Reading Trick and Treat at the moment. One of the many tidbits of information that made me chuckle out loud was a graph that showed the absorbancy of antioxidants from foods we eat. You know how we are always told to eat tons of fruits and vegetables to get our antioxidants (which are of questionable benefit anyway), well it seems that COFFEE is head, shoulders, torso, ass, and thighs over fruits and veggies when it comes to antioxidant absorption.

Toast  Toast  Toast  Toast  Toast      Yes, I've been reading this other places as well, that coffee is an antioxidant dynamo!  Bottoms up!!!

SInce I have had trouble getting rid of excess iron and difficulty eating beef (even the smell nauseates me), there was one item that jumped out at me when reading 'Trick and Treat" and that's regarding iron build up in the blood. He was actually talking about something else (mild kidney disease) I think, and suggested (I'm simplifying) they still stick to a low carb diet but keep their iron levels down by eating less red meat and subsituting it with chicken, pork, fish and dairy and eggs (which help flush some iron out of the system). Since I have too much iron and the Doc doesn't want to bleed me and the Canadian Red Cross won't allow me to donate blood, I think I'll try this. I was already wondering why my body keeps rejecting beef. I think I may have found the answer.

Besides, arn't we supposed to listen to our bodies?

Oh and met my son's new girlfriend last night. He brought her over, introduced us and I asked if they had dinner and invited them out. When it came time to decide where to go, my son says "Anywhere you want to go, she eats like us."  Grin

August was a fairly good month. Dropped 4 pounds total. I'm finding eating this way is a lot easier now almost second nature.

Sister came over and weighed herself yesterday. She restarted Atkins August 1st and dropped 7 pounds this month. Brother has dropped 15 pounds since July 1st doing Zero Carb so we are feeding off each other so to speak  LOL Propping each other up offering tips and encouragement.

All in all it's going really well.  Sunny

Well since falling on Sept 1st I've gained about 4 - 5 pounds. Will have this weekend to dry out hopefully. Don't want all that hard work to go to waste by regaining everything. And I'm not going to make excuses for myself or blame anyone. It just happened and I'm moving on.

Almost made it today but not quite.

Menu: salmon, cheese, soup, ice cream (one hagen das bar), muffin, soup, coffee cream. Good news was NO COOKIES.

Eating fat juicy new york steak right now.

Just made some hard boiled eggs and am going to stuff myself with bacon and eggs and other meat and fish until all the cravings go away this weekend.

Increased my cals yesterday and I'm down to my pre-cheat weight this morning. Had about 1 1/4 cups heavy cream to up my fat. Ended up eating about 2300 cals and still dropped almost 3 pounds on the scale.

Back to eating normal cals today unless I feel hungry or get cravings. Almost like being on Dr. Jan's diet but without the carbs. Very high fat and low to medium protein and I'm back to where I was. Perhaps I just need more fat and less protein. It may be worth the experimentation. Still carnivore though  Sunny

Sister was over to weigh herself yesterday. She's down another 3 pounds this week to 228. She's doing really well too.

Today's planned menu is: feta cheese omelet, bacon, salmon, pork chop, butter, lots of cream and coffee (about 1560 cals)

Well I'm definitely on track now, down to my lowest weight yet: 204.6.

I changed my avatar because I noticed that no one on this board uses a picture that shows their face and was wondering about that. I was the only one. Not that I'm paranoid ... just sayin...

I've had some success with higher fat so I'm continuing with that. Other than that, everything is great.

I'm looking forward to bouncing around between 200 and 205 for the next month or so as long as I don't go over 205. I've been hovering between 210 and 205 for way too long but it's my body that seems to call the shots and I just have to wait it out.

Still on track and staying there even if it means knocking myself out cold if I even consider cheating  LOL

3 month anniversary of carnivore eating (with a few rough bumps along the way so I'm NOT going to start recounting the days again)
Weight today: 204.8
Total pounds lost: 22.2
Resolve is to continue and not cheat. Menu items staying in are: eggs, bacon, pork, headcheese (if I can get it), beef, chicken, seafood especially salmon, tuna and herrings, cheese, coffee and cream.

Happy Anniversary! And I'm so happy you are doing so well! And your siblings too.
Is your brother's diet pretty much the same as yours?
You have both lost a lot of weight.  Clap

Met Bro and Sis for dinner on Saturday. We are all losing but because we are older it's coming off slowly.

Bro is in a stall at 216 pounds and he eats nothing but beef and water because he loves beef. Sister dropped another pound this week and she's 227 (she's doing induction Atkins). I'm hovering around 205 and I'm also in a stall and I'm carnivore. We prop each other up and that helps.

Bought the Drs. Eades new book "The 6 week cure for the middle-aged middle" Not the greatest title but gets the point across I suppose. I'll see whether there's any new information there. The fact that half the book is recipes ticked me off a bit. If I wanted to buy a cookbook I'd have bought a cookbook but since I'm a carnivore I really don't need one. However, since I like the work that the good Doctors are doing to try and tear down the "conventional nutritional wisdom" I don't mind supporting them.

Very interesting......please post helpful notes from the book. I am hoping the recipes are all meat. What some of the books now a days try to pull off as low carb and zero carb are full of carbs.

I am completely and totally ticked off at the Eades' book. What a waste of money. It may work for those who have never been low carbing and need step by step instructions on how to do it but drinking protein shakes? Really? I skimmed the recipes but they seem to be full of veggies, fruits and artificial stuff.

The preliminary chapters didn't really give me any new or earth shattering information either. Save your money and buy a few steaks instead.  Grin

Progress report: Day 100 Carnivore eating
Wt: 205

Went for breakfast with my brother and sister who are both younger than me.

Brother is doing strict zero carb with water only. He's lost 50 pounds and weighs 215. His goal weight is 190 or 185.

My sister has been doing Atkins for about 3 years. She's lost 63 pounds and weighs 227. Her goal weight is 170.

I've been low-carbing since what 2005? and lost approximately 20 pounds in that time and been a carnivore for 100 days and have lost 22 pounds for a total of 42 pounds.

So us sibs have lost a combined total of 155 pounds using variations on the low carb theme. Once we reach goal weight we will do an after picture. I have a before picture so no worries.

We had a great breakfast: Bro had a steak with a side of bacon. I had a steak and 4 egg yolks, my sister had a ham and cheese omelet. We were happy discussing our weight loss successes and sharing our woeful co-worker stories. It's so nice to be able to talk to people who understand what is going on. We also discussed all the health issues that have been resolved and are being resolved and how great our lipids are. My brother always chuckles that he's considered a freak of nature by the company nurse because his lipids are perfect but still is positive that his diet will kill him. Whatever!

I wish I could be eating breakfast with you three> It must be heavenly to have such support. My Significant other is Vegetarian and my brothers are across the country.
So happy you all have lost so much weight! And thanks for the book review so that I don't waste my money. That amount will buy steaks like you talked about.
I look forward to saying soon That I lost 40, 50+ lbs. I'm still only at 25lbs. lost so far.
I love your journal and your website blog. It is very helpful for me too. I would like to get some books you recommend.

Yeah surfergirl the family support is absolutely outstanding when you are swimming agains the tide in this crazy, nutritional dark age.  Mad

Well broke my stall this morning and I am so happy. Don't care if I bounce back up tomorrow, BUT I HIT 203.2 TODAY and I will hit it again before I go further down. BUT THAT'S PROGRESS in my books.

I've been feeling wonderful lately, almost euphoric. No cravings, no hunger. It's heaven.

Ecstatic

PostPosted: Tue Sep 22, 2009 2:46 am    Post subject: Warmongering and Low Carb Boards Reply with quote

Where have I heard the cliches that if we want peace in the world we need women in power because all men want to do is create and perpetuate wars? If women ruled the world we would have everlasting peace and order. Well has anyone spent any time on low-carb/vlc/ZC boards? I mention these forums because I don't go to others so can't comment on those.

On most of these forums you find a gaggle (this is a polite term) of women who seem to jump all over you if they feel you said/did something they disagree with. Usually they pick on noobs or people who are unsure of themselves. Instead of educating, informing, supporting, enlightening, they spend inordinate amounts of time speculating, ferreting, snooping, gossiping, about others so-called infractions. It's a wondrous and awe-inspiring sight the lengths to which these insecure and unenlightened women go to try and discredit unsuspecting people.

Since I don't intimidate easily, it doesn't deter me much. I work around those people who are very obvious to me. However, there are a lot of people out there who withdraw and leave these forums because they can't take the heat. It's too bad really.

So in the spirit of this post, I will post in my blog almost exclusively from now on. Even though I have had some fun with these ogrettes, it's a waste of my time having to put up with ignorant people.

If you want to find a forum where there is absolutely no melodrama, no back-stabbing, and unfailing support most of the time then join the Magic Bus.

Kateryna...so well put.

Although I realize this sort of behavior you speak of exists...I have NEVER been the type to join such crap...I come from a family of individual thinkers. ...and shall remain one.

I also don't give a damn what other people eat.  I am happy to share my experiences with others..and love to learn from others as well..and that is what the bus is all about...and i for one..am very happy you are part of it.  You my dear...and one of the good ones.. Big Hug

Day 103 - Wt 202.4

OUt of stall mode for the moment  Ecstatic

The longer I do this the easier it gets. I've been told eating this way is boring, however I enjoy my food immensely whenever I do eat. I feel great.

Found out one of my ex-bosses has cancer and had to have his kidney removed. Went to visit him in hospital yesterday and saw him and his wife (she's a vegetarian with rheumatoid arthritis, weighs about 90 pounds). They are in their mid-60's. He's bearing up well under the circumstances. But when I compared how they looked to how great I felt, it really inspired me to continue eating this way.

The human suffering caused by the dietary dark ages of today is immeasurable. Putting a face on that suffering by that visit yesterday really hit home.

That is so true, Kate.  Most of the death and illness in the developed world is a result of the diseases of civilization.  These would all be rare to non-existent if everybody ate like we do.

So true.......the hospitals are full of vegetarians and low fat/no fat eaters.
I have never felt better in my life since changing from being vegetarian for so many years. I was in the dark.

My energy came back after eating meat. Now it's only been since June, but I am healing years of protein/fat deprivation.

I love headcheese and it's made from pork, usually pork hocks. It's kind of like jellied pork hocks. Now everyone around me may be going "eewwwwwww" but I made a startling discovery. Eewwww doesn't put me off. If I like something, who cares what anyone else thinks?

Now to the startling discovery. I had gone to a nutritional website that among other things will give you the inflammation factor of all foods. Wild Salmon, of course, is very anti-inflammatory. So when I plugged in my beloved headcheese I found that instead of what I expected, it was mildly anti-inflammatory not pro-inflammatory. Why I should be surprised I don't know but everyone avoids pork like the plague because it is so "unhealthy" and full of "god-awful saturated fats" and the list of derogatory comments goes on and on.

Avoiding pork for religious reasons is ok, I understand that. But if the Okanawans eat it, I don't see why I can't. Besides, I love it  Happy

I am rediscovering pork myself...and it's a nice switch from beef..just had the butcher at work cut me a bunch of thick chops for my freezer..so tasty..and $1.99 a pound!!

I had a question for you about your asthma.  Before I cut grains and processed foods and lots of booze out of my diet I had really severe asthma since my young 20's.  Now I am almost completely asthma free..used my inhaler this week during my horrid sickness/pneumonia episode once or twice..and then maybe once or twice in the last 9 months.

You talked about saturated fats and your lungs in your other journal...would like to know more about that...and do you also contribute grains to your asthma?  How is your asthma now?  Do all the anti-inflamitory foods we eat help with our asthma?  I sure eat a lot of wild caught salmon....and I sure don't ache with arthritus like I used to..my body used to feel like I was 80 years old..now I feel 25.

I speak only from my experience with asthma. Two things have really helped me: Carnivore eating, although low carbing also helped, and a chlorine filter on my shower head plus eliminating all bleach products and spray cleaners. I haven't completely cured my asthma yet, that's the last disease of civilization (besides obesity) that I'm trying to get rid of but then I'm a lot older than you and the damage to my body has been a lot worse.

Found the article I was referring to here:

http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2009/06/06/saturated-fat/

on Tim Ferriss' blog. I need to bookmark his site. He outlines the benefits of saturated fats and item #4 is Healthy lungs:

"For proper function, the airspaces of the lungs have to be coated with a thin layer of what’s called lung surfactant. The fat content of lung surfactant is 100 percent saturated fatty acids. Replacement of these critical fats by other types of fat makes faulty surfactant and potentially causes breathing difficulties. Absence of the correct amount and composition of this material leads to collapse of the airspaces and respiratory distress. It’s what’s missing in the lungs of premature infants who develop the breathing disorder called infant respiratory distress syndrome. Some researchers feel that the wholesale substitution of partially hydrogenated (trans) fats for naturally saturated fats in commercially prepared foods may be playing a role in the rise of asthma among children. Fortunately, the heyday of trans fats is ending and their use is on the decline. Unfortunately, however, the unreasoning fear of saturated fat leads many people to replace trans fats with an overabundance of polyunsaturated vegetable oils, which may prove just as unhealthful."

My arthritis is almost completely cured now. I still can't believe it. It's like a miracle. I think the incorporation of anti-inflammatory foods helps with everything because it balances out the pro-inflammatory ones. Of course almost all food is mildly inflammatory. I have a site where you can check glycemic load and inflammation markers here:

http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts/sausages-and-luncheon-meats/1350/2

showing what my beloved headcheese factoids are. You can plug in whatever food you like. It also shows what the omega 3 to 6 ratios are as well.

And then there's the feeling of well being. When I get giddy at work I tell them it's the hand sanitizer  Grin

Sorry, I need to correct my previous post. It seems Tim Ferriss was quoting the Drs. Eades in his article. He states its an excerpt from their new book but I don't recall reading it there. I'll have to check it out again.

Thanks yOu!

Met siblings for breakfast and my brother brought me a kilo (2.2lb) chub of headcheese. What a sweet guy :) Happy

Got enough for a month's worth of lunches, one portion headcheese to two hard boiled eggs. Once a week I take tuna or salmon or herrings for lunch. I have yet to get tired of this regimen.

So the secret is, if a guy offers me a chub of headcheese and it isn't my brother, anything could happen  Grin

Brother is on a plateau but I notice he's getting leaner, more toned. He has minimized his exercise for the moment but it doesn't seem to be affecting the good results he's getting. My sister is coming over later today for a weigh and I think she will be dropping too.

I would eat bacon and pork skins every day if I could. I can't bring it into my kosher kitchen though. Everything should taste like bacon and pork rinds.

The hispanic groceries here fry large  pieces of pork rind to a beautiful golden crisp and place it in big glass warmers.... Heart
