If you do use heavy cream....I strongly suggest you choose an organic brand (preferably from grass-fed cows if you can find it) since the fat profile is markedly different between grain and grass fed cows - and at the level you're considering each day, it may be in your best interest as a guy to avoid the residuals of the hormones and antibiotics they give the grain-fed feedlot dairy cows! JMO for what it's worth - oh - and the grass-fed dairy also has a better omega-3:6 ratio too! |
Er...I think you're confusing a cup and a QUART. A cup of heavy cream is 821 calories. |
OOOPS.....that was 3,434 kj......you're right - calories = 821.....sorry about that!

Awesome, Dean! Well done. If nothing else, you're getting down to a good weight before your experiment starts so you don't have to be as concerned about putting on weight.
So let me just clarify something. You ate 800 calories of food and 700 calories of cream? That's a lot of cream! That's almost a cup of heavy cream, which isn't totally crazy, but aren't you drinking half and half in your coffee? Because that would be over 2 cups of half and half. Do you drink that every day? That is a lot of carbs. You carb tolerance must be quite high! _________________ Red |

I may do this what can we eat? Is cream in? Butter? exercise? Just meat and no spices? Coffee? I read through the thread and I did not see a definite answer. |

YES, Rich!
Come on in to our metabolic ward! The more the merrier!
Of course, you may have to do some sorta "favors" to get in now... since the Bus Boot Babes are on security detail...

Maybe those boots could help my shin splints or at least not think about them for a while.
If you do start on the 14th i will have to do th 16th as I will be in Disney and I cannot guarantee what I will eat.
Are you going to have a food list or are we going to wing it ourselves? |

Red,
Every day I have 2 large cups of coffee. EACH cup is 10 fl oz of coffee and 6 fl oz of half & half. Hey, I like my coffee this way! Lately, I have been doing this twice per day. So, that adds up to 40oz of coffee and 24oz of half & half. That's 966 calories and 36g carbs!
So, no, it was not 700 calories, but 942 calories of "cream". It's actually three cups of half & half!
Keep in mind that normally I only do half this much. It's only been in the last week that I've doubled this.
Lately I've needed more java.
I can tolerate a fair amount of carbs. In fact, it takes weeks and weeks of eating hundreds of grams of carbs per day for me to really put on body fat. I have to really work at it. But, that is a dangerous thing. Cuz excess glucose is really damaging in a lot more ways than just putting on excess fat stores. I've never been more than about 20 lbs overweight, and that's only been in the last 10 years. Before that, I had no excess weight, cuz I smoked and never ate that often. Plus, I have always been into walking/running my whole life, even though I smoked. It's only in the last 10 years that I have started to have weight problems, and they aren't major problems. But, I still think the damage from all the sugar I've consumed throughout my life cannot be healthy at all. I think there are people who never have a weight issue, but have done major damage to their arteries, develop cancer, etc., and, it's mostly because of all the excess glucose in their blood. That, and the foreign fats (non-animal fats), are what is the main health problem. That's why everyone in the industrialized nations have such a health crisis going on. It's not just an obesity epidemic. There are lots of other health problems showing up. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

Hey, whatever works. And if you're able to lose fat eating 40 grams of carbs a day, then more power to you. Hormonally, that level is obviously fine for you.
But you might want to rethink all your horn-blowing about IF, what with the 1000 calories of cream you're drinking during your 'fast'. I'm just teasing you. I fast most days and I think IF deserves a good old round of horn-blowing. _________________ Red |

We can start on the 16th, if you want. And, as far as food lists go... what would you like to see?
Here are some of my thoughts:
Keep carbs as low as possible. Use animal food as much as possible.
Animal flesh and FAT in copious amounts!
Heavy cream (not half & half ) should be used for coffee.
And, I think butter should be used for everything! _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

No, I totally agree that my "fast" is in TWO parts. From the last meal of the day to my coffee (first "meal" of the day)... AND... from my first "meal" of coffee to the first time I eat in the evening. A couple days ago, that second fast lasted over 12 hours. Now, perhaps that is not long enough to be considered a real "fast". But, it sure seems like it is beneficial.
Actually, I may (try to) dump the java here when this Experiment gets under way. I would like to do longer fasts.
The main thing is avoiding the constant grazing. That will still give your body a break from constant digestion, won't it? _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

I have been working on bringing the carbs down to as low as possible. I used to consume a ton during my paleo eating, but still far less than during my SAD days. I have slowly been cutting out more and more carbs during the last couple years. I doubt I will ever get to zero, but I'd like to eliminate as many as possible. Same thing goes for non-animal food. The more I can eliminate, the better. I'm taking a long term approach to this. I can't think of any non-animal fat that I do anymore. Gave up the soybean oil mayo. Gave up coconut oil. I've even given up supplements of all kinds. Feel just fine without 'em. If I eat enough raw egg yolks, I should be fine. Those are so chock-full of nutrients. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

Yes, normally I have just done two of those cups each day, first thing. It's my "breakfast". Then I fast again till evening. But, yes, I love coffee with CREAM! I used to love it with CREAM & SUGAR! I would put TONS (and I mean TONS) of sugar in my coffee. I would puke if I drank that now!
And, I hear ya on the expense. THAT is why I use half & half instead of heavy cream. While I would probably do only about half as much heavy cream, the stuff is almost three times as expensive!
For this upcoming Experiment, I will be using the heavy cream, and more than I normally would. It will be a great way of getting in lots of extra fat calories. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

Hey jeff and Rich (and all the others who WILL be joining us! ), one way of getting in tons of animal fat is to drink coffee with a boat load of heavy cream. If I had used heavy cream instead of half & half over the last week, I would have consumed 2491 calories per day just by drinking coffee! Anything over that would be extra calories above maintenance. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

If we can keep the coffee and heavy then I am in.
Animal flesh and fat and butter sounds good.
I will probably use garlic and onion powder and ground pepper as well.
I have a Himalyian (sp) mineral salt may use as well. |

Rich,
jeff and I already agreed that any seasonings are fine. Just watch the carb content by using FitDay. Eating plain meat for 30 days is WAY too boring! _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

I always use Dean's heavy whipping cream. I go through a quart every 3-4 days. I'll probably do more during the mega fat high calorie metabolic ward challenge. And Regina, yes, I will look for some of that organic cream, preferably from grass fed cows. There is a "health food" store not too far away. I'll see if they have it. _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |

You guys go through it quickly enough that it won't go bad. I only use organic, but it goes off so quickly that I can't ever finish my little pint before it goes off. I could go through a pint in a day, easily, if I let myself. But I try not to have too much dairy, as it's kind of addictive to me and my carb-tolerance is low. My squeeze doesn't lo-carb and doesn't particularly like cream, so I'm always throwing out spoiled cream, unfortunately. _________________ Red |

OK, so I must not have caught this, how many calories over are you guys doing? And what's the carb limit? I was considering joining in, but I think I could only get enough fat in to up the cals by using cream in my coffee. I don't think I could do straight butter, it makes me gag. _________________ Manaloa |

Mana,
Please join us. It will be a blast! This ward is heavily guarded, so we don't have to worry about AC bustin' in and screaming at us.
I think a lot of us are gonna take the "tons of cream in the coffee" trick for gettin' our fat cals up, up, up.
Four of us doin' this so far. Hope we get some more! _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

I just locked myself into the MAM metabolic ward. Breakfast was a drink made with 1 cup of heavy whipping cream, 3 egg yolks, and 3 Tbs of butter. Also having coffee with lots of cream. I'll drink 1 cup of cream with my coffee. That's 2200 calories and 96% fat! _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |

OK, I'll join in.
Can I use veggies as condiments or no? Like the ground chili beef I just made had a little less then 1/2 cup total veggies for 2 lbs of meat. It worked out to about 4.6 grams of carbs (with spices) per 8 oz serving.
What about artificial sweetener? or diet soda?
I could probably do the low-carb version of a "root beer float" = diet root beer + heavy cream to get my fat up. Of course I would switch it so instead of root beer and add heavy cream, I would have the heavy cream and then add enough root beer to make it work. _________________ Manaloa |

I checked with several different metabolism calculators and they all put me right around 2200 calories per day if I don't exercise. I'm going to use that as my point of reference. So, everything else I eat today will be bonus calories. I'm trying to shoot for around 4000 per day. At that rate, I should gain a pound every 2 days. That is, if there is no metabolic advantage to this way of eating. _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |

Mana,
We are shooting for the absolute maximum calories, the highest fat ratios (while still getting adequate protein), the lowest carbs, and as little non-animal food as possible. Make sure you know what your weight (and body fat - or measurements) are after just waking. The idea is to see, after 30 days, what the results are from eating as many calories over your needed cals, while doing VLC. We also are avoiding exercise, to rule that out as a reason for the results. We are trying to trash the calorie theory, and support the futile cycle theory. I think we will be successful. I guess you and jeff are starting today, then? Rich and I will start on the 16th. Is that correct, Rich? I also hope others join Rich and me. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.
