Weight Training

I am on week 7 of resistance weight training with dumb bells.  I  do this M-W-F and do 100 push-ups (from the knees up) first, then lift. I do the following exercises.

Chest=Flys, flat chest press

Shoulder= front raises, lateral raises

Back=single arm row

Biceps=concentration curls

Triceps=overhead extentions, tricep kickbacks

I started with 10# weights, 2 sets of 10 reps.  Graduated to 15# dumb bells over the weeks..now I am doing 3 sets of 15 reps with 20# dumb bells.  Last week(Wednesday,Friday) I did fine with this..today I can barely do my workout..no energy...I did the push-ups but really had to eek out the reps..and could only do 10 reps..whats up with this?

I have experienced some rapid weight loss recently..is my body just hanging onto energy?

I know nothing about resistance training but it seems to be working for yOu. Congrats!

I need to find some exercises I can do at home and I'm working on that.

I am certainly not at your level of weights or experience but I also had this happen one day - three weeks into my weight training. It was as if it was the first day again and I could barely get through any exercise.

I don't know what causes it, but am very curious as well. I chalked it up to some kind of muscle fatigue.

Hopefully someone will have an answer for you.

It could just be your body saying "I need to rest!".

I did my push-ups and weight training today..Really pushed myself to do 3 sets of 15 reps for all exercises with 20# dumb bells...and I did it..

I guess my body was just really tired...but now it's back!!

Hopefully can graduate to 25# dumb bells in a few weeks.

I am still using 20# dumb bells, 3 sets of 15 reps...and it's still quite hard for me.  Should I get 25# ones and do less reps?  It seems like i should be moving to heavier weights faster.

Opinions?

There are many who would tell you that if yOu can do 15 reps, then you're not using enough weight.

I heard that too Jeff but i thought that was for body building not strength training..but I may as well give the 25#ers a try as soon as I can get a ride to the sporting goods store...

Thanks!

Hey y0u,

Are you doing these reps all at the same time, with a rest in between?

I've downloaded a few programs off the net and bought a book and everything is Supersets - do one exercise than switch to another one, then rest and repeat. It makes me crazy because often I have to completely move my location (from bench to floor etc.). I was thinking...what would be wrong with doing them all together and then moving on to the next exercise...For ex: 15 Chest Flys, 30 sec rest, 15 Chest Flys, 1 min rest, 15 Chest presses 30 sec rest etc.

Is this how y0u do it?

How are y0u handling the 25# weights now?

I've also been thinking about just skipping a set # of reps and going to failure.

Anyway - just curious how you're routine worked. Thanks!

Metalmama..I lift pretty casually.  I am currently doing 2 sets of 10 with the 25# hex's.  I rest 30 seconds to a few minutes inbetween..or however long I feel like it.  I do however do 100 push-ups before I lift weights..so my muscles are already stressed.

I will graduate to 3 sets of  15 reps at some point..but for now 2 sets of 10  is all I can do.  So yes I do lift to failure.  Once I can do 3 sets of 15 easily for a week or two, I go up in weights.

We rock!! Yup
