a small amount now and then, like in your coffee. Just now and then, have some. Eventually you'll forget it more and more. Or just have it now and then and don't worry about it. Unless you're living on it, and/or have bad reactions to it (It makes congested and sinus problematic) I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Yeah, a touch in my coffee (which I only have on weekends) shouldn't really be a big issue - I was just shocked at how quickly I fell off the wagon! I don't get congestion from it - I'm just hoping dairy-free will make the last 15 lbs I have to lose a bit easier to shed. I have no idea if it will work. If I don't notice a positive difference, then I won't kill myself trying to avoid dairy - why bother, when I love it? But I have to give it a proper try before I give up on it.
I'm also going to start doing HIIT, on top of my regular lifting exercises, which will probably help. I'm actually pretty OK with my weight (maybe I'll post pictures) and if I knew I will never gain another pound, I'd be happy where I am at 146 lbs.

OK, I've been dairy free since yesterday. It's a bit challenging, but not horrible. I'm having cravings for cream right now. Whipped with a touch of vanilla. I've always enjoyed black coffee - I only ever really have cream in it if I'm craving carbs, because it's more substantial... more like... dessert. But now, no cream! Arrgh!
But yeah, I think it will be good for me. Typically, I'd have some cream right now, which would add another couple hundred calories onto my day, but without it, my calories will be a bit lower. I do feel like I'm missing something, though, so I hope I don't replace it with other stuff. It doesn't help that I'm also still craving carbs from my Chinese food incident on Sunday night...

I sometimes use coffee with cream as my dessert. I find it very satisfying. Luckily, the extra calories don't seem to bother me......of course, I'm maintaining, not losing.

I had been off dairy all last month and then I had some cream cheese last Sunday, out of desperation. I was craving sugar bad but aimed for the cream cheese instead. My weight jumped up 6 lbs the next day and I have pimples on my cheeks. Talk about dairy hell. I am still recovering from that. I am absolutely convinced now that I cannot tolerate dairy at all, even once.
Just say NO to cream cheese!

I LOVE the pepper jack cheese I've been eating with hamburgers and eggs. I used to really love cheese in my SAD days. But... I am starting to get sinus issues. Scratchy eyes, and the whole bit. I am not sure if it's the cheese or not, but it could be.
The other thing... I was scoping the ingredients on the label of this cheese, and there is a TON of sodium (and some other chemical additives, preservatives, etc.). I think ALL dairy (even butter, which I also LOVE) is NOT going to be part of my April Challenge. In May I will add it back in, and then see what happens.

It seems for some people, the less dairy they consume, the less tolerant the become of it.

Well, it is true that if there is no reason for your genes to code for the lactase enzyme to break down lactose, then you will have less and less of that the longer you go without dairy. Also, the proteins in dairy may run up against your immune system, and if your immune system is not "exposed" to these foreign proteins, perhaps they won't be building the antigens to take care of them.
Yesterday I had a really bad reaction to eating cheese, but so far today I have not had the same reaction to some cheese I ate. However, my vivid dreams/nightmares have returned. Back in December I was eating tons of cheese, and boy did I have vivid dreams! I am certain that it is cuz I was in REM sleep and not into the deeper sleep that I should have gone into. Or, perhaps, as Heather alluded to, I had entered "Dairy Hell"!

As far as dairy is concerned, I consider it unnecessary. Whenever I ingest any of it I absolutely cannot breathe at night.
I prefer to breath more then I miss butter and yogurt.
I'm also not coughing up plegm during the day.

Dean, the reason the cheese gives you nightmares is from the tyramine in it. It's known to cause sleep disturbances and night terrors in sensitive people. It's not necessarily a casein or lactose intolerance, but an effect of the natural amines in cheese. You'll probably notice you also get headaches and crankiness and possibly skin disturbances, like eczema from cheese. That's from the amines, too.

Thanks, Red.
Yah... come to think of it, I have had a couple bad headaches over the last few days. I was thinking it was just sugar withdrawals, but it could have been the cheese. I'm almost out of this hot pepper cheese that I love so much, and don't plan on getting anymore. I'm almost out of butter too (have less than a pound). I don't plan to buy any more, since April is coming!

OK. It's obvious dairy is not going to work for me.
I was fine eating some cheese earlier in the day, but then tonight I had some more on some eggs I fried in butter. Now I can't breathe! My sinuses are stuffed up, my nose is starting to run, and my eyes are starting to itch. Who needs this crap!
I wish I could toss this one pound block of Wisconsin cheese up to jeff! It is hard for me to throw it out, but I may have to give it away. It's just not worth it to have these reactions. And, I can't imagine what kinda dreams I'm gonna have tonight!

Have you tried fresh cream and butter without eating cheese? Fresh cream is much less reactive than cheese. Especially if the cheese has hot peppers in it, which is like a reaction cocktail!

Red,
I gave up cream when I gave up coffee at the first of this year. I don't plan to go back to that ever. I love not having to mess with getting coffee every morning as if my life depended on it. Since I IF the first part of every day, I can just get up and get on with the day right away, since I don't need to mess with eating or drinking (or preparing) anything. I don't even drink water for awhile after getting up. I absolutely love the freedom I feel in not having to mess with that. Plus, my body feels so much better when it's able to come out of rest state while not being bothered with anything coming into it. And, it helps me to cut down on calories and keep my hunger and blood sugar totally under control for the rest of the day. I'd recommend this regimen to anyone.
As far as the dairy. I'm through. I don't know about butter just yet, but aside from that, I have no desire to ever do any dairy again. I've always had bad reactions to it. Whether it be sinus problems, GI problems, sleep problems, bloating, stalls, you name it... it just isn't worth it. I love chocolate cream pie too, but I'm trying to avoid all carbs like the plague, so dairy is the same... avoid it like the plague. It's gonna work for me, I know it is!
The truth is, the only reason I ever mess with cheese is to give myself some sort of treat to get back on zero carb. I've gone over a week now, very close to zero carb, and it's time to stop the dairy. Next time I end up screwing up and eating sugar, and then need to get back on track, I'm gonna have to figure out another treat to eat. Dairy won't be an option. I hate being stuffed up!

It sucks, eh? I tried some butter today and am already stuffed up.
I'm glad I only bought a half pound so it is back to olive oil for my fat source.

Jaime,
How 'bout just extra animal fat for your fat source? Do you eat pork? There's loads of fat on pork. You can cook eggs in pork fat (lard). You should look around for a pig farmer or a meat processor that processes pork, and get some pork fat form them. It's very easy to render. Or you could get beef fat from any meat counter. They just give the stuff away.
You can render fat very easily on the stove or in the oven. I'm gonna render a whole bunch of beef fat this week. I just dice up the fat in 1" squares and put a bunch of them in a very large skillet, and turn the gas flame as low as possible on my stove top. It takes several hours to render it all down, but the whole place smells like heaven from all that wonderful animal fat rendering.
When you dice up the fat, just make sure there are no meat particles on the cubes you end up using. There will invariably be some cubes with meat on 'em. You can save those to feed to your cats. I add a few of these cubes into Klondike's deer chunks, and he loves 'em!

Dean I rarely, if ever, eat pork. My mom used to serve it often when I was a child and overcooked it to the point of shoe leather so it is basically a turn off for me if I have to eat it I dont mind ground pork for some reason.
With that said, there is one store I know of where I might be able to get some fat. Most of the big supermarkets around me have thier meat trucked in from the big processing plants but this one store I know about still butchers the meat in-store. I'll find out. It cannot hurt to ask.
Of course I could just buy some fatty pork, cut the fat off and save and use that for myself and feed Sylvester and Winks the meat portion.

That's Klondike! He's the Bus mascot!
He and his sibs were raised on a strict raw meat diet. He now eats nothing but deer chunks. He is so soft and healthy... and huge! He is nearly 20 lbs.

Jaime,
Ask all the stores. The grocery store near me has their meat trucked in, but they still cut off the excess fat (cuz, as we all know, it's so bad for everyone ). So, you'd be surprised how many meat counters at any store have fat to just give away. Check it out.

Huge, but not fat, right?
My Ruth won't touch raw meat, for some reason. Even raw liver... I thought was a law for cats to love raw liver. She just turns her nose up at it. She loves loves loves cooked meat, though. I have to give her little nibbles whenever I'm cooking or she gets cranky. Ground beef is probably her favourite, next to fish. She could stand to lose a few pounds around her belly.

Yah, Klondike is just right... not overweight at all. But, that's cuz I don't overfeed him. A cat will get fat, even if they are just eating meat, if you overfeed them. I have seen this many times. I feed Klondike about 2 oz or so three times a day. He would prefer 30 times a day, but I don't give into his cries. He wolfs down the deer I give him in less than 30 seconds.
