The Surfergirl JournalHello Everyone.
My grandfather was a Florida cattle rancher and meat was all we ate. I was strong, and skinny.
I started adulthood as a vegetarian, and things started to change. I changed to atkins, but found it to be to carby still. So after finding the MBT Forum and Zeroing in on Health Forum, I have gone cold turkey to being a carnivore full time.
I am making my Fitday public to you in case I am working too much to post here. See my signature line below for that link.
My Life has changed. Weight falls off, My sinuses have cleared for good, I have more energy than ever, and I'm finally not feeling that bad feeling I get when my blood sugar drops after eating carbs.
Today so far: Steak, Water.
Later some decaf coffee with heavy cream, but only drink half. Or decaf earl grey tea, iced. Stay tuned.

After a loooong stall with no cheats, my stall is broken!
As of today: weight loss of 23.6 lbs.
Still to go: 55 lbs
I finally used Bear' Chicken recipe (thanks yOu, MetalMamma, Jeff) and it is my fave right now. Yum.
Bought a crock pot and enjoying using it! Still using the grill for kebabs and the oven to get that crisp skin and crunchy fat cap on meats that I love.
Please note. Fitday shows me that I am "30" BMI and about to cross over to the 20's. YAY. My goal BMI is "20".
Going to the mall today for a cute dress. Then to a movie and then to have a "Kabbalah in the Kitchen" cooking class with the Rabbi's wife tonight that will be fun!

Congrats on breaking the stall! Yes, I love Bear's chicken recipe. One of my fav's.
|
kateryna

Yayy!!! Stall is gone. Time to celebrate.

surfergirl

Thanks to both of you, the weight loss is slower now. Keeping with the carnivore way of eating.

Surfergirl:
Regarding books, there is so much information out there and it is all useful even if you don't agree with everything they say.
I have read all books written by:
Robert Atkins
Drs. Eades
Reuben (the Maker's Diet)
J. Mercola
R. Rosedale
G. Taubes
B. Groves
Anthony Colpo
Malcolm Kendrick
Schwarzbein
Allan and Lutz - Life Without Bread
Saly Fallon - Nourishing Traditions
Connie Bennett - Sugar Shock
and many others that I can't recall at the moment.
Some of the above are still afraid of fat. This is not a complete list but there are a lot of good books out there.
|
surfergirl
|
Life without bread sounds great! I am going to get that from amazon, and then the rest also!
Thanks for the list. I am printing it out!
|

Although it seems like none of those people put all the pieces together, we can learn from all of them.

You are so right Jeff, and I will use them to get "our" ideas out of.
Katie, so far I ordered Life Without Bread, Perused a copy of Maker's Diet, Read articles by and about Schwarzbein, and googled Rosedale and got interesting articles.
I am learning a lot.

Hi everyone. So far so good on the Yom Kippur fasting today. Service this morning was great in the temple. I go back at 5pm. Can eat at 7:20pm.
I have put Stew Beef, seasoning, 2 slices red onion, and a few mushrooms to flavor it, in the crock pot. it looked yummy even raw. I will just eat the meat, Esp. since I'm in a stall again. I am not cheating. Haven't taken motrin for a couple days, and I was on my TOM, so maybe my stall will be over.
Been doing great on the no alcohol promise to myself. Last wine was just this past Aug. 26, I do not miss the redness and swelling it caused at all. Or the weight gain. It just isn't worth the problem.
|
kateryna
|
Hope you have a good holiday and the intermittant fasting will do your body good
Surfergirl, remember your queston asking me if there was something that broke my stall. Well I've been going over my food journals and noticed something that I paid no attention to.
On September 17th I added a tablespoon of coconut oil when frying my meat almost every day. I use butter and coconut oil now. Well by September 20th my stall broke and I've been losing ever since. I'm definitely not going to stop using it I've also increased my egg consumption. I'm not allergic to them and they keep me satisfied just like meat.
Anyway, those are my observations for what they are worth.
|
surfergirl
|
That is great news! I have both in my kitchen, and will start to use the coconut oil more.
And........I am losing a little! I woke up weighing less, even after the big beef meal last night.
So maybe it is good to fast during the day sometimes and eat one meal at night?
My next experiment is when I stall to eat a meat dinner only. Hmmm.
|

Glad to hear you're doing well. Good luck with the IF.

I really am too. Long stall. Thanks for the IF information! I'm trying to get this butt down to a manageable size.

Here's to the butt getting down to a reasonable size
You're doing great Surfergirl. It will drop in it's own time when it's ready (keep repeating to self over and over again, that's what I do)

Hey, surfergirl,
How is everything going with the IFing and the cooking? Your dishes always sound so wonderful.
Life Without Bread is a great book, isn't it?
|
surfergirl
|
I haven't finished that book yet, got sidetracked with crock pot cooking. I haven't put IF into practice as much as I would like yet, been hungry lately.
Beef so far is my fave. I found a great deal on lamb chops today too.
So sorry to hear about your dad. Good thoughts from me coming your way.
|
kateryna
|
Hey Surfergirl, I see that scale moving downwards again. Hurray!
I see you're fasting a bit. I eat only twice a day. Light at lunch and heavier at dinner, about 19 hours between dinner and lunch the next day. If I stayed at home I'd probably eat once a day but I can't usually eat a lot in one sitting so twice daily is best for me.

I'm catching on to your little tricks HEEEE HEEEE! Yes IF works! The scale is showing me low numbers! Swim Fishy Swim! Swim to 120 lbs yay!
Hey everyone! I had a niece today! 9 lbs 5 ozs.
Not a typo. She's a big girl. Samantha Michelle! First girl born in 23 years in my family!
|
y0u
|
CONGRATS on the niece!!!
I eat twice a day as well..biggest meal is the first one around 1 or 2 pm after all my exercise and errands..etc... then a small meal after work late..
I wait as long as I can during the day before I eat..
|
kateryna
|
Congratulations on the brand new niece Surfergirl
|
surfergirl
|
Thanks for the congrats on Samantha.
I have my most luck eating once a day in evening, but find it difficult, and end up with a couple bites of meat early on, because I get that low blood sugar feeling and hunger. That's why I was thinking I would be a good candidate for Metformin.
I just went over the weekend and got some great Indian dry spices from our Indian-British Grocery here. The spices add some variation to flavor in my meats, esp in the crockpot, and helps my blood sugar feel more stable.
I found a great deal on lamb chops at Henry's Market (California Health-Organic Food Grocery) and need to go back and get more. They were beautiful red and nicely marbled. Cooked up like a dream. Tender, juicy and seared on the outside with a bit of crushed fresh mint leaves and gee. The BF's Hebrew teacher was over and raved how great they were, since the BF is vegetarian.
|
surfergirl

I ran out of decaf tea and coffee a couple days ago, and therefore used some with caffeine. So I have been having some burning neck pain and nervousness due to it. As of today I am going to the store and buying decaf. Feeling a bit better. Less stressed/hurting this morning. IF-ing yesterday was a success. Big Rib-eye steak for dinner was joyful to eat and I was hungry. Very little weight loss, but is was loss. I will go for some macchaca eggs this morning.
|
surfergirl
|
Quick question....I was wondering if anyone had any luck frying low carb chicken. Do you use that low carb flour or cornstarch? What and where do I get it? Should I not have this until I lose 20 more lbs. anyway? I have lost 27 lbs so far, so good.

|
kateryna
|
I tryed the grated parmezan cheese coating but it didn't work for me.
Then I fried my plain uncoated chicken with skin on in a combo of coconut oil and butter and the skin was so crispy and crunchy I died and went to heaven. So that's how I have it now if I can find chicken pieces with skin still on them. I haven't tried wings though.
|
surfergirl
|
Ok. Great Katie! So half coconut oil, half butter? Do you cover because of spatter or do this uncovered? I think it's your mix of oils that make this cruncy. I used peanut oil before and it did not turn out well and my kitchen was spatterd with the oil. Can't wait to try this.
Also notice *TA DA* Today I weighed in at 170.8-almost to the 160's mark, that is if it stays! I had a couple sin bites last night of chocolate mousse tart, and I hope I don't have delayed weight reaction to that poison tomorrow.
|
jeff
|
Never tried it myself, but I've heard of using crushed pork rinds as a coating for fried chicken.
|
MetalMama
|
What about bacon grease?
I've done both Parmesan and pork rinds - they are both decent...but not necessarily worth the work in my opinion - I'd rather have Bear's chicken. Spatchcocked chicken (aka chicken under a brick) is really good too.
|
surfergirl
|
Thanks Jeff and MM...those are great ideas.
Tell me more about this chicken under a brick thing, how do I go about this?

Yes I am Making this dish! As soon as I get a brick....like yOu I shall bor-row one from somewhere. Looked like some saffron was on that chicken in the recipe provided. Did anyone else notice? That would make it so much more delicious! the crackly skin, Yum!

When my father travels to Turkey..he buys a giant bag of it. It is not as good as Spanish but you just use twice as much...but I have cups of it so I can use it liberally.

Good Morning Surfergirl!
I LOVE the idea of a carrot cake flavoring!! YUM!!
WOW!! :) I do order some Yummy coffee syrups from www.DaVincigourmet.com .
I am getting ready to buy my Peppermint SF syrup for the season & always have the Dulche de Leche & Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough syrup on hand.
I have a standard Bunn coffeemaker - My Mom always had one & the coffee is consistent. It has copper tubing in it, hard water can be a pain - but hubby put in a reverse osmosis water system, we have minimal build-up.
Hope it's beautiful where you are today in California!
It's 70 degrees here! Take care! ~Cheryl
PS - Turkey...Saffron...
|
surfergirl
|
Cheryl you are sooo lucky the have the reverse osmosis system.
How do the sugar free davinci syrups taste? I will let you know if the flavorings I ordered taste great or nasty. I was trying to avoid sugar and don't like the taste of fake sweeteners. These are worth a try, and they are zero carb. I loved coffee mate blueberry flavor before I was zero-carb, now I can't even find it in a store at all anyway.
|
surfergirl

Oh..note to self I need to order good quality saffron.

That's what happens when you eat the real human diet Surfergirl
|
surfergirl

This diet is the best. Nothing has ever worked before. Starving, soup diets, vegetarianism, juice diet, and the all-time consuming raw food diet!
I even got the weight loss shots and was under a doctor's supervision with a 500 calorie a day diet and gained weight from it!
One little trip on the bus and a sip of koolaid , no other diet mattered anymore, my eyes are opened, and I am a newer thinner version of my self.

Glad you found this way of eating Surfergirl as am I. Took me a while to get around to finding it but I knew it was out there somewhere.

You too Cheryl,
I'm going to a guitar performance tonight in San Juan Capistrano. It should be fun. I will brown some chicken then slow cook it for chicken cacciatore with a little tomato sauce, garlic, and a bay leaf from my huge bay tree.
Great news Everyone! My daughter is coming to visit from college December 15-20, and she is bringing a wonderful young man she has been dating to meet me! YAY! What I know about him, I love. The photos show him as a handsome, tall man. Egyptian descent, Traditional American-Muslim family, intelligent, will be graduating college in May, going on to medical school then. President of the student government. Should be able to eat our Jewish food just fine, no pork, and I will study up on Egyptian Muslim food too.
I am very excited!

Hi everyone. Check this out. I went to a small ethnic market nearby for chicken with skin for my famous Chicken soup. Look what I found. They actually had two upright rotisseries like I remember from my childhood going to Tarpon Springs. So I had to have some! One was chicken, one was beef, and they told me they even have lamb sometimes! Here is what it looked like:
|
jeff
|
Yum!!!
|
surfergirl
|
Yep....Got two pounds of the meat. Free Tahini sauce. Extra meat for free in a tin, and I got asked out by the butcher. He said I was bea-u-ti-ful.
The meat-delish. Nice and fatty and crispy in some parts. Nice seasoning it was cooked with. Not salty, kinda allspice tasting.
I wish I had one of these rotisseries in my house! I would if the BF wasn't vegetarian! He feigns sickness at the smell of beef cooking.

Ok, I am still sick, and feel lousy, while I was out yesterday here in Laguna, some dude saw me walk by and said "hey sexy woman"!
What's up with this? I looked around and it was me he was talking about. Ok That's two guys in a row commenting. I say I continue to follow this way of life, because it works.
Can't wait til I'm feeling better. Maybe I will look better.
I couldn't eat dinner tonight. Can't smell anything or taste anything. I'm sure this will pass soon, I've been sick a week. It was warm today, but is COLD outside now.
Going to bed. I started a fire in the fireplace. My little sheltie pup is here to keep me warm too. He cuddled up on the down comforter by my feet. Awww

Thanks to you both. I just woke up but not feeling better. Head achy and ill feeling. Threw up a little last night, and BF cleaned it up and put a trash can beside me. At least I'm in the 168's now though. Not how I planned to do it.
I really feel like having a big rib eye, so maybe this is a good sign.
The BF told me to take the day off, he is my boss, so I will. He won't even be at the main office today anyway, since he has court appearances near one of the satellite offices an hour away, and clients to see there after. His son is off college classes today, so he has volunteered legal assistance today, since I cook for him and do so much to help and support him. Good to know people care.
Surf doggie dog and I are on our own. Rib eye for two. maybe harrissa hot sauce and horseradish so I can breathe.
