y0u know you love Disco, admit it!In the spirit of love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpeZk9-s6Hc
Ok I admit it, I love Disco. It motivates me to keep on keepin on.
I am new here, and relatively new to LC/VLC. I started in August of 2008 because I need to lose weight and I have been diagnosed borderline diabetic. I like many women, have pcos and am insulin resistant, I also have high blood pressure. I believe through diet and exercise I can correct all of the above and eventually stop taking BP and Diabetes meds.
I started out at 240 pounds, kinda large for a woman who is 5 foot 7. So far I have lost 20 pounds and 10 inches. My goal is to weigh 150. I am one of those slow losers for the above reasons and also because it has been very hard for me to exercise. But that has been changing lately. Last year I severed my achilles tendon and had it sewn back together, I am now beginning to be able to walk a good distance of up to 4 or 5 miles a few days a week. Before that I broke my other ankle in a hiking accident. (many years before). All seems to be healing quite well, and it's time to get up and move!! I just have to be a little careful. I used to be a long distance cyclist and hope to add some of that back in this summer, in the meantime as soon as the weather permits I will do some 20 mile flat rides.
I started out doing Atkins, and it does work, but I am tending towards a lower carb plan, as I don't lose if I eat any more than 20 carbs. I am conducting my own science experiment right now on myself. I have been eating under 9 total carbs a day, with about 1500-1600 calories, I am on week 3 right now. I am basically doing the old M&E, with a tad of cream in tea. Your gonna have to pry that cream out of my cold dead hands! No cheese, just meat and a bit of spice and herbs and tallow for cooking. On occasion I do mess up, but I am only human.
I am constantly learning, and would welcome any advice or comments from fellow board members...or just drop in and play some disco and have a twirl on the dance floor.
I am not sure how to post a pic on here yet, so the dance floor will have to wait...Once it's here I will hang the disco ball

Welcome. Nice to meet yOu.

Hey look, my first visitor!! Thanks for the welcome Jeff, when is the Chicago marathon? I am originally from the midwest, about 3 hours from Chicago. But now I am a Westcoaster.
I finally got the disco bar put together, here it is...
|
Lynne

aha! you figured out how to post a photo!
so you're going to work two journals now?
anyways, welcome Miss Y0u and i hope you get this down pat.
there's going to be a test in March!

I want that disco in my basement!!!

Jessica, you can use mine anytime you want...just throw some vinyl on the high-fi!
Lynn, I doubt I will list my daily eats in this journal, it would be a bit repeatative. Unless inquiring minds need to know..But right now I have so much time on my hands who knows what will happen?
I am sure I will put a few smatterings of delicious dishes I prepare..you know what a photo buff I am..

The race is August 2. It really looks like alot of fun. It's called the Rock & Roll half marathon. They have bands playing every mile along the course, and then a big post race concert. I haven't seen any of the bands plaing yet, but I think they tend to get pretty good talent.

we'll have to see how hurricane season is in august and if it's feasible to leave town.

Good idea, Lynne. The more the merrier!

Jeff, that sounds more like a party than a marathon, but that is how it should be. I used to do the MS150 every summer with a bunch of friends. It's a 2 day 150 mile bike ride to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis. It always ended up at some great place with kegs of great local beer and bbq. I miss being able to ride 70 or 80 miles in a day...hopefully I can get back to that point, your inspiring me.
So here I am sitting on my ass typing away talking about health, I better get off my ass and get some exercise. It's cold outside but I just gotta do it anyway.
|
y0u
|
I have been wanting sweet things late at night recently. Not sure why, perhaps my lack of alcohol. I have upped my fat lately, not really on purpose, it just happened because of the bone marrow I have been eating. Protein went down because of this, and lo and behold...no more amonia pee smell.
I have about 10 more days of my experiment, and then I will decide which direction to head in, or stay on this path. To try and lower my 30 day average on carbs I have to eat 2.5 or less carbs per day for the next 10 days. That would put me at about 6-7 carbs a day average for 30 days. My first few weeks had some eating out, and a small amount of veggies in a pot roast and some condiments that had some carbs in them.
Whichever path I choose, it will be VLC or ZC. From what I have been reading, that is medically the best thing for someone that is very insulin resistant such as myself.

Yes, y0u do!

Well, in 3 weeks I have lost 10 pounds and 2 inches off my waist. Not too shabby. I am hoping to be under 200 by April 1st. Yeah me!

Thanks for the encouragement guys!!
I am having a crappy ass day..The city cut down my only shade tree in front of my place..it had a big crack down the middle..go ahead..make bad jokes
Oh well...Hopefully they will work with me and plant something there to my liking..
I just cannot eat today.
|
y0u
|
I made bacon grease mayo today..It was really bad, threw it out.
I made EVOO mayo today...it tasted horrid!! Threw that out.. And I have always loved olive oil..Christ..I am part Italian.
I think my taste buds are changing. I have some expeller pressed canola mayo but I hear canola is horrid too because they have to de-odorize it somehow, and what kind of chemical do they do that with?
I really like to make fresh chicken salad with home made mayo and creme fraiche. I can do without the creme fraiche. Mayo dilema here...
I cannot afford macadamia oil..or avocado oil. And I don't want to use heated oils.
Can't a gal just have some fucking decent mayo?
|
Dean
|
y0u are having the same dilemma I've been having for years.
I love deviled eggs , but, I cannot have them anymore, cuz, I finally said goodbye to the mayo. I tried making deviled eggs with sour cream, butter, and I can't remember what else, but, in the end, I just gave up.
I decided to not only give up the mayo, but all condiments. Mainly cuz they are just too expensive for what you get, and also, cuz they usually are either carby and/or they are loaded with other crap.
Now my thing is to use herbs & spices (dry seasoning) to make meat and egg dishes taste wonderful. I've always been very instinctual with seasoning food, so this is a no-brainer. I can keep my carbs way down this way, and still enjoy the flavors of good seasoned meat and eggs. And, of course, starting in one week, I'll also be able to add cheese and butter to meat and eggs, which will help me stay on course even more.
|
y0u
|
Hmm...the ONLY problem I am having with eating 80% fat is that I don't want to sleep, or can't sleep until really late..well actually it's early..like 2:30 am.
I certainly don't have a lack of energy, I do have a lack of an appetite. I suppose I could try and exercise more..now there's an idea. Evening exercise. hmmph..
I suppose I could try reading GCBC....that's so boring it might put me to sleep.
or I could...Take all the doors of their hinges and make beaded curtains out of beer can tabs
or I could put a bar of soap in the microwave and hit the popcorn button
or I could experiment with making custard in the dishwasher..again..
Vicodin? Hmm....that might work..
|
Pooti
|
bwahahahahah y0u crack me up! I wrote this in Dean's Journal.
Mary Enig and Sally Fallon make a mayo that is made from 3 different fats:
extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and sesame oil. But they use lemon.
So you could sub out tarragon or garlic flavored vinegar for the lemon if you want to stay totally purist or you could say screw it and for the couple of tbsps of lemon in the entire batch, your carb count is obscenely low, and maybe try different combos of fats like:
extra virgin olive oil, melted beef fat, clarified butter (more like a hollandaise sauce really)
extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, melted beef fat
that sort of thing...I am gong to try making it this afternoon maybe? In order to try some for dinner. I will let you know how it turns out!
|
y0u
|
Pooti!!! Hello Hello!! Thanks for the mayo info, and yes...please let me know how your mayo turns out, I would be very interested!!
I do use tallow and butter and olive oil...so that would be a perfect mix.
So today I made hot wings...mmmm. I had to use the mayo I had in the frig to make the bleu cheese dip. First cheese/sour cream I have had in 30 days...mmmm.
I used enough butter/bleu cheese dip to make it 77% fat..Woo Hoo!! I'll be eating on these all weekened and into Monday.
|
Dean
|
So, what kind of seasoning do y0u put on those wings?!
I've been using Red Hot sauce, but, since I've given up all condiments and am only going to do dry seasoning (herbs & spices), I will want to make chicken wings using those things. I know about the heroin wings, and will definitely try them, but, was wondering what you or others use for seasoning on these guys.
How do you make the dipping stuff? I may try it, but, once again, am really trying to stick to just meat, eggs, butter, cheese, and dry seasoning. Much simpler and easier to keep carbs super low, while still ENJOYING my food!
Speaking of enjoying food, I will use fresh lemon and lime juices on my fish and such. As Pooti said, screw it. The carbs in dry seasoning and those juices are not going to be worth counting. And, who the hell wants to spend their life inside FitDay all the time!
|
y0u
|
Dean, I made my own seasoning mix and ground it fine in a coffee grinder.(I have one just for spices). I don't have exact amounts but I have a feeling you can figure this out. I have never counted seasonings in Fitday, just eggs, meat and dairy, I'm not THAT crazy.
paprika
tri colored peppercorns
garlic powder
onion powder
cayenne
oregano
celery seed(go light on this)
no salt(salt substitute) it's just potassium, or use real salt
That is just a basic cajun spice rub.
I make a mean jerk seasoning too if you want that.
The dip I made might not suit your dietary needs at the moment. And I am not sure how I will react to it either..we'll see. I used the mayo I had in the frig, at least it's expeller pressed.
1 part mayo (let's see if pootis mayo works out)
1 part sour cream
crumbled gorgonzola or any bleu veined cheese
cracked pepper
a bit of vinegar
cayenne
1 clove fresh garlic minced
IF you can deal with sour cream, you could just use that? Yogurt made with Heavy cream would work too. GAWD..full fat goat yogurt would be killer..with bleu in it..yah..(excuse my orgasm)
I am getting some goat chevre on Monday and I will be experimenting with that. I would prefer to use goat as my sole dairy source for Februarys challenge, but money is an issue for me right now. Perhaps thinning the chevre with something would make a good dipping sauce for wings?
The hot sauce is just louisiana hot sauce and a stick of buttah!
This is the first dairy I have had in a month besides a tiny bit of heavy cream, if I start to gain I will toss it out again.
Hope any of this is helpful.
|
Dean

I think you jinxed me Dean. 1 hour after eating my Dairylicious dip...bad things happened
I'll give it one more go tomorrow with a much smaller amount..

Well..now I just don't feel good at all. Maybe I am getting sick..or the cow pus I ate is slowly killing me. I have a fever and I have been sneezing for an hour. Crud..crappidy cruddidy Boo Hiss!!
I wonder if they make special kool-aid for sick people?
|
Dean
|
I hope y0u are feeling better.
This makes me a bit leery of starting dairy back up on Wednesday. I'm hoping I won't have any bad reactions. My sinuses often give me problems, but, since going to just seasoned meat and water for the last 2.5 months, I have had no sinus problems at all. If my sinuses start bugging me, once I reintroduce the cow pus, I'm gonna have to put it back down in a hurry!
|
y0u
|
I am rethinking cow dairy...gonna have to do a few more tests when I get over this crud.
I will see what goat chevre does to me later this week.
Gonna go curl up on the couch with Athena and Ouzo. They like it when I am sick

ODE TO MY BIG FATTY STEAK
Fatty lumpkin look at me
I eat my fat, I smile with glee
My steak is marbled oh so well
My taste buds, they begin to swell
The fat I eat, it makes me thin
I lose, I lose, my double chin.
|
Dean

I see somebody is feeling a bit better, huh?
Did you find the special Kool-Aid for sick people at the back of the Bus?
Isn't Shawn thoughtful?

Ok, I wasn't hungry until I saw that picture.

Yep...I am a feeling better, not all better but better. I think it has something to do with butter.
My lungs have a bit-0-goo in them, and nice piles of snot are flowing freely forth from my nose. Maybe I can create my own river...?
----->Maybe these guys will come visit me if my river travels far enough<-----
BTW...that was a local steak from a company that my friend ownes called Knee Deep Beef, it is grass fed, free range, and humanely slaughtered...it also retails for about $15. But It was free for me. That one was a bone in NY, she gave me this killer Ribeye for Xmas that was THE best steak I have ever had in my life!! We have some great Buffalo around here as well.
I'll stay out of the grain-fed vrs. grass fed debates in the regular forum, I happen to know the difference, both in taste and ecological impact. Unfortunatly (Dean don't give me shit) I am living on $171 in food stamps a month right now until I can get a job. Paying my huge mortgage seems to be a priority. So I get grass fed when I can, or when nice friends give it to me..
I found the special Kool-Aid.... I may have to go dancing tonight?

Hey there,
Thought I would just say hello seeing as how we are very similar health wise. I also have PCOS and high blood pressure and am VERY insulin resistant. I tried good ole' LC but it wasn't enough to take off any weight so I'm back to the carnivore way to see what happens.
Best of luck to y0u and I'll be following your journey.
BTW, those wings look awesome - what temp do you cook yours at?
|
y0u
|
Metalmama..look in your journal
So I weighed in today, I did not lose or gain. So I have indeed kept off the 10 pounds I lost last month!!! Woo Hoo!. Last month was an experiment for me, I am heading for ZC(which means 5 and under in most circles) for a little while, probably until summer when I grow my own veggies. I ran a monthly average and I will post my stats. This month I am aiming for a little higher animal fat intake, slightly less carbs, less protein. and maybe a few more calories so I can incorporate my upped fat intake. I also am becoming more active so I need the fuel.
Last months daily average stats:
Calories:1,563
Fat: 75%, 133.5 gr
Protein: 23%, 88.3 gr
carbohydrate: 2%, 6.4 gr
This month I am aiming for more like 80% fat, 19% protein, 1% carb, 1700 calories. I am adding in up to 2 oz of goat cheese to the mix and keeping my tablespoon or two of heavy cream for occasional coffee/tea(no cheese on cream days), we'll see how that plays out, if I gain or stall, out it goes.
I am hoping to be in ---->Onederland really soon<----, maybe by the beginning of April.
Hope everyone is having a great Monday!!

so how did the roast taste, y0u?
the wings looked awesome..
you're really into the protein..
and your body is losing the bloat and getting thinner..
your belly must be getting flatter, no?
so was it a bad cold, or dairy that gave you all the goo?
i finished a rib roast today, and just sucking on the bones.
i so feel like my ancestors.
|
Dean
|
| Lynne wrote: | | i so feel like my ancestors. |

Lynne, I think it was MOSTLY a cold, and a little bit of dairy shock. I have adjusted now but I don't eat very much dairy, and I am sticking with goat mostly.
My waist has shrunk, the belly has a long way to go. I carry all extra weight between my boobs and belly, definitly an apple shape. Boobs are shrinking too, not sure I like that as much as my waist shrinking.
On protein, I really don't eat that much at all. I am averaging about 85 grams a day. I could very easily eat more but I want certain ratios for this month. I am a lab monkey.
The roast is amazing, I will eat off that thing for a good 9 or 10 days. Who needs a boyfriend when you have a succulent juicy piece of meat that puts out every time and doesn't talk back... well..I suppose it can't do everything..but it's pretty damn close,

I know if I have just one drink of wine or coffee, I'll be right back to a daily deal with either. I'd rather spend that money on fatty meat!

I lost another pound and 2 1/2 inches. It's going slowly, but it's working. So 11 pounds and 4 1/2 inches this year.
Eating this high fat is hard, I will finish this months experiment out, but for March I am not eating this high fat, and will probably drop some calories just because of that.

It's my Nephews 3rd B-day today so my dad and brothers and families and I are going to a pizza place for dinner. I doubt there will be much on the menu I can eat. I will just eat before I go, no biggie.
I don't feel so good today, crampy and bloaty..but my scale says I am super skinny today..Not Making it official until Monday though.
I gotta go lay down..
|
y0u
|
Well, I drank some barley wine style beer last night and it was a mistake...a big mistake. I puked 3 times this morning. Not fun, and I have felt ill all day long. Lesson learned. I think that was my alcohol for the month.
I did find hot wings on the menu at the pizza place though..they were good. No beer with dinner...akk!
|
Heather
|
I'm not sure if it's worse to puke or to feel like you are going to all day... Poor thing, take care of yourself.
|
y0u
|
Ok, I have been pretty damn strict for 6 weeks. But...I am gonna bump it up a notch. I really need to get some more exercise. This has been my downfall for awhile now, and I need to get back into the groove. I always feel better when I exercise. If I can just do it every day for 2 weeks I will stick with it. Even just an hour long walk every day would be fine, and some resistance bands at home for 15 minutes. So here is to day 1....(thought I haven't actually done it yet but I have to go grocery shopping and I am walking there and back and it takes an hour).
|
y0u
|
I exercised for 2 days in a row..it's a start and y0u gotta start somewhere.
I made a friend a cheesecake and it's been sitting in my frig for 2 days now, it gets delivered tomorrow for a B-day dinner. I have not and will not touch this thing. The B-day dinner is Duck and that is all I am eating. I wrote it...therefore it is....
Onward with science experiment...Lots of fat is working well.
|
y0u
|
Eating meat, animal fat, very limited dairy and eggs seems to be working quite well. I have increased my calories quite a bit this month, by 300-500 and upped my fat as well.
Today is the beginning of week 7 for this, and week 3 for the high fat/moderate protein experiment. It's weigh in day and I have lost 3 pounds and a 1/2 an inch this week. Not too shabby at all. So that is a total of 14 pounds and 5 inches in 6 weeks.(I put the wrong weight at the beginning of my journal by accident, I was 225)
I am really thinking I can be in Onederland by April If I stick to my guns and work the plan. I have no cravings, I have pounds of cheese in the frig and barely eat any of it. I seem to be doing great with an oz or two of goat cheese once in awhile and the same with a little bit of cream.
I have been off of AS for 6 weeks, although I did not eat much of them, they really did trigger cravings for me. I am doing really well (with one exception) in regards to consuming alcohol, but that is just another form of sugar craving in my opinion, and since that has been solved.....
Yeah me!!

Ok, so I am making observations about carbs, calories and fat. Last months figures are as follows:
Last months daily average stats:
Calories:1,563
Fat: 75%, 133.5 gr
Protein: 23%, 88.3 gr
carbohydrate: 2%, 6.4 gr
These are this months so far, and I don't expect them to change, with the possible exception of calories being slightly higher.
Calories: 1,827
Fat: 80%, 163.7 gr
Protein: 19%, 82.6 gr
Carbohydrate: 1%, 2.1 gr
I am losing just as much weight and inches and eating almost 300 more calories a day, and I feel quite satisfied as far as food goes. When I was eating less calories and fat I had cravings for more things, with more calories and fat, and a tad of goat cheese, I am satiated. Other areas of my life are heating up too... not sure where that is going yet..hmmrph..

Wow what a gorgeous steak!
Congrats on the fat loss. You are doing great!
I love, love, love, this way of eating too.
|
y0u
|
Miriam, me too..can't get any better than this.
Ok so it's spring time in Oregon. I popped into the garden and this is growing..wow...Fibonacci would have loved this sight!!
I am going to eat it next month!! So this of course gets me thinking about planning a low carb vegetable garden. Never done that before but it will be fun. I can always give stuff away to friends as well, but i have always done that, as well as donate to the food bank.
So here the dilema begins. Do I add veggies back in this summer..how much..will it halt weight loss?? My garden is a very social and mental perk for me, I love it. I enjoy being in a community garden and teaching kids and adults about growing their own foods. Evening cocktails in the garden are fun as well.
So today I am going through all my seeds, and will see what I can plant that is low carb. I will still do tomatoes, lettuces, japanese greens, peppers, green beans, brocolli, summer squuash, cauliflower and maybe some eggplants. But where the corn was I should do garlic and onions. I still have most of the spaghetti squash I grew last year, it will keep another 6 months at least. I will abstain from all produce until May with the exception of a few heads of cauliflower that are producing in the garden right now.
And how will my stomach react to reintroducing veggies??? Dean..do you have any experience with this?
|
Dean
|
Yes, I do.
When you go a long time without plant matter, your gut bacterial environment changes a lot. Once you reintroduce this stuff, look out. Be prepared for anything.
Long term, for me anyway, it's all about the fiber. I do think it's damaging. Also, the bacteria colonies are said to cause toxins to enter your blood stream. I don't need to concern myself about the validity of these threats, cuz, for me, I love spending the food bucks on animal flesh and fat, and avoiding the digestive issues that plant matter brings to my world. It's much more simple to just eat meat, eggs, butter, herbs, spices, water. Nothing goes to waste, either. Back when I used to think vegetation was necessary for good health, I would often throw tons of rotten vegetation in the trash, because it went bad before I got around to eating it.
Anyway, my thoughts are, if you love plant matter, eat it. It's not going to cause weight gain, if that is your main concern. In fact, it's my contention that one can actually lose weight quicker if they include this type of plant matter in their diet, since the overall calories will be lower, due to the displacement of animal fat, which is very high in calories. It is my experience as well. I used to eat a ton of vegetation, along with smaller amounts of meat and eggs, and I lost consistently. Of course, for the aforementioned reasons, I would rather eat the way I do now. I still lose and I feel so wonderful, and my gut is dead silent. And, I like it that way.

Thank you Dean, I knew you would have some good info to share, and it's much appreciated. I think I am going to eat small amounts of vegetation seasonally. But I don't have to make any decisions soon. I am starting my seeds this weekend though..I can still grow stuff.

So yOu've actually been doing your own little MAM experiment! Cool. And your results are the same as what Dean and I have experienced. With carbs close to zero, calories really do seem to be irrelevant.

Yes I have been. I have seen no women do it so I needed to. I see a lot of overweight women that say they cannot lose no matter what, but very few try near zero carbs, no alcohol, and almost no dairy, high fat from animal(not dairy). It seems to be working for me.

I weighed and measured myself today, I did not lose anything this week but I certainly did not gain, so I am fine with it, my body needs to adjust.
I have been exercising regularly, so that is good, though I am sure I could do better.
Eating a 1 pound steak after not eating for a day is a bad bad thing, I should be asleep but I still feel too ill to lay down. It sure felt good going down
I have no cravings.

Been at a stand still on weight loss still..but things will move soon. I am reducing calories next month a bit. Here is my haul from the meat man today..he gave me a "deal" again and winked at me
No need to add fat to these hunks-o-meat.

Hey yOu!
I'm a newbie here on this forum, but have been LCing for over a year now. I enjoyed reading your journal... and hope to catch up on others' soon too. Fortunately, yours was a short read (compared to others who have over 30 pages!).
Looks like we're both 5'7"... and reaching for that 150 goal weight. I'm at 208 lbs right now-- so only 58 more to go! My 30 yr class reunion is this summer.... so I've got my LC groove on!
How are your workouts coming along? I was never a gym rat... until Spring/2007. I hired a personal trainer and had one for almost two years. He returned back to college in January. When I first started out, I had memories of all the times I had joined gyms, paid for memberships, and never followed through. In the past, I had lost weight but never kept it off longterm. I felt that EXERCISE was the key thing that was missing from the equation. I took baby steps one day at a time, and read somewhere that it took 21 times to form a habit. The gym did become my new addiction... and it was a healthy thing. Not only did I feel better and look better-- I also formed new friendships and developed a more positive outlook on life. Plus, it sure was nice to hear from other members when they would compliment me on my body transformation. All the weight training has made a difference on my overall muscle tone.. and I have less saggy skin.
Hope things are going well for you!

Hi Kathy, thanks for dropping in. Yep, looks like we have the same amount to lose. I am a slow loser but I am working my plan..and it's working.
As far as workouts, I wish I could go to a gym but I cannot. I am walking daily and I don't drive, so I ride my bike or walk every where. As soon as the weather turns a bit warmer I will be riding my bike a lot more, so that should speed things up a bit.
Glad you came aboard the bus, it's a good place.

Bikes and walking are great too! I have this huge hill on my street with excellent incline that I want to attempt! The last time I tried to ride a bike was at a garage sale .. I thought I would try it out before the big purchase. I got on it, started peddling.. and it shook like mad!! I don't know if it was the bike or ME??!! Let's just say I haven't been on a bike since!
