A calorie is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree celsius.  So 1,000 calories would be the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1 degree celsius, right?

Right.  And a dietary Calorie is 1000 calories.  So 1000 Calories would raise the temperature of water by 1000 degrees celsius.  Or 81 kg of water by about 12 degrees K.  Or 81.6kg of human body about 14.4 degrees celsius ( the human body has a _lower heat capacity than water has_).

Of course, your body would never allow that.  It could lose an additional 1000 calories through evaporation of  7.6 cups of perspiration.  Of course, a hot body (yours, for example) will also passively lose heat through radiation and convection, as long as it is hotter than its surroundings.  The hotter you get, the faster your passive heat loss.  So if your temperature runs a little hotter, you could maintain that temperature without as much perspiration as you'd have at 98.6F.  I don't know how to do those calculations, though.

Dang, I guess I was using the wrong calorie.  I thought I had it right.  In that case, I have no idea why Dean and I didn't burst into flames during our experiments.  LOL   Time for the black box.  Yup

When I came up with 26 degrees and 7 1/2 cups of perspiration, I was so amazed that I just HAD to ask how that felt.   Can anyone check my work?
