in the 23 years i worked in Xray in surgery, I saw both autograft (own bone) and allograft (cadaver) work remarkably well! You can't go wrong.
I know you will choose the right one for you. A lot of famous athletes have had the same surgery as you. You are in good company.
Think nice healing thoughts and laugh at funny movies. Healing thoughts are coming your way from me.

My surgeon said the same thing, he doesn't have a preference for someone my age at my activity level. It is weird, though, choosing myself. I'm about 75 % sure I'm going to use the autograft, but I've got one more night to sleep on it... And one person to talk to who has had the reconstruction done both ways.
Oddly enough, the "sports injury" mentality caused me some stress through this. My physical therapist is completely convinced that I don't need surgery because I don't play sports. I'm glad my surgeon didn't agree with him...
Thanks for the support. I'm looking forward to getting this done and moving past it. _________________ Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to loose - Recorded by Janis Joplin |

Today is decision day. I'm getting different advice from different people, and I can't seem to make up my mind. I was all set to do the autograft, but now I'm chickening out and leaning towards the allograft.
Usually I'm a control freak, so it's weird to me that I don't want to have to make this decision... _________________ Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to loose - Recorded by Janis Joplin |

Never did call the doc yesterday. Figured I could use a couple more days to think about it, and what's the difference if I call Friday at 5pm or Monday at 8am, right?
I've been on track with eating for 4 days now, which is the best I've done over the last couple weeks. It feels great, but it's still a struggle. Day by day... Thank god for peanut butter. A spoonful seems to really curb my carb cravings. I know it's got some carbs, but I'm ok with that. It's still a much better choice than cake! _________________ Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to loose - Recorded by Janis Joplin |

Yeah those cravings are a bitch. Hang in there. Stuffing your face with allowed foods helps even if it's lots. The cravings will eventually subside. _________________ Carnivore (Jun 12/09) 227/196.2/137 Max. wt: 247 (Jul-08)

I have not been cheating either.I had a craving for chocolate cake ever since I saw one at a meeting last week. This afternoon, I ate one Tbspoonful of butter mixed with a quarter Tbspoonful of cocoa powder. Craving gone. Same idea, different flavor. _________________ http://www.fitday.com/fitness/Pub...urnals.html?Owner=surfergirlpuppy

I screwed up my almost-week of eating right. I am frustrated with myself. I know if I can get through this tough first few weeks, I'll be fine. For me, the longer I go, the easier it gets. So I guess I need to kick myself in the ass and just get there!
Starting over tomorrow.
I finally called and left a message for the doc today. I still haven't made up my mind 100% about the graft for my knee surgery, but I keep leaning towards using my own tissue. So I waited for a moment that I was about 75% sure, and called before I could change my mind again.
I suck at crutches, so I'm freaking out a little about not being able to walk. Tomorrow marks the start of crutch training for me. I plan to spend at least 15 minutes a day with a brace on and using my crutches to get around the house in preparation.
Sometimes my own neurosis amazes me. The good thing about this surgery is that it guarantees me at least two days of uninterupted lying on the couch and watching tv while drugged. _________________ Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to loose - Recorded by Janis Joplin |

Practicing on crutches is a great idea...and hooray for drugged t.v. watching!!
Hang in there and don't be too hard on yourself - the important thing is you're not giving up, just keep getting back on and forget about it. You're under a lot of stress...shit happens |

Haven't had a lot of time to hang out here lately... I'm doing so-so with food. Not horrible, but not great. I'm not giving up; eventually I will get there...
I have to plan some time to cook. that would help a lot. I'm stuck in the non-cooking, just heat something up in the microwave mode lately, and that is really condusive to eating junk. I'm going to get back to cooking a bunch of chicken, pork, and beef once a week, then putting it all in the fridge and eating as leftovers for the rest of the week. This is what I did last spring and it worked really well. There will be no more excuses about being to tired to cook!
I'm back on day one after a handful of raisinettes yesterday. Not bad as far as cheats go for me. I mean a cheat is a cheat, but it's much worse when I really go on a carb binge for the rest of the day.
I think I managed to drop about 2 lbs in September, which is less than I wanted, but it's still something.
I've got a ton of stuff to get done before my surgery in two weeks, so I might not be around a lot, but I'll still be doing my best to stay on the bus. _________________ Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to loose - Recorded by Janis Joplin |

Hey..LOSING 2 pounds is way better than gaining anything...
Hang in there and just tell yourself that y0u will not gain anything after your surgery...just recover well and concentrate on your health...y0u are beautiful.. _________________ Flap-a-doodle-kick-a-poodle-kitty-kitty-cow-cow ~ Fat Freddy's Cat |

Recovering from a cheat can be VERY hard - good job on stopping at the raisinettes! I find, for myself, that it's so easy to just have a full blown carb binge once I eat any morsel of non-plan food...it's just too easy to scrap the whole day. So good for you for not letting it get out of hand!
I think y0u's suggestion is a great one. Focus on the period after the surgery as one to heal yourself - a new beginning for a better you.
Grats on the 2lbs - EVERY pound counts woman!! |

Hey, Karen,

I even got extra special drugs when it became apparent that I am somewhat immune to a femoral nerve block. So although I didn't get the benefit of being numb for 24 hours, I got morphine and percoset after I cried like a little girl in recovery.
They didn't give me enough to share. Especially after this conversation with my physical therapist this morning: "Did you take pain meds before coming in this morning?". Yes. "Good, let's get started!"
I've been eating whatever people bring me for now because I'm not mobile enough to cook. All the meds make me so nauseaus that I need to eat something every time I take any of them. So I'm expecting a gain, but I can deal with that in a week or so when I can get around better. I'm lucky my mom has been around a lot to help me out. Therapist says I should be able to ditch the crutches by the two week mark. I'm hoping to do that sooner. _________________ Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to loose - Recorded by Janis Joplin |

I'm trying to catch up on all the journaling, but there's a lot I have to read yet. You guys have been busy!
I'm still hobbling, but at a better pace now. The real problem is my weight. I gained enough to bring back a host of other aches and pains. I'm back up to 220.
Two weeks after surgery, my daughter and I got the flu, so I've had a full month of eating crap and tv dinners because I was too immobile/sick/whiny/pathetic to go to the grocery store or cook. But enough of that. I'm going to try to get down to 200 by the end of December. I think I'll post my weight here once a week.
Happy Tuesday. _________________ Freedom's just another word for nothin' left to loose - Recorded by Janis Joplin |

YAY! Welcome back! Are you ready to throw out all the carby stuff and stop buying it? Are the tv dinners all gone? I'm so glad you are going to drop the recovery weight. I was sick with flu and and backslid,(yOu even had me throw out half a bottle of vino, thanks yOu! I needed that kick in the butt) so I had to say enough is enough too. I'm getting back in ketosis now and feeling better. you will too! I have a feeling a lot of your weight is water anyways due to the tv dinners. _________________ http://www.fitday.com/fitness/Pub...urnals.html?Owner=surfergirlpuppy
