I have been lurking for a few weeks. Back in Oct of 1998 I started Atkins and over the next 11 months lost 120 pounds. I did not eat any of the lowcarb junk, just mostly meat and a few salads or low carb green vegies. In Sept of 1999 I had some stress and reverted back to my old ways of eating and here I am in October 2007 starting over with all the weight I lost back on.

Approximately 4 yrs ago I discovered paleo books and started eating that way for a few months, but then someone on a paleo list serve that I was on introduced me to Normal Walker's juicing book and I unfortunately started studying raw food veganism. That is where I have been for the last 3 1/2 yrs trying to stick to that and finding it impossible to live that way. I probably put on 20 lbs trying to eat that way. So I went back and read the beyond vegsource web-site, reread the paleo books and I am back.

I read all of the bear thread and it really interested me as I am not big on veggies, never have been. I do still eat some cheese and once in a while when I eat salad I eat commercial salad dressing. I consider these transitional and will eventually drop these I think. I could make my own lemon juice/oil dressing but have been to lazy.

My bp was really high and I finally ended going on some medication a couple of weeks ago just to get it down and then I want to wean off it. I am thinking a couple months should be good enough and I will have started to lose some weight to help lower the bp too.

Previously when I ate this way, I always felt really good, had high energy. This time it has been a little harder. My muscles feel somewhat weak and tired when I walk for any length of time just shopping. I am not sure what this is about. I did wonder if I had a vit D deficiency as I don't get much sun this time of year and bought a multi-vitamin that I take every few days. I wondered since my diet was so bad before maybe I am somewhat depleted, but I do not know.

Anyway, sorry so long. I look forward to reading some posts.

Kim

Hi Kim,

Welcome

If you are going to supplement vitamine D, make sure it is D3 (capsules).

Welcome Kim. Since you've had success in the past, you know this way of eating really does work and is healthy. I think that is half the battle. I think that really believing in something is the key to making it work and sticking with it. Come see us often!

Welcome Kim!

Glad you jumped on the Bus! Cool

Have you tried doing cod liver oil during the colder, less sunny months? I used to do that. Now I'm gonna start eating cow liver. Plus, I still try to get out in the sun as much as possible.

Look forward to your posts.

Sunny

No I have never tried the cod liver oil. I guess I have been a little scared to try it as I don't like fish that much (I like shellfish). I also don't care for cow liver or other inside parts of animals except for regular meat. I could eat steak every day. I also like pork, chicken and turkey. Not big on lamb or veal. I have always been kind of a picky eater. I may try the cod liver though. I hear there is some lemon flavored one from Carlsons that isn't bad.

Thanks Jeff. I don't know why I ever gave it up. I have always liked meat. I thought I really believed in the raw food but must not have since I couldn't stick to it.

I do happen to think that eating raw or minimally cooked food is the best. Of course, I'm partial to meat. Wink

Welcome to the forum Kim. Welcome Your post could have been written by me. I regained all my lost weight after I returned to my old eating habits and am currently battling high blood pressure.
I even dabbled in raw foodism for a little while but found that I love meat too much to give it up completely and the only veggies I really like you could count on one hand.

It sucks to go through all that battle to lose weight and then gain it back. I won't do it again though (gain it back). Even more alike. I don't like veggies that much either. I am getting to where I don't really like salads. I will eat some green veggies, like green beans, broccoli if it has lots of butter and cauliflower with butter. I don't like any of the squashes, onions, peppers, mushrooms. My blood pressure is starting to come down on the medication and I think as soon as it is down a little lower, I will wean off and see how it does.

Hi Kim, WELCOME!! Sunny Sunny

Sorry, I'm so slow to say hi, but I keep missing the new posts for some reason! Confused

Anyway, I wanted to say, regarding the above, that, in the first few weeks of low, and especially very low carb, the body can lose a decent whack of Potassium...nothing dangerous, but enough to make some people feel fatigued or a bit weak etc. Using things like Potassium salt instead of regular salt or similar things isn't always enough for those who experience this temporary loss of Potassium.
It does sort itself out, as far as I've heard, once your body adjusts (usually within 3 weeks or so), but it might be worth going to the doc to see about getting some Potassium supplements to take, just for the few week interim whilst you adjust to using ketones for fuel.
Low Potassium levels can definitely cause fatigue, dizziness and a slew of other symptoms.

Just a thought!

But, once again, welcome!! It's wonderful to have you here!! Yup
