Karen,

You may not want to hear this, but right now it is going to be easier for you to stick to your guns with this. It's when you start feeling really good on your natural human diet, eating lots of good animal fat, and everything just seems so wonderful, that things will get hard. It's during that time to come when you will have to be really vigilant. That is when most people relapse. They think, "oh, what could one donut or piece of pie hurt" and then it's curtains. The carb monster is really gonna be buggin' you once you start feeling normal again.

And, the carb monster has SO many friends in this modern crab-addicted world. It's not like giving up smoking or drinking or drugs. Society and the health care establishment look down on those things, so there are plenty of social sanctions to help one stay away from those substances. A drug addict can simply change friends, and hang with a new crowd that doesn't use. But, for carb addiction, it's a real challenge to say the least, cuz not only is EVERYBODY eating tons of carbs, and processed foods are EVERYWHERE, but all your family and friends are gonna be saying "don't be such a zealot", or "give yourself a break and have this treat", etc. They are gonna make you feel weird, so you will conform to their "normal" (distorted) world. It happens all the time, as we all are very familiar with. And, the modern health establishment is gonna be on their side, not on our side.

But, the folks on the Bus who have all taken the red pill will be here whenever you need some sane people to talk to. So, don't hesitate to come partake in the Kool-Aid, Karen. Cool

is this what they call candida die off? Too much yeast that accumulated from too much sugar? (i ate lots of chocolate from my sons easter basket the past two weeks..lol) or is this die off something different? i hope your right about it lasting a day or two..and please tell me i will feel energized after this die off is over. i feel like a truck hit me. Bonkers Glad to know what it is though!

Karen, Candida albicans is a type of yeast (in the fungus family) so it's not bacteria as such, but yes, it is one of the types of micro-organisms that live in the gut and is included in the general description of 'gut flora'.

You're spot on about what it feeds on -yup, carbs and alcohol!
Normally it remains in its 'friendly' yeast form and thus doesn't 'present' as the actual "Candida" condition with its long list of symptoms. But, long term carb ingestion, especially if concomitant with a depressed immune system and a host of other 'stress' factors such as illness, smoking, chemicals etc., can cause it to change into its 'unfriendly' fungal form.

In this form it can penetrate into tissues and spread and, well, cause all sorts of grief!

As with the bacteria that live on carbs, depriving the candida fungus of its food source is the best way to control it. The debate, as you probably know, is about whether once it has developed into its unfriendly fungal form, diet alone (ie removal of all alcohol and carbs) is enough to kill it.

There is even debate as to whether 'Candida' as a 'condition' (ie: where it turns into a pathogenic form) really exists...I don't know, but it seems fair to assume that if you avoid carbs you'll be killing off all types of micro-organisms in the gut that feed on them, thus avoiding all the subsequent problems of their overgrowth.

Karen, believe in your body; it can heal (it would like to heal) it self with rest (for the start!), good fat (animal fat) and good protein! Your body and mind have to do a lot of work and don't forget, your small intestine and colon are big, very big!

Today was just horrible! After i had the nausea and 3 times of diarrea, i felt sick for a few hours...nauseus, tired, cranky, and just ick! After that wore off i got hit with massive carb cravings. I started eating and eating, just bingeing out trying to make myself feel content..but nothing i ate made me feel content. I WANTED to eat the Easter candy and my sons m&ms and the potato chips sooooooo bad it wasn't funny. I had to FIGHT with myself..or i guess fight with the CARB MONSTER for about 2 straight hours. I came out of it eventully..but it was the hardest time i ever remember having with the cravings..it was just horrid. i think the reason it was sooo bad this time is because in the past i would give in to the cravings and eat all the high carb/sugary stuff and then be relieved!! This time i just fought and fought. I came through MOSTLY unscathed. I did end up eating some things i really shouldn't have but stayed low carb/good carb anyway! (see my food log below). The food log for the day will be a mile long from all the bingeing and fighting the monster and if i plugged it into fitday i am sure it would be like 5,000 calories..lol

BUT I MADE IT!!!! I MADE IT!!!  Grin I didn't give up this time like i have many times in the past...i am so proud of myself! I felt insane and scared and all kinds of crazy and bad thoughts were going through my head...but i FOUGHT those thoughts too!! and guess what? I WON!!!  Yup i WON this time!  Ecstatic I am so proud of myself for making it, and thankful to God that i did!

Now see my sorry food log below in the next post..lol  Wow

Thanks to all of you for the encouragement and support today!!! i love ya all!!!  Heart

Karen, if that ever happens again then try to stay on animal fat (no peanut butter!!!); even if you put butter on the cheese! The more fat with cheese the better (cheese = constipation).

You will find that so many things tast sweet (cheese, meat...)!

Cream is too sweet for me; meat is just right and the lambs suet is also sweet (for me just right)!

Protein and fat should calm you.

Your doing this for your children too Sunny !

This is such a good post!! Yup   If someone tries to give up drugs or smoking most people will support and even help them.... but try to give up carbs, and they offer you some.  Crazy.

I am glad today is better for you.

thanks Heather! Yes it is so nice to have others around me LCing!

I found a post over at ALC that definitely describes what happened to me yesterday:

A strong gastro-intestinal reaction to coconut oil may not be just a food intolerance. (Though it could be that too)
CO has fungicidal and bactericidal effects. Depending on the particular bugs that inhabit the gut it can cause what is known as a "herxheimer" or "herx" reaction.
This is where a large number of bugs suddenly up and die at once. This is more a problem where they are resident in the gut wall rather than "midstream" so to speak, as the body then has the job of detoxing their mortal remains from within and between body tissue. This can cause various symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea high temperature, breakouts, and lots more. The type and severity of the reaction varies greatly.
There are numerous threads discussing Herxheimer in the Candida/IBS areas if anyone wants more data.
If this is a contributory cause then the best approach might be, as you suggest, to reduce to very low doses of CO and ramp up slowly over days or weeks to allow the body to cart off the casualties at a manageable rate.
This should produce a rising tolerance for CO as the bug count goes down.

On the other hand of course, a continuing reaction to CO would tend to suggest it might be just a food intolerance

Day 5 is over and today i felt much better than yesterday. I even felt a little energy for part of the day, though part of the day i was also a bit tired/weak. I skipped on the coconut oil today and tomorrow i will have 1 tsp instead of a tB. i think i will stick with 1 tsp for a couple days before upping it back to 1 TB.

A few things i have noticed after 5 days of LCing....

Happy i looked at my hand and noticed the skin isn't dry at all it is looking really healthy.

Happy  there seems to be a bit of reddness in my cheeks, but i think its a good thing, my face looks more radiant

Happy  my appetite decreased a bit today, At breakfast i left 2 bacon strips on my plate and ate them later. At dinner i left one Chicken leg on my plate. I just am not as hungry today.

Happy  the carb cravings seem completely gone and i am craving FAT

Happy  the pain that i have had in my knee since October has diminished tremendously and is about 20% of what it was.

AMAZING how much could change in only 5 days of low carb eating!!  Woo Hoo

Don't be offended, Karen, but I always chuckle when I see the length of your food list.  Mine would normally contain about 3-5 items.  But hey, whatever it takes, right?

Jeff,
Yes my food list is terribly long..i noticed myself. I sure do eat a variety of foods. i kinow from past experience that once my body adjusts to lc and i lose the hunger my food log wont be as long or as varied. i need to start concentrating more on meat and eggs

Ok..day 6 is ending! It wasn't that great of a day. I was slightly nauseus on and off and very tired and carb craving on and off. It wasn't as bad as day 4 was, but it still sucked. This evening i started tasting metal in my mouth so apparently i am in ketosis!

I decided to plug today's food into fitday because i was interested to see where my calories and fat fell trying HIGH FAT. i figured i must be eating 80% fat, so i was surprised it came in at 74% fat, which is still high but not as high as i thought.

In the past on Atkins when not TRYING to eat high fat and just eating what i felt like eating i ranged 60-65% fat and my calories during the first week always came in at 2000-2300 per day. After the first week when i stopped carb craving so much and got less hungry my cals would come in at 1800-2000 per day.  So with the higher fat my calories are UP. I am a bit nervous about that and interested to see what i lose at the end of one week when i weigh in Thursday morning.

Ok my food log and fitday will be in the next post.

Yesterdays Food Log

Day 6
April 8

16 ozs coffee
1/2 cup cream
1 tsp coconut oil
1/4 banana
4 TB Butter
1 oz cashews
5 fried eggs
2 tsp mayo
2 chicken legs
2 oz cheddar
3 ozs ham
6 ozs ocean perch
1 oz cream cheese
1 dill pickle spear
2 ozs provolone
1 oz pork skins
32 ozs water
4 ozs crystal lite lemonade
1 tsp cod liver oil

FITDAY stats:

Cals   2864
Fat        225 g   74%
Protein  161 g   23%
Carb       18 g     3%

These are HIGH calories compared to what i have eaten doing LC before and its because of the HIGHER FAT i am forcing myslelf to eat. I don't know if 74% fat will help me lose better than the 60-65% fat but i figure give it a try and find out! lol

BJ
thanks! Hopefully the extra fat and calories don't matter and as bear says  in the absence of carbs fat doesnt stay on your body. so the extra cals shouldnt matter..but we will see. On traditional atkins induction i have ALWAYS lost 7-8 lbs per week the first week and 4-5 lbs the second week and then 1-3 lbs most weeks after that. So tomorrow we will see the comparison! Happy

I hope it's not the case for you, but keep in mind that Bear was talking about less than 5g of carbs -that more than that might be enough to stop some people losing on higher cals. But you won't know til you try, right?  Comfort

Karen-  Sorry you were feeling icky.  I hope that gets better soon.  It should be interesting to compare the higher fat to what you experienced before.  It would be great if the higher cals and fats worked well for you.  You'll only know by trying, right?

Keep up the good work!

ONE WEEK WEIGH IN

Thurs April 10

277.2. lbs
weight loss in 1 week = 7 lbs

ok...what does this say. i told ya'll i have always lost 7-8 lbs on my first two week induction on Atkins. But that was eating 60-65% fat and 2100-2300 cals per day.

As you can see from my last 2 days cals i am eating over 74-79% fat and 2800+ cals per day! Not only that but i didnt do strict induction like i usually do. This week i ate: 2 grapes, 1/4 banana, 1/2 pear, LC ice cream bar, cashews for 4 of the days....and YET i still lost the same amt of weight!!

I ate between 12-19 carbs per day!

So...even at that LOW carb level...but not zero carbs...eating such high fat...i can get away with all those extra calories YET it didn't affect my weight loss!

I don't know if this is enough to prove anything because i don't know if the FIRST week on LC is some magical thing where i will lose the same no matter WHAT i do! In order to prove the theory that the extra fat doesn't matter...i would probably have to eat that high of fat for weeks.

Honestly, eating SUCH high fat...its hard to do..lol...i feel like i am constantly eating. I don't know what i will do now...try to keep the fat over 70% or just start doing regular atkins induction...I will think about this.

Karen, GREAT results!  Yup  Fantastic.

I agree with what you're saying, it looks promising even if you can't 'conclude' anything definite...keep up the great work!!

Here it is ...day 9...i am starting to feel better. No nausea so far today. I am not as tired or weak feeling. The carb cravings seem almost gone. i went to my small group study for church last night and sat and drank water while everyone else was eating the high carb appetizers and i wasn't drawn to them at all, not even the choc chip cookies.

I HAVE decided that i am sick of writing every food down i eat and plugging into fitday. it is taking up too much of my time.

I know what i can and can't eat and what my limits are and am sticking to them at Atkins induction levels, but i won't be logging my daily food or fiit day except maybe once a week to make sure i am staying on track..i will also post my weekly weigh in. I just want to live my life and eat low carb without spending so much time planning and writing and worrying about exact fat levels. Now that i have passed the hardest part ...i can do that much easier.

Cheer That sounds awesome, Karen. You must be feeling damn proud of yourself!! At least you should be! Sometimes I almost feel like a little kid who's been let in on a big, special secret, and thus feels all pleased as punch and special, when I count the days that I've stayed on track.  LOL

Karen-  I am the same about fitday.  I used it all the time at the beginning of the year, but now I just keep track more loosely on paper.  I know what I can have.  I only go there occassionally to check out my daily levels.   It was getting to be such a pain.

Karen, dealing with Fitday is much easier if you only eat like 3 or 4 things each day.   LOL

...have you ever used NutrionData.com?
I barely use it these days but when I was comparing fat % in different cuts of meat and stuff, I found it much more user friendly than FitDay. You just add things to your pantry and then it's really easy to add/compare what you've eaten etc.

I agree though, it's still a pain in the posterior to be fiddling around checking percentages all the time!  Roll Eyes

anyhoo, here's the link:

Karen,

Here's another idea. Screw counting anything. Just focus on eating carnivorously. You'll eventually lose your appetite and your cravings for carbs. The trick is to get as many carbs out of your system as possible. You could be the one to finally drive AC over the edge. Bonkers Oh, wait... never mind... the Kool-Aid already took care of that. Wow

LOL  Sunny  Cool

Hey, if you purchase FitDay, you can just drag and drop foods you eat on a regular basis. But, I HATE FitDay. It's good for checking on the calories in x, y, or z, but to track stuff, forget it. Roll Eyes

Do ZCarnivore for a week. Watch what happens. Hell, from the food lists you've been posting you are so close to being there. We all know that the original Atkins was ZCarnivore foods. Wink

Eat meat, easier not to cheat and stay off of the scale!  I stopped weighing myself a couple of months ago...it kept losing weight on me, I have enough of a problem with the people around me telling me to gain some weight.  I always tell them I weigh ten pounds more than I actually do just to get them off my back!!!

I am never hungry anymore, I have to stop and think and make myself eat.

So, Karen...hang in there and keep up your good work.

Thanks for all the ideas and comments everyone!

i will check out nutritiondata and see what its about.
The idea of going Zcarnivore is definitely tempting, since i am so close as it is. The veggies aren't all that important or thrilling anyway. If it would help me lose without having to write every stinkin thing down and fitday it it would be worth it. I have already started losing my appetite and lost my carb cravings so it really should be easy. Maybe i should consider eating only 3-4 things per day as Jeff said, i just eat SUCH a variety, but i think i REALLY needed that in the beginning. Now it's like i really don't care all that much about food..lol. hmmmmm...lots to ponder.  Yup
I am grocery shopping today and about to write the list.

I can't believe i am on day 10 and past the worst of the withdrawals. AHHHH..it feels good. I actually am starting to feel energy instead of nausea and tiredness. woot!

Karen,

I'm so glad to hear you describe this. You should definitely do strict animal foods. Just focus on all animals (fish, seafood, fowl, beef, pork, etc) and VLC dairy and eggs. MAKE SURE TO GET PLENTY OF ANIMAL FAT. That cannot be emphasized enough. YES, you will definitely start to lose your appetite. That is your body switching to a NATURAL way of sending proper signals. The body uses hormones for that. Your hormones are getting back to normal. They are gonna send you the right signals now.

Trust me. Those carbs cause so much confusion in the hormonal signals, that it is no wonder that you go off on big binges. Totally normal. I myself have experienced this. You are not alone, believe me. I could eat SO MUCH sugary crap and still want more. Scrambling our hormonal signals with carbs is what causes us to eat more and more of this crap.

Focus on animal foods. Stay away from processed meats. Get as much animal fat as you need to FEEL GOOD. Easy to do, if you just set your mind to it.

Keep us informed, Karen. We are all rooting for you.

BTW, you are doing SO FANTASTIC!!!

Congrats

Great job, Karen.  As time goes by, it will become easier to drop the veggies if you want to.  I wouldn't worry much about it at this point.  Keep up the good work.

Yah, Karen, like jeff said, I wouldn't worry about a bit of rubbish. I would, however, caution you to avoid anything that tastes sweet, cuz that may trigger you to want other junk food. The more you get used to eating high animal fat and enjoying the tastes of meat, eggs, dairy, and such, the easier it will be to stick to your guns. Eat lots of animal fat, drink plenty of water, get plenty of rest. Things will get easier and easier.

You're doin' great, Karen. I'm really proud of you.

Keep up the good work! Thumbs Up

Thanks for the support everyone!

i am not looking forward to my weigh in tomorrow.

Theres a slippery slope and I am sliding..i had LC ice cream twice this week..ive occasionally eaten bits of fruit like 1 slice of apple, a couple grapes, a few bites of banana. I ate saurkraut to other night with my polish sausage. Instead of water only i have had an occasional crystal lite drink and a coupld diet root beers this week. So even though i haven't gone off low carb..i feel like i am sliding into bad territory and need to revise some things.

As of tomorrow after my weigh in i will go back to strict induction and only eat the meat, eggs, veggies (3 cups or less per day) and i am going to try to stick to 3 TB or less of cream and 2 ozs or less of cheese per day.

live and learn...i just hope i didn't GAIN this week! Oops

...fingers crossed for you... Heart

That's the problem isn't it? It always starts out as 'just a tiny bit of this or that'. But, for so many of us, the reality is that if you've ever had a weight problem then your body just can't handle carbs (well, I don't think anyone's body *can* handle carbs actually, but some of us are just susceptible in more, er,  visible ways than others LOL ). That's why until we accept this as a reality for the rest of our lives our addiction to carbs will make us vulnerable to slipping them back in and we will keep getting trapped by the 'all things in moderation is best' meme. Hang in there honey! Thinking of you  Comfort
