February Carnivore Contest
Allowed
* any part of any animal (including processed meat)
* eggs
* VLC dairy
* VLC condiments, seasoning
* water, tea, coffee
Disallowed
* no vegetation (except condiments, seasoning)
* no vegetable oils, mayo, salsa, bbq sauce, etc.
* no half & half
* no coconut oil/milk
* no artificial sweeteners
* no alcohol
Processed meats are fine, like bacon, pepperoni, ham, and the like. The cleaner you can keep it, the better it will be, but, for this contest, it's just about getting away from eating non-animal foods, like vegetation, and to remove as many carbs as possible. That seems to be hard enough for people to do, so this is primarily a mental challenge, and a switch to a different way of thinking about food. All the animal fat is going to be curative as well. There's room for people to do this in a variety of ways, but the main emphasis is on carnivorous eating, not really counting any calories or macro ratios or such. Of course, feel free to do so if you feel you must.
We can all keep track in this thread of how many days we can stick to this WOE. So, if you slip up one day, you are still in the contest. Just get right back on the Bus.
So, who's down for this contest? And, are there any suggestions for any modifications to this?

But, but, but...have you ever TASTED Artisana Coconut Butter? LOL
And since I just gave up 1) coffee 2) cocoa 3) artificial sweeteners, I really don't know if I can mentally ditch the coconut. I use it to get me through hunger pains and afternoon groggies.
Hummmmmm....what else could I use without boosting my protein intake? _________________ http://wifezillasway.blogspot.com/ |

| I'm in but I may start before February, like maybe this week. I have been off the wagon too long. From about December 22 through today, I have only been on for about a week. Fortunately, even though I have been eating so much crap, I only gained 2.7 pounds since 12/22. |

You've described how I already eat. Except I don't eat processed meats or dairy (aside from ghee) and rarely do I eat seasonings. The absolute only thing on that list that I currently have that isn't allowed is the alcohol (I have a drink or two about once a week, maybe on a saturday). _________________ Red |

What alcohol do you drink and how do you drink it? I'm just wondering because I really enjoy rum and diet coke but I really want to avoid sweeteners, I'm just looking for ideas..... _________________

I like vodka with club soda or a single malt Scotch, neat. Once every few months, I have some wine, although I only really tolerate it in the summer. In the winter, it just makes my skin break out in a rash. _________________ Red |

My challenge runs through February, also, and it has a big overlap with this one. It would be possible to do both, if one cut out everything that's allowed on only one but not the other.
Anyone who wants to join is welcome!
Here are the differences:
Dean's allows cured/processed meats.
Mine requires eating as much as one wants of whatever (included foods) one wants, regardless of macro ratios or total calories.
Mine prohibits anything with "natural" or artificial flavors listed on the ingredients label.
Mine allows salad vegetables.
Mine allows some non-animal fat (coconut, olive, and anything not terrifically industrialized).
Mine includes small amounts of tomatoes, onions and celery as seasonings for the purposes of cooking. (As in, a 15-oz can of tomatoes and an onion would be OK to cook a three- or four-pound pot roast with.)

This is sort of an Experiment, in a way. I want to tally up how many total days we on the Bus eat carnivorously. I also want to spend 29 days getting free of carbs and any non-animal foods, which is my goal in changing my WOE to total carnivore eating.
So, Heather and Red, you can certainly add days to this Contest/Experiment... the days when you don't drink any booze, I guess.
Just wanna see how carnivorous this crew is. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

On second thought, it's of paramount importance to keep purposes unmuddied in these experiments and challenges and contests.
My unrestricted calories VLC experiment has one purpose: to see whether accumulated body fat will be shed. This conest/experiment has another: to see how many days Bus riders eat carnivorously.
It's so much more than "I'm using tomatoes and Dean's not; Dean's using bacon and I'm not." Yes, it's possible eat in the Venn Diagram intersection of the two February events, But to what end?
Well, Dean, it's a worthy goal! For the purposes of your tally: The most figure for the greatest number of days in a row I might possibly be eating carnivorously in February would be two: the weekend days when I'm least likely to eat salad. However, those are the days I'm most likely to add tomatoes and onions and celery to pot roast. And I'm using my homemade mayo nearly every day. So zero is the more likely figure.
Good luck! |

| i may do some carnivore days/weeks. i'll have to keep the coconut oil though, since it's part of my candida prescription. i've been eating like you, vesna, on most days. had a mishap last night that made me feel completely crappy: i stopped at the store and bought a controlled carb yogurt, 6 oz cup. i was driving and started to feel totally crappy all of a sudden. i thought it felt an awful lot like sugar buzz. sure enough, when i stopped at a rest area, i read the container, turned out it was a sugar variety. i didn't check to make sure when i grabbed it. just took it from amoung the sugarless. someone must've put it back in the wrong place. i never eat this stuff and have not had commercial yogurt in years. that'll teach me. i was lying in bed and feeling like i was drowning in all the stuff i have going and would never make it out alive. i had to remind myself that i was crashing! this was beyond a horrible experience. |

I struggled with what food to put on this Contest (Challenge). The slippery slope occurs pretty quick, doesn't it? So, I decided that if I included coconut, alcohol, tomatoes... then, pretty soon it would be Atkins bars and Carbquik and all the other artificial junk. I figured, if there is artificial junk, let it at least be in processed meat, like brats, bacon, ham, and the like, since many people seem to eat these things. I have always steered clear of them, until last November, when I was desperate to get off the junk food, and wanted to find a way to get back to carnivore eating. I thought perhaps others might need that stepping stone as well. I personally will move away from cheese and processed meat eventually, but am more concerned right now with just getting into eating meat/eggs/dairy (animal food) exclusively, especially high animal fat.
So, ya'll tell me what you think should be included, besides what is listed. I listed coffee, cuz it seems like 99% of people drink it. I also listed the processed meat and cheese, cuz it seems that many use it to some extent, and for the reasons I just mentioned. I also included spices, sauces, seasonings, cuz I know first hand how hard it is to avoid those. Primarily, though, I was trying to keep it to just animal food. If someone wants to go extreme and do as I did last April, by all means, that's a very cleansing deal, but, for many of us, I think this is a good way to just get back to VLC/ZC Carnivore WOE, now that the holidaze are over.
As far as keeping track. We can just do something like this:

Kim,
Just count the days in February. You don't have to post what you eat, just update the number of days for each day you stick to eating only what is on the list. Not sure at this point if anything more will be added to that list, but we'll just have to wait and see. I too am starting to eat this way as well, and have been for the last three months, with very few slip ups. I am looking forward to ditching the coconut milk, the berries, the wine, and the half & half for the month of February. I think, if I limit cheese and processed meats a bit, I will really lose this fat I've wanted to lose. Taking things closer to zero carb will help as well, I'm sure. Glad to see you in this Contest. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

Vesna,
It doesn't have to be "days in a row". One could eat this way every other day, and rack up 15 days during the month. This will allow for slip ups. Of course, I'm shootin' for 29 days on my tally. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

I have some medical tests on the 11th and need to eat wheat until then (one of the tests will check for wheat/gluten sensitivity and if I don't eat wheat prior to the test it won't be accurate). After that I am back baby! The wheat gives me heartburn (as much as I like it) and the carbs don't do my blood sugar any favors. I do want to get the gluten issue resolved one way or the other and they are doing other tests at the same time, so while they are in the neighborhood.....
I'll be wanting to go carnivore for 2 weeks and then start adding in foods until I see what makes me stall, so how about I join you after my tests and we can overlap experiments?

| first of all; alcohol, tomatoes and coconut oil have never, ever made me want to eat carbquick or atkins bars. i have never been into lc junk food and when i ate an atkins bar it tasted like feet. second, dean, i think the list is good but i'd like to see coconut oil on it. after all it is a saturated fat. feb is good. freezing ass cold....carnivore is a good way to stay warm. so glad you included hot sauce. |

I wouldn't add anything else to the list. As for beverages, I don't drink coffee or tea so I'll just be drinking water and probably very little, if any, of the processed meats. I'm really looking forward to this.

Well, if nobody objects we can add coconut oil/butter. That'd be fine by me. How 'bout everyone else? I'm through with it, but it's probably not really bad or anything. I'm just wanting to go as close to total carnivore as possible. _________________ When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.

I think a carnivore event needs to be a carnivore event. The first set of guidelines that you started the thread with makes perfect sense. Salt and pepper -- that's one thing. But adding vegetable matter with macronutrient content makes it no longer a an animal foods contest. It transforms it into something with no clear center.
I suggest that if people need to make a certain exception, but they want to join the game, the exception could be listed next to their name in the tally. For example, the tally on Feb 8 might read:
Frodo.............5
Bilbo..............8
Gandalf..........8 (plus coconut oil)
Sauron...........1
Galadriel........3
That way we get a picture of who's living on animal food alone, and for what measure of the time. Which is the original conception of the contest.
And nobody has to be left out. Which is in accordance with the spirit of the Bus. |

| i think that's a good idea, vesna. i wouldn't even be doing CO but i feel that i must follow through w the cycle, which i have not done in the past because it made me feel sick. now that i've adjusted, i will just go for it. would certainly like to be rid of it. i had blood testing which confirmed candida about 1 1/2yr ago and have done parts of the prescription but was just flaky about it. i think i am focusing more on the discomfort in my tummy because it is cold and i am more confined than i've been in a number of years... since i spent them in FL. |
