Jeff,
In case you don't check the introduction thread again, here's what I posted about fitday:

I have always suspected a few things about the weight gain in that movie. First, I think that he probably had been calorie and/or carb restricted just prior to starting the 30-day experiment. The implication was that he was gaining fat at a very rapid rate. I would contend that if he was in heavy ketosis and then switched to this diet, he'd probably gain 9-10 lbs in the first week just in water weight (I don't remember what the actual amount was).
Second, he committed to 3 meals a day PLUS snacks, AND he said that he would only eat or drink products from McDonald's. This could easily mean that he could have been consuming 5Kcal per day if he drank a few large soft drinks and 2 "snacks" a day in addition to the 3 meals. Without the food logs we won't know.
I'm not defending McDonald's menu, just truth in reporting. |

I was just looking at fitday. I see where I can make my journal public. but that is not the place where you actually keep track of all your food. I did not keep an acutal journal. _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |

There's bacon, sausage (watch the nitrates, and look for more natural kinds, like pork side for bacon), lard, fatty meats (like ribeye). I use mayo but some don't like it or don't like using it. _________________ Make yourself happy, don't rely on anyone else to do it. Be your own best friend. |

Butter, ghee, lard, duck/goose/chicken fat, beef and lamb tallow... they all have each their own lovely unique flavour. _________________ Red |

I'll post what I ate for a few days. There really was not alot of variety in what I ate, so most of the days were very similar foods, only with the amounts varying.
Day 1
2 cups heavy whipping cream
3 raw egg yolks
7 Tbs butter
5 mugs coffee
1.26 lbs. ribeye steak, nearly raw
2 more ounces heavy whipping cream
4260 calories
423g fat
6g carbs
122g protein
Day 3
2 cups heavy whipping cream
3 raw egg yolks
12 Tbs butter
1.24 lbs. ribeye steak, nearly raw
1.74 pounds boneless country style pork ribs, nearly raw
6423 calories
604g fat
1g carb
252g protein
Day 29
15 ounces boneless country style pork ribs, nearly raw
3 eggs, fried in butter
1 pound boiled shrimp
5 Tbs butter
2237 calories
173g fat
5g carbs

Was your butter salted or unsalted? I used unsalted so that the salt wouldn't interfere with my results. I almost always use unsalted. How did you eat the butter? Just cut it up and eat it? _________________ Red |

I actually used both kinds of butter. But I did try to cut way back on any sodium intake the last several days to shed any water that I may have been holding.
Sometimes I would just eat it. I also love to put butter on my steaks. _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |

Did you feel like you were holding on to extra water or weight at the end and that's why you reduced calories and salt? I'm just curious - I'm not doubting you. I had no preconceived notions about the results of this experiment when I started it, so I'm not necessarily in the 'it's impossible to gain weight/fat without carbs' camp. _________________ Red |

Thanks for all the info, Jeff!
Did you just drink the cream, as if it were a glass of milk? Or did you put it in the coffee? Or??
Did you use any noncaloric sweeteners in the coffee?
Why all the "nearly raw"? Just a matter of taste, or is that part of the experiment? (When we make country-style ribs, we sear them and then braise them in whatever seasonings for hours until tender, tender tender!
Did you drink certain amounts of water as well, or just as thirst dictated?
Thanks for putting up with millions of questions! |

I didn't feel like I was holding water. It was a just in case, type of thing, because I had some days that were pretty salty. _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |

The cream was either in coffee, or sometimes I would add some raw egg yolks and make an egg nog type drink. The nearly raw meat is just the way I like it. And I also think it's healthier than cooked. _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |

Here's what a person at AC's place thinks of me:
| Quote: | | I can personally attest that carbs are not the evil villian leading to weight gain. On a strict very low-fat, very high-carb diet I lose fat and get really ripped at calorie levels hovering around 3000/day....so much that I lose muscle in the process. I'm one of those people who have an easier time getting lean on a high carb diet. Some people fare much better taking the low-carb approach. The body line is, whatever you can live with that satisfies your nutritional needs and helps you to not overindulge can work. The idiot on that blog that tried to prove the validity of low-carb metabolic advantage with his gluttonous "experiment" has actually proved nothing. Even if he is honest and didn't gain weight overall, it proves nothing; his glycogen would be fully depleted and he may have lost additional muscle as well. It is highly possible to gain fat when the scale says you weigh less: You simply lost more water, muscle, and glycogen than the fat you have gained. Look at his picture....he's a dehydrated bag of flab. |
Which picture do you suppose he was looking at when he called me a "dehydrated bag of flab"? _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |

LOL.
Jeff clearly needs to spend much less time conducting goofy 'experiments', and far more time revising his training and nutritional regimen. |

Remarkable! But unsurprising. And hilarious!
By "dehydrated bag of flab," I think CodeSlinger means "way more ripped than me, and enjoying life and eating more, too."
By "idiot," I think AC means "disagrees with me."
What I can't figure out is, why is the site even named "lowcarbmuscle"? It seems like they're teeth-bared, slavering hostile towards low-carb.

| wow, those are some harsh words. and i, too, not understand since AC is a supporter of lc. on these boards, we all have our own ideas about what works and there are ongoing discussions about whether metabolic advantage even exists. but we all seem to agree to disagree w/o name calling. people who respond this way probably respond in the same manner to everything. wouldn't it be dreadful to live w someone like that. |

Also, I agree that why is it called a lowcarb muscle forum?
I don't read it, but doesn't that seem odd?
Why bother having a lowcarb muscle forum if you bash lowcarb?
What DOES AC subscribe to as what should be followed?

I remember reading his website a long time ago, when he actually had articles and stuff on it.
In the article that told his history, he was basically eating carnivore, but with a veggie/fruit OCCASIONALLY thrown in.
Of course, now that that particular site is gone, nothing can be proved, lol.
Zero carb, low carb, paleo, moderate carb, etc all follow eating NATURAL foods.
Macros can be all over the board, and yet all under the umbrella of paleo.
I've personally tried eating a broader paleo diet (meat, veggies, fruit, and nuts) and I have allergies and intolerance to a lot of veggies, fruit, and nuts. I also had bathroom issues.
So I follow paleo, but eat within what i'm allergic to.
It's really hard to avoid a host of pesticides if you eat veggies & fruit, and are intolerant of them like me (including migraines). Others are fine with them. _________________ Make yourself happy, don't rely on anyone else to do it. Be your own best friend. |

Well, I thought that huge syringe of Kool-Aid he accidentally pumped into his (large muscle) would have opened his mind a bit, but all he did was put a huge hole in the wall of the padded cell at our metabolic ward ... and then started all his naked roller skating around Eades neighborhood.
I guess some people just don't get it. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

Seriously, that's a hell of an experiment. I dunno how you stayed sane ramjetting that much food into yourself on next to no carbs...but bravo.

I hear you on that. I was doing 4-5k cals/day during my experiment and was pretty much disgusted with eating for the duration.
If I'd been bulking on pizza and Ho Hos it might have been a more pleasant experiment. _________________ Viking Dan

You know, jeff, I was meaning to ask you if during this Experiment you felt warmer than normal, due to all that futile cycle activity, which should generate a lot of heat when all that ATP is being broken down. I always notice how warm I get, sometimes even hot, when I eat lots of excess animal fat, while keeping carbs super low. Sure saves money on the heat bill, since I can keep the temps way down during the winter. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

I always notice how warm I get, sometimes even hot, when I eat lots of excess animal fat, while keeping carbs super low. Sure saves money on the heat bill, since I can keep the temps way down during the winter. |
I sometimes do feel warm while I'm eating. But in general, no. Nothing that I could notice. _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |

Thanks Lynne. As I'm sure Dean would attest as well, it really is not fun eating like that. Forcing yourself to eat lots of fat when you have no appetite at all is not all that pleasant. _________________ Eat, Drink and Be Merry, For Tomorrow We'll Die |
